The problem was well-selected to be amenable to visual solving. Now try this one: "Jeremy bought 8 pens and 5 notebooks. The cost of 8 pens is 3 cents less than the cost of 5 notebooks. Each notebook costs 30 cents more than each pen. How much did Jeremy spend altogether?" This one is easily solved algebraically, but I'm not at all sure how it would translate into the visual style.
Thank you for your comment, I can solve your problem visually. It is always a challenge to see if you can explain something in a different or non-traditional way.
I fink that this video was nice. I will be sore to cheke out the others. I am glad I wathed thes video. I seam to have big trublles with math I can get realy fusterateid with it. I hope I Can wath the others some time!
I am a student from Singapore and in school we learn both the US and Singapore method. We learn the Singapore method first so that when we learn the US method, most of us in fact all of us are able to visualise the question and use algebra easily
in Singapore grade 1-6( primary 1-6) learn the model method . but once were in grade 7-10( secondary 1-4/5) we will learn the algebra method. and we cant use the model method anymore D: so basically we will be learning both method. :D
Well made video. For the ones unfamiliar with the what is called the "Singapore Math Method", google it before judging it. It's only one piece of teaching math in Singapore. Google "Pisa OECD Test" for assessments of mathematics and science performance in different parts of the world.
I am a Singaporean for sure. When I was in primary school the teacher taught us both the methods. Then in exams we are allowed to use whichever methods that works more for us.Why this SG method and US method?! I only believe that some students need visualisations to grasp the problem solving skills. Just want to higlight that we are not dependant on the bars. We use both my dear friend. Who told you we only use bar? Seriously maths is versatile. Some gifted students don't even need equation.
The visual method is only taught to develope logical thinking in young students. It has WAY WAY too many limitations the most obvious being it is limited to small whole numbers. Teaching this method has its purpose but other than that it should not be used.

I like the Singapore method better. It is more visual.
