Getting to play regularily at a full blown show, which is the best kind of practice anyways for any musician...If they were any type of good parents, they would keep the kid in line if anything went out of hand. I'm sure not every drum solo is going to be the same.. I mean, yes, there are solos out there in which the drummer just goes off and plays full out in no particular meter, and I'm sure there are solos that stick to basic time meters. I suppose there's no set "rules" to a solo

what ever you want.. theres different approaches, theres solos in straight beat/groove form and free form, +combinations. free form tends appeal more to musicians who get it as they can be heavily based in improv and on the spot. both rage from simple 2 complex, abstract etc. good solos in both should have a compositional approach, sometimes even melodic where that has more emphasis than the rhythm, but like food your not used to, its not always appealing or even makes sense.
