Also, with the updates this is way more responsive than an iPhone 4. And since it's android you can customize everything, and make it look like iOS (ahah, you would like that)... so iPhone looses.
Currently i' am in a phone hunt and can't choose between these two: HTC Desire vs. Samsung Galaxy S. Which one would you choose (assuming that Desire should be about 20-40$ cheaper) ?
Thanks Dave for your reviews , very proffessional and informative.
I have that phone with froyo , and it's just superb, besides the plastic back and lack of the flash. it's definately better than the last phone I used , iphone 3g
I'm pretty much a layman, so please humor me...Is there more than one kind of Galaxy S or does it depend on the country? There seems to be a Galaxy S I9000, a Galaxy S LCD I9003, Galaxy S Vibrant, Galaxy Vibrant, all at totally different prices! So I'm not sure that the mobile I'm looking at is the one I think it is. What are the differences between all of them? Which one is the above video about? I'm from India btw...
I am looking for a review of the galaxy s VIBRANT !!! 99% OF THE VIDEOS WITH THE TITLE ''GALAXY S VIBRANT REVIEW'' DON'T REVIEW THE VIBRANT VERSION, BUT THE GSM WORLDWIDE VERSION !! CAN YOU PLEASE PAY ATTENTION AT WHAT YOU ARE REVIEWING AND DON'T WASTE MY TIME ???
Cool prononciation: it has been for me an english lesson before being a review. Anyway, I'm waiting for this superb phone, it's coming tomorrow. To conclude, I want just say that lagfix application can fix dramatically well the responsivness of the device. Try it out, you can find it in the official android store.
Good review but the USA version appears to be different. Got one today and it doesn't have the delay yours has. Mine has firmware version 2.1-update1. Being an iPhone 3GS user I was biased toward Apple. Apple has a more polished and intuitive interface. However, after using the Galaxy S for half a day I like it. I already hacked it to give me wifi tethering so I have unlimited data for my laptop and iPad. : ) AT&T is horrible and that is why I went to Tmobile and the Galaxy S vs iPhone 4.
@Bishy2k9 802.11n is the latest wireless connection standard (there is also a,b & g). Amongst other things it just gives a faster data throughput, improved from 54 Mbit/s to 600 Mbit/s.
The Bluetooth v3.0, is that faster than v2.0 or does it mean it likes more phones? As in my BB 9500 doesn't like certain phones so it won't connect/send to them.
I didn't know you could voice search, that's awesome!
@tredecker Don't wanna sound like a fanboy here but lag issues have already been addressed to a certain extent by Samsung. Also Froyo 2.2 is about to be released on 23 september & thirdly, if you are bit of a tweaker, there are several lagfixes/memory improvements out there that make the galaxy s lightning fast & super responsive. There is even a one-click-lagfix to make things really easy for non-tweakers. The android community rocks!
If price wasn't an issue, including limited capabilities and more so, that Apple branding that is given to you, ie. YOU HAVE to use itunes. What if i don't want to?
The you might as well save yourself the video time and get yourself an iphone4.
Period :P
Iv'e gone for an android for a good reason methinks.
Hey~! I really Really Enjoyed ur video... I swear to god why dont u make a video about comparing iphone and Galaxy~! Would be Nice... i'll be first to watch then~!
Hey Dave, Awesome video. I bought this mobile phone after watching this review. The one thing I don't understand is the microphone icon in the quick search bar. How did you enable it? Please keep the good videos!!
@Bigp3te Well, the Desire does not have a camera flash either. If I was choosing between the two I would go for the Desire. However, if video was important to me I would look at the Desire or the Motorolam XT720.
all the resposivness issues and lag is indeed galaxy s strict problem. There has been confirmed that current firmware causes extremely bad write and read times on the internal memory a fix has been done involving putting an SD card(could be a slow one) and partitioning it in 2 one for the system and one for you're files (music, photos, etc).Actually a girl that reviewed a phone was contacted by samsung to test a firmware in there HQ in belgium that fixes that. The Froyo update will have that fix
im looking to get a contract phone and im stuck between htc legend and this there the same mintues and texts and internet but this is £10 more do you think this is worth it or would i be better off with the legend?
@littleguyross I sent you a message. However, to answer here also. The extra money gets you a faster processor, more memory and larger screen. If that is worth the extra £10 to you, then go for it. Also consider the HTC Desire.
@davomrmac No, I have to wait until the end of the month, can't wait to get back to the iPhone after having the HTC Desire great phone just not for me after all.
Hi and ooo, another thing, my iPhone4 battery does not last a whole day... and I am not constantly using it. I unplug it at about 7:30, and by the time I arrive home 12 hours later it is either dead or nearly dead.. I listen to music on the train, thats about 2 hours a day. The rest of the time its maybe 10 calls in the day and maybe some fiddling with the interface.
I own an iPhone4 and have been trying to get Orange to take my iPhone4 back. I have had many dropped calls due to holding the phone in my left hand. I have struggled to adjust to the closed-proprietory ways of the iphone, lack of support for media file formats, no drag and drop to and from the phone, and lack of many features in apps like mail. Multitask in iPhone ONLY exists IF the app is written for it. Android multitasking is system wide...
@davomrmac Tx. The problem is I bought it in the Orange Store, not online. They say they do not take iPhone refunds because Apple have not admitted there is a fault, just a software glitch, but we all know the software will fix the display error, not the signal strength. I have been at them for two weeks now, and MAY get some joy today, we will see. Next step, Galaxy S and beyond... ;)
@fredphoesh Apple does not need to admit the problem. You purchased from Orange, your contract is with them, not Apple. They have to fulfil their part of the contract by supplying you a handset that is fit for the use it was sold for.
hi there mate... well, I am now somewhat of an expert in the matter as I have been to the store about 6 times, called orange about 10 and spoken to /emailed Apple about 6 times. Orange store and online are completely different. Online you have 7 days, even if you just dont like it. In store you can ONLY return a FAULTY item. They do not regard the iPhone as faulty. After weeks I now have a fault code (from online team) and will hopefully get a refund tomorrow... holding thumbs.
@fredphoesh Well done. Just to clarify though, within the first 6 months of purchase in a store, it is up to the retailer to prove it is NOT faulty. It is not up to you to prove it is faulty. As such, in store purchases that do not perform the task for which they are sold can be returned. Also, it is worth quoting that Apple has part admitted the fault by offering ALL customers 30 days to return their iPhones for a full refund. Lucky you bought it online. Good luck, let me know the outcome.
@davomrmac Orange UK shops do not take iphones back. Full stop. I am 100% certain of that. If the device is faulty, I can take it to Apple to get it replaced. But i believe all iPhone 4s will suffer from the same issue. Apple do not say the iPhone4 is faulty, they avoided full responsibility by saying it is a software issue that will be fixed by an update. Of course they did this to avoid a massive drop in sales and increase in returns.
how do you think the battery charge compares between this and the desire? I hear the desire is very bad and does not last an entire day. How i wish HTC had made this phone. Just for the better build quality and supreme feel of their devices... It would make my decision process so much simpler!
Hi Dave, I have seen all 5 vids of this phone but I can't remember if the text reflows on the page(such that you don't have to horiz. scroll) on pinch and zoom like the desire does. Also, how is the call quality? is it audible enough when you're in a noisy place? how is the mic? Also, is there a way to silence the phone without rejecting the call when ur phone rings? with the desire, if you turn the device over when a call comes in, it silences the phone. i'm still torn betw the desire and this.
@srikar121 Pinch to zoom does not reflow the text on this one. Call quality is good, even in noisy places. Not sure on the silencing questions... anyone else?
@davomrmac Can you try calling yourself on the Galaxy S and look for any silencing buttons on screen? or maybe the volume up/down buttons when the phone is ringing will silence it. The volume button method works on my moto razr.
@georgebambrick8888 That is a hard one to answer. HTC Desire feels better quality material, Galaxy S is a lot sexier and nicer brighter screen. Hmmmm.
Does it have a lock function similar to the HTC Desire or is the a default android app? Thx for the review Dave, I said i was gonna wait but i think I'm actually gonna get this phone. That said i am still no closer to choosing my next phone? My network has offered me either a Desire or a galaxy s.

My main thing is that it has to have huge capacity, cause i like being able to carry my 70+ (and growing) music collection around with me everywhere I go, thanks!

@Zepplinne ZuneHD is not readily available in the UK. I keep trying to get hold of one.
