I think they kind of consider the idea of blood as part of the special effects but turn totally turn it down. After all Merlin is a family show. I kind of like it better this way without the gruesome guts and gore.

Haha, I loved this scene! I actually liked that Arthur was annoyed that they were with him. I find it a bit annoying that Merlin always has to save Arthur. It's become a constant thing. He wanted to do this quest by himself!(Even though I do understand why Gwaine and Merlin had to save him :P)

And I liked when he said "Are Gwen and Morgana here, too?" that he said Gwen's name first. These little details make me happy.
