hi muddy im getting some fast winds and i am charging at 7.5 dc volts im getting 00.1amp. at 11.5 dc volts im getting 00.5 amps and at 13.5 and up dc volts im going down to 00.3 amps . does this sound right i did reach 16 dc volts a few times, just wondering if this is normal.thanks
That's my luck man, here lately been having some real good winds on my wind generators.I wanna build some solar cells ,Ive got the wind generators but u can't depend on them all the time ,if the sun not shinning then the wind is blowing so I need some solar cells to build that will be my next hobby to do or at least on the want list.
Thanks for the return reply and keep up the great work man.
@losttreasurehunt I FOUND A LINK FOR SOLAR PANELS CLOSEOUTS FOR 78 CENTS PER WATT. THAT'S CHEAPER THAN SOLAR CELLS. I WILL LOOK FOR THE LINK AND FORWARD IT TO YOU. ONE OF MY FRIENDS BOUGHT 4000 DOLLARS WORTH OF THEM. WOWWEEE! WITH SUN AND SOLAR, THE GAPS ARE VERY SMALL IN BETWEEN.
i'm 3/4 of the way done with the fan portion. going to mount a pulley on the side of the fan housing and try to use this in a waterwheel application.i already have the wheel turning and can get consistent 120 rpm's in the pulley ratio. when i get this going it sounds like i may need a more advanced regulator. i truly appreciate you taking the time to help with our education!
@victormcox GLAD TO HERE THE WORK GOING WELL. I DONT THINK YOU WILL NEED A REGULATOR. THE BATTERY WILL ACT AS A REGULATOR.
AS LONG AS YOU HAVE PLACED THE MAGNETS INSIDE AND CONNECTED THE RECTIFIERS JUST LIKE IN THE VIDEOS, YOU ARE SET. JUST DONT CONNECT THE BATTERY UP BACKWARDS OR THE RECTIFIERS HAVE A CHANCE OF BLOWING. THE RECTIFIERS SHOULD HAVE THE PLUS AND NEGATIVE TERMINALS MARKED. KEEP US UPDATED ON THIS WATER WHEEL APPLICATION. SOUNDS GREAT.
Mind you, I've never messed around with anything like this before...but with a load it slows down as you said. So, if it's charging batteries does that affect the rate of rotation as well?
@101011b PRETTY COOL THINKING, AND RIGHT ON ALMOST. THE RPMs ARE DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO THE VOLTAGE OUTPUT. THE HIGHER THE VOLTAGE ABOVE THE BATTERY BANK, THE MORE CURRENT IS DRAINED , AND THE MORE THE UNIT SLOWS DOWN. IF IT STALLS OUT, GO TO A HIGHER VOLTAGE BATTERY BANK. IT WILL SPIN FASTER. VOLTS X AMPS = POWER, MEANS THAT IT WILL STILL BE PRODUCING THE SAME POWER FROM THE WIND, AND WILL PROBABLY SPIN UP TO GIVE EVEN MORE POWER WITHOUT STALLING. COOL HUH?
I did something like that only on a smaller scale. I took a stepper motor from a dumpster printer, fan blades from a medium sized fan, some wire and two leds and cool. It runs for free off my fan. I have a video of it if you want to check it out.
@zackthegoth SOUNDS COOL, JUST POST IT AS A VIDEO RESPONCE. I WILL APPROVE IT. I DID THE SAME THING, BUT I HAD TO EPOXY THE BLADES ON. IT LIT UP LEDS NICELY. THEN MY FRIEND AND I TOOK A SPIN IN HIS SKITTLES TRUCK WHILE I HELD IT OUT THE WINDOW. I TOLD HIM NOT TO GO FAST. BUT HE IS A SMART ALLECK AND I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN HE WANTED THRILL MORE THAN SAFETY. I COULDNT PULL IT IN THE WINDOW WHILE SPINNING. 35 MPH TOOK IT OUT WITH A BANG AS THE BLADES EXPLODED AND HIT HIS FANCY PAINT JOB. LOL.
@jefferson123828 THE BEST WAY TO CHOOSE WHICH FAN TO USE IS... LOOK FOR THE 5 BLADED FANS, AND THE HEAVIEST ONE WILL BE THE ONE THAT WORKS BEST. OR LOOK AT THE ELECTRICAL SPECIFICATIONS ON A STICKER ON THE MOTOR. THE HIGHER THE AMPS, THE HIGHER THE OUTPUT EXPECTED WILL BE.
@LUCKY4908 THIS DEMONSTRATION SHOW THE UNIT PRODUCING ABOUT 120 VOLTS DC. THE RECTIFIER IS WIRED UP THE SAME AS ALWAYS. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS WHEN YOU CONNECT THE UNIT TO THE BATTERIES, THE BATTERIES ACT AS A VOLTAGE REGULATOR. THE UNIT STILL NEEDS TO RECTIFIED INTO DC FIRST. AS THE UNIT TRIES TO RAISE THE VOLTAGE, THE BATTERIES SUCK MORE CURRENT FROM THE COILS. THIS SLOWS THE MAGNETS DOWN AND REGULATES THE VOLTAGE.
@steveofgod GOOD QUESTION... THE ANSWER IS THAT THE MAGNETIC FLUX WILL TRAVEL THROUGH THE SHELL TO THE MAGNET NEXT TO IT WITH VERY LITTLE PASSING TO THE INSIDE. BECAUSE OF THIS PROPERTY OF THE FERRUS METAL, WE PUT THE STEEL BANDING INSIDE THE SHELL TO HELP GUIDE THE FLUX TO MAKE THE MAGNETS STRONGER. AND THE MAGNETS INSIDE THE STEEL.
@SuperGreenfreedom N-42 GRADE OR BETTER MAKES A DECENT ALTERNATOR. THE POWER TO GENERATE ELECTRICITY IS IN THE MAGNETS. A BAD DESIGN WORKS WHEN YOU THROW ENOUGH MAGNETS AT IT. SO WHEN IT COMES TO MAGNETS, THE STRONGER THE BETTER.
Hey Scott, just wanted to thank you for taking the time to put these vids up...Its been 2 days since ive started watching em' and ive almost got my first one complete(minus the props and battery setup). I was wondering what kind of battery setup you would use to power larger appliances like refrigerators/microwaves/etc. I plan on using 2-3 turbines in addition to some solar panels that im building when $ allows... I want BG+E to take their meter's back by the end of summer!
@Kumite0071 MICROWAVES ARE SOMEWHERE IN THE RANGE OF 1500 WATTS, DRYERS ARE A LOT MORE, AND HOT WATER HEATERS AND SUCH. IF YOU PLAN ON OPPERATING THESE APPLIANCES, YOU WILL NEED ENOUGH BATTERY AND INVERTER TO PULL THE JOB OFF. DEEP CYCLE 6 VOLT GOLF CART BATTERIES ARE ABOUT THE BEST FOR THE PRICE. USED OR NOT.
HIGHER INPUT VOLTAGE INVERTERS ARE BEST FOR HIGH USAGE DEVICES.
@yellowmetalcyborg I WAS GLAD TO HAVE A LITTLE WIND ENOUGH TO SPIN THE BLADES FOR THE VIDEO. LOL
AFTER THIS VIDEO IT RAINED FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES AND THE WIND PICKED BACK UP. SO I TRIED TO GET SET UP AGAIN, AND THE WIND STOPPED. COMPLETELY!!! WHAAAH!
@muddymuddymuddmann I know how it feels. When I try to play badminton outside the wind picks up and when I try to fly the kite the wind stops, so what I do is I take both things out so the wind cannot decide : P.
@yellowmetalcyborg YA FUNNY YOU SHOULD MENTION WIND AND BAD MITTEN IN THE SAME SENTANCE. I WAS POURING GAS IN MY TANK FROM A GAS JUG. MY MITTENS GOT WET. I CLOSED THE TANK AND GRABBED MY CIGARETTE OFF THE FRONT OF THE CAR. THE WIND BLEW A SPARK ON MY OTHER HAND THAT HAD THE MITTEN STILL ON. WHOOOSHFLUUM, I WAS SHAKING THAT MITTEN SO HARD THAT I LOOKED LIKE A HIGH SPEED FIRE DANCER ON STERIODS. IT CAME OFF PRETTY FAST. GOOD THING THE TANK WAS CLOSED.
@yellowmetalcyborg YA I KINOW I WAS JUST PULLING YOUR LEG TO MAKE YOU LAUGH. I WANT TO GET STARTED ON MY ELECTRIC TRUCK SO I CAN TELL BP AND OTHER OIL COMPANIES GOOD BYE.
@muddymuddymuddmann I've thought about that before and I abandoned the idea because of costs. After looking at the costs of the battery, the carger, the engine, riding the bicycle seems more appealing. : ) One thing that I would like to try is to make a chainsaw bicycle because it's more cost effective and more efficient than an electric bicycle, up to 200mpg, four times better than a prius and cheaper.
@yellowmetalcyborg A LOT CHEAPER! I WOULDNT CARE ABOUT HAVING A CHARGER. THE CEILING FAN TURBINE WILL HOOK TO ALMOST ANY BATTERY BANK AND DO A HALF WAY DECENT JOB OF KEEPING THEM UP.
sorry bout pushing the wrong button. these are some of the best uses for these fans I have seen. All the remodel shows pull them down and toss them and the dumps are full. a good three blade pvc blade set and that thing would be motoring with mabel in no time.
@itsandbits1 THANKS! I WANT TO REWIRE ONE FROM SCRATCH SO THEY WILL PUT OUT MORE. BUT THE AXIAL FLUX TURBINE IS COMING UP SO PEOPLE CAN SEE A REAL GOOD OUTPUT. THE AXIAL FLUX IS THE BEST USE OF MAGNETS IVE SEEN SO FAR. THEY ARE HARDER TO BUILD, BUT WELL WORTH IT. I CANT WAIT TO START ON ONE WITH VIDs.
After watching all 8 segments came down to not even a storm blowing in could your ceiling fan wind turbine light a 60 watt bulb. Wow...... your a smart guy scott. But the ceiling fan wind turbine is a bust .
@jeffbrown72 I like this comment. Thanks for sharing it with us. I am sorry you feel this way about the cheap and easy toys I play with, But I never have a dead battery in the shop. I've never had one crash or blow. Just the tail blowing off in high winds. I know how to keep it on there for good , but if the winds start early and I cant get home in time to disable it. I dont have to worry because it furls nicely enough to protect itself. and the turbulent winds will just take the tail off.
@jeffbrown72 So why fix that? and if i want more out of it i can always rewire it.
and for 40 bucks of parts what do you want.? You cant expect it to power a whole house. But I will be showing a different kind of turbine that will in a month or so. Hope you dont miss that. I believe you will enjoy that one. Many good things to you and yours.
Dontcha just know it. There,s a burn ban every time the wind gets up. and if they say calm winds, and you burn a barrel, It seems to show up. Keep the water hose handy.
Glad I could help. When I put the first video up, i thought it was a small thing, but with the growth of what ive seen on the project, I laugh with great joy like a daddy watching his family grow. Its really cool. Thanks my friend.
Hi Muddy, I love your videos! I'm thinking of building a water wheel in a small stream near my camp, do you think your ceiling fan generator would work with that? Also, patiently waiting a follow-up on your tin can engine tutorial. Thanks, Zeek
ya I just put up 3 parts of the stirling engine last night. Thats if you didnt see them already. I will have a few more on that in a few days. Im deciding on the type of piston to instruct. I believe I will do the hardest and the easiest and let you decide. the hardest works best and lasts a long time.
a water wheel will do a good job on these if geared up a bit.
Hi Muddy. Thanks for posting these videos. They are great. I have a question, though. When the wind changes directions the whole unit could spin in circles over time and cause the wire to wrap around itself and break or tie-up the system. Do you use brushes in actual application to keep this from happening? Thanks...Brad
Hey Mud , Great video thanks ! I didn't understand some of the tech stuff , maybe you could do one w/more laymen terms & explanations for dumb asses like me !---- 5 stars
The wind sounded like it was blowing but it didnt push hard enough to sustain rpms with the load drawing it down. another foot diameter would have helped. this was the first four bladed prop I made and I expected more out of it in lower winds.
4 inch or larger PVC pipe makes beautiful blades, light strong, easily worked and very cheap. Many larger plumbing firms will let you scrounge through their off cuts, just to get rid of it.
thanks but the insided curve has drag that slows it down a bit more. they work well enough to make it worth the while to make them though.
I am hooked on the carving process so I stopped making the pvc blades a few years back. WEST COAST DOUG has a good set of templates for the pvc blades.
Doug2877 is posted farther down the comments page. Check him out.
Have you tried this same motor hooking it up on a vawt, with stators around it to direct the wind, and strong magnets(same polarity, repelling each other) separating the upper part from the base of the turbine so there is virtually no friction?
I want to play around with VAWTs a little, but HAWTs put out more for the size. and Ive got a few more hawts to build first. like a serious 15 foot axial flux that can do a lot more. but for now i need more bucks
HEY Steve. glad to see someone get something from my efforts to spread the technology a little further. Please feel free to post a video response if you make a video of the new project. Thanks so much for the comment. see you soon.
no problem, Ill try to get a vid up here soon, we didnt use ceiling fans mind you, but still the coil pack idea works real well, try using an old treadmill motor as your next generator motor, they work REALLY well, its nice to see people like you trying to help others for free, most peopl emake you pay liek 20$ for diagrams that arent even that good.
Ceiling fan or not its all good to see and do. and I will always do the educational thing for free. I still carve a few props for my friends. Thats if i have time. But the plans and info I try to keep up with the people who depend on me. and best of all , I enjoy it. Good questions keep me on my toes. and finding a way to explain it with out confusing people is fun to. I believe that there are a lot of people who dont have a bunch of bucks to shell out for a dream. free is better.
Thanks very much for your very good video "walk throughs"... im going to build something similar soon. Um, can i ask: what is the best type of ceiling fan. As theres several on eb@y and id like to pick the right one. Thanks and regards
Awsome! It has to be a good feeling when something you have built with your own hands works! Good to see it powering the light, most videos just show the turbine and never anything it is powering up. Great job!
It's nice to see a wind turbine demo where it actually generates power. You see so many videos of things just spinning in the wind.
Your turbine may have been capable of making more than 60 watts in that wind, it's just not matched well to a low impedance bulb. That's a problem I'm working on. :-)
tHANKS I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN ON THE DEMONSTRATION OF POWER. IM USED TO DOING ONE SET OF MAGNETS. AND A SINGLE PROP. BUT THE DOUBLE PROP STILL HAS THE SAME WIND SWEPT AREA, I THINK THE ALTERNATOR IS MORE POWERFUL THAN THE BLADES. MISMATCH No.1.
IM GOING TO TRY TRANSFORMERS BEFORE RECTIFICATION AS AN EXPERIMENT.
That lightning strike was beautiful as were the clouds I did not know you were a weather man too .I made a mini three phase alt. today with six coils and I used one of my muddy ceiling fans as a rotor I had to steal mags from my good muddy turbine but I had no wind anyway it was just a test so I know what to do when my big magnets get here I got 65milla volt out of her at 2million rpms I think it will work great in 400 mph winds GREAT VIDEO THANKS FOR UPDATING US
Thanks , I love it here too . The wind blows most of the time, except for last week, and its wide open with no crime or stupidity around me. the mexicans play the music loud every now and then but i like it. It reminds me of polkas lol.
well the blades usually break first from teeddy bear and pillow fights and and grown ups stretching at the wrong time while standing up. You are better of looking at the trash as you go down the road till you see one that someone else has had a pillow fight with or a teddy bear tantrum. dont get any ideas now. or balloons or beach balls or kites or sisters heads, or cats , or plants or sledghammers . like i said dont try this at home. Offer the trash man $5, He'll find one the same week.
Ya I believe he would and he will probably come with more to see if you will buy them. or he could be a really coolguy like me and he would give it to ya and laugh a little he might even find some pvc .
OH YA PART 2, make sure you hold the $5 and stay true to your word. you might need some more motors or other things later down the road. or he might want one when you are through. trust is very valuable but it must be built , not immagined in hope. things like extension cords, top fence rail, copper wire. ect. are everyday things to him.
a car altrnator is a good gift for a young man like yourself. just a few magnets and an inverse prop, and some rectifier diodes and your on the top envey list of all of us. you keep up that brilliant learning center and show your results. all of us will smile all the more. what are you going to do with all that power?
ya real rare earth magnets , maybe a small portable grid tie, or some lawn tractor batteries for temporary use. wow excessive power . whatto do.
You will have it all figured out by the time its up in the air. You never know what you will aquire between now and then. good luck and let me know if i can help.
You cant learn anything whith it stored in the garage. You cant become a green power guru if you wait till you have no more time to play again 'til you are an old fart. Time's a waistin.
hey Mudd that there was no connection withthe inside wires so i guess its useless anyway i did not get a chace to get the celing motor dont worrie i will
there is a terminal on the back that looks like a stud with a nut on it. set your meter on ohms and place your leads to the stud and the other one to the case. and chech the reading then.
Cool guitar AND invention Scott - I always like checking out these vids!
There has got to be a market for this one maybe residential use as a field or yard light - what great conversation piece!
With an onboard voltage regulator the risks of damage to the load because of that overspeed (i.e.: also "over voltage") issue would be resolved, adding a light sensor & perhaps a charge circuit to perhaps a 5-10aH battery and I could see it being sold at at Menards or Home Depot for sure.
It puts out more thn that. lol hooking it to some batteries will lower the voltage and turn the voltage pressure into amperage. at least 30 amp hour. it would make a great deep cycle battery charger for the dock or deer blind. thanks i might concider it.

Hi Muddy. Thanks for posting these videos. They are great. I have a question, though. When the wind changes directions the whole unit could spin in circles over time and cause the wire to wrap around itself and break or tie-up the system. Do you use brushes in actual application to keep this from happening? Thanks...Brad
thechessstick 2 years ago
some places use a short piece of aircraft cable to make it turn less revolutions than the wire. they figure it will eventually unwind.
slip rings are really the best way. but I just unwind it every 2 weeks or so.

Hey Mud , Great video thanks ! I didn't understand some of the tech stuff , maybe you could do one w/more laymen terms & explanations for dumb asses like me !---- 5 stars

What the HELL do you keep playing with the light switch for?
RCEbooks 2 years ago
The wind sounded like it was blowing but it didnt push hard enough to sustain rpms with the load drawing it down. another foot diameter would have helped. this was the first four bladed prop I made and I expected more out of it in lower winds.

4 inch or larger PVC pipe makes beautiful blades, light strong, easily worked and very cheap. Many larger plumbing firms will let you scrounge through their off cuts, just to get rid of it.
Great work!
ozzirt 2 years ago
thanks but the insided curve has drag that slows it down a bit more. they work well enough to make it worth the while to make them though.
I am hooked on the carving process so I stopped making the pvc blades a few years back. WEST COAST DOUG has a good set of templates for the pvc blades.
Doug2877 is posted farther down the comments page. Check him out.

Great work man!
Have you tried this same motor hooking it up on a vawt, with stators around it to direct the wind, and strong magnets(same polarity, repelling each other) separating the upper part from the base of the turbine so there is virtually no friction?
shreddlord 2 years ago
I want to play around with VAWTs a little, but HAWTs put out more for the size. and Ive got a few more hawts to build first. like a serious 15 foot axial flux that can do a lot more. but for now i need more bucks

we made a BIIG windmill using the principals from this Vid, with coil packs a nd huge magnets, cut the energy bill by 80%

HEY Steve. glad to see someone get something from my efforts to spread the technology a little further.

DiyEcoProjects 2 years ago
For now the best I can tell you is the older the better and the five bladed ceiling fans. also the higher the power rating.

Awsome! It has to be a good feeling when something you have built with your own hands works! Good to see it powering the light, most videos just show the turbine and never anything it is powering up. Great job!
NCHiker1970 2 years ago 7
Yes its a great feeling when you blow a 60 watt bulb too!!

It's nice to see a wind turbine demo where it actually generates power. You see so many videos of things just spinning in the wind.
Your turbine may have been capable of making more than 60 watts in that wind, it's just not matched well to a low impedance bulb. That's a problem I'm working on. :-)
sjh7132 2 years ago 4
tHANKS I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN ON THE DEMONSTRATION OF POWER.

It reminds me of polkas lol.

were i live we never get 20 mph but around 15 most of the time we have a ceiling fan and im waiting for it to break! (:
DeanC993 2 years ago 5
well the blades usually break first from teeddy bear and pillow fights and and grown ups stretching at the wrong time while standing up.

DeanC993 2 years ago 4
Ya I believe he would and he will probably come with more to see if you will buy them. or he could be a really coolguy like me and he would give it to ya and laugh a little he might even find some pvc .

muddymuddymuddmann 2 years ago
OH YA PART 2, make sure you hold the $5 and stay true to your word. you might need some more motors or other things later down the road. or he might want one when you are through. trust is very valuable but it must be built , not immagined in hope. things like extension cords, top fence rail, copper wire. ect. are everyday things to him.

well i got a free altenator car today
DeanC993 2 years ago 4
a car altrnator is a good gift for a young man like yourself. just a few magnets and an inverse prop, and some rectifier diodes and your on the top envey list of all of us. you keep up that brilliant learning center and show your results. all of us will smile all the more. what are you going to do with all that power?
mudd
muddymuddymuddmann 2 years ago
rare earth magnets? im not sure what ill do with all the power thanks
DeanC993 2 years ago 3
ya real rare earth magnets , maybe a small portable grid tie, or some lawn tractor batteries for temporary use. wow excessive power . whatto do.
You will have it all figured out by the time its up in the air. You never know what you will aquire between now and then. good luck and let me know if i can help.

You cant learn anything whith it stored in the garage. You cant become a green power guru if you wait till you have no more time to play again 'til you are an old fart. Time's a waistin.

there is a terminal on the back that looks like a stud with a nut on it. set your meter on ohms and place your leads to the stud and the other one to the case. and chech the reading then.

Cool guitar AND invention Scott - I always like checking out these vids!
There has got to be a market for this one maybe residential use as a field or yard light - what great conversation piece!
With an onboard voltage regulator the risks of damage to the load because of that overspeed (i.e.: also "over voltage") issue would be resolved, adding a light sensor & perhaps a charge circuit to perhaps a 5-10aH battery and I could see it being sold at at Menards or Home Depot for sure.
lastdaysguitar 2 years ago 5
It puts out more thn that. lol hooking it to some batteries will lower the voltage and turn the voltage pressure into amperage. at least 30 amp hour. it would make a great deep cycle battery charger for the dock or deer blind. thanks i might concider it.
