Many bass players idolize Jaco, but deep down they really want to pay like Victor Wooten. Same as guitarists who have Steve Vai on their wall, but they really want to play like Hendrix :)
I used not be really big on Victor Wooten, but as I progressed in my playing, this man is a giant inspiration for me. The things he says blow my mind.
Pretty sure they dont mean "Victor has picked up EXACTLY where Jaco left off". Its probably more along the lines of " Like Jaco, Victor is one of the greatest and most accomplished bassists of his time, and his introduction of new techniques and playing ideas is invalueable to the bass world".
They're both more than just "bass players", they're musicians. And they both formed their own revolutionary styles unique to themselves, which thousands of people try to emulate or cite as influences.
Victor is great but greatest bass player of our times?Too general of a statement. That makes it sound like every other great bass player's hard work is shit.I know many unknown players that have supported and played with some of the finest musicians on the planet never making the music seem like a competition but an experience.
Victor Wooten? A continuation of Jaco Pastorius? I love Vic, but these two players are completely different. They shouldn't be compared, in my opinion. Victor is Victor, Jaco is Jaco. Both awesome, both different.
@taufoofar I think you interpreted it wrong, what he means about Victor being the continuation of Jaco Pastorius is the level of influence. Jaco has brought a level of influence in the bass that the world has ever imagined and Victor Wooten is doing the same.
@buefyYT Well, they might mean that, but there's a big difference between saying that he's the next most influential bass player after Jaco and saying that he's the continuation of Jaco.
Of course, but I think people just see it as a thing like Jaco was one of the best if not the best at his style, and victor is one of the best if not the best at his style.
But he took something out of him, which means that joco influenced on vic, while playing together too, but he carried out a completly personal and different style, apreciated by every trully bass player
U probably know both bass players perfectly, but as he sais at the beggining he drank from the most perfect technics of the bass line compositions, so you see james brown to learn and improve the start, he carries on with slap and sais jaco taugh him something completly different and out of the bass
@paulossilveira Mkay... I thought so, but couldn't find a studio version of it... Do you know if there is one (because in here it sounds quite good, without any noises from the audience)?
@icedbannanas how can u think hes a dick? I think he sounds like a really down to earth guy who knows his stuff and isnt affraid to express his opinions if you know what i mean? :)
@dwinkle6 I just don't like the feeling of warping reality to such an extent that a musician (specifically as I am particularly into music) is turned into an untouchable persona.Gigging around I find many musicians buying into the image of being a superhero onstage, becoming self absorbed and frankly annoying.I'm sure Vic isn't like that at all, and just found it a bit pity that I felt that was the image that was coming across (for me).I could of course be getting the completely wrong impression.
@icedbannanas You're a successful publicists so you know far better than I do,but I am glad that you are also aware of the different needs of consumers (pretty obvious comments I know).Meeting you or in Vic in Kensignton would be awesome, even though I am but a measly law student in London, so I don't see how I could realistically suggest anything artistically!Nonetheless, even though I know meeting you or Vic will never happen, it's funny how small the world is and the convos you can have online!
@PRSguy94 Personally, I'm a huge Les fan, and even Victor pays respect to Les in his song (Bass Tribute- Reprise). He's very innovative on the instrument and does stuff that many other bassists have come to imitate. Flea for me is more of a run-of-the mill bass player compared to the greats like Vic and Stanley. I think the dislikes go beyond being a fan of another bassist instead of Victor.
@cjtrapper I'm a big fan of Vic, not really of Les or Flea though... It just kinda seemed to fit the situation. I and do agree, the dislikes do go beyond being a fan of one or the other. I just know so many people that when I mention the name Victor Wooten they always ask "Is he like Les Claypool?" or "Who's that? Is he better than Les Claypool?".
@jayziembka its called overjoyed off of a show of hands album. I hope this helped. I honestly would like to know the name of the groove in the beginning.. the song in the beginning.
I only discovered Victor Wooten in the last 2 years thanks to YouTube. He's definitely one of the finest bass players I've ever seen. He can play it all. He needs more exposure.

some people compare him to metal bass player!people you must realize that metal is diferent than jazz!!! wooten cant play metal and trujilo cant play jazz!!
@Guitareben Man, it depends of which metal you're talking about... If you say that metal is easy, then you don't know shit about metal... Try searching math metal, avant-garde or progressive, then you will find that metal is more than easy noise.

@mikaboom123 well..actually dude. jazz and metal are very much alike. they're both played in minor keys and use a lot of the same music theory such as modes, arpeggios, ect. Victor could play metal REALLY easily if he wanted to. metal just has more distortion and either have a higher tempo or use shorter notes like 64th notes. i've actually taken a jazz riff and worked it to metal, and vice versa. it's not hard.
A true living legend and the "Grandmaster" of our instrument and spoken like a true champion crediting his inspirations and his brother for showing him the instrument. Nice back flip off the wall to.

Victor often plays multiple voicings on the same instrument, playing a bass line on top of a bass line whether it be through tapping or any number of other techniques. Victor Wooten is very probably the best technically skilled bass player alive. Flea's lines are fast and funky, but thats all they are, mostly octaves as well. Get a clue.
