Eddie was road testin ghr new Charvel (Fender) guitars and this was his way of showing he was done with Ernie Ball. I was at the Clecveland show and he did the same thing. Smashed a green EB. He was playing several red/wht/blk striped strats that night but none had the logo on the headstock.
More likely as a result of being "forced" to be on stage, working for his WAY overpriced tickets charge, when he had more bottles to wipe out back stage.
All you little consumer zombie shits that want EVH to act and play like he did when he was 25.. go f youselves. fing whores. sheesh.. How about making the man feel ok about himself no matter what he does huh? That is EVH there.. one of the greatest musicians that ever lived. and what does he get? he's drunk, he's embarassing blah blah blah... pffff
this is why i don't do drugs or drink, Ed was fucking awesome in the 70's and 80's. too bad i was born in 1994, what a fucking terrible decade this has been, the 90's were fine since i was a little kid, but now. yea, what the fuck is this Rebecca Black shit, that's how terrible the music business is now. I read most of Hagar's Book "Red" and I completely understand now about this band. If he didn't abuse alcohol so damn much, he wouldn't have gotten that tongue cancer. and lost most his talent
No, he's not a waste of talent. He's already done more with his gifts than most people ever will. His work speaks for itself. Although yes, he's had gone out of his mind for a number of years, late 90s and on for years.
Also, I can't imagine Ed ever smashing any instruments, ever, before this. It's not something he would do; he had a lot of respect for the instrument and the music. This alone is enough to show that he was out of his mind.
@jaybyrd77 I laugh at this clip because Sammy said that whenever Eddie came out with no shirt and his hair tied up in that samurai clip, it meant he was completely F'ed up on something.
@jaybyrd77 Valerie Bertinelli says the same thing in her book. She talks about this incident in chapter 26 and it is just as nissansentraglx said about the fight with her brother Pat at that show according to her. Probably the biggest reason that he had problems with band members and some of his live performances were his alcohol and drug use. :(
What a fool, a total has-been, on tour to feed his ego and his bank account. Van Halen has no more songs in the oven, the same situation with Kiss, who also are living in the past to collect big paychecks. i don't mind because I do not want to hear bland ,forgettable new music from either band anyways. I would go to a VH show to see bass playin Wolfgang's awesome stage presence.
ed got into a fight with valerie's brother backstage after the show. both sammy and val talk about how bad ed was at this show. Ed was abusing drugs and alcohol so bad.
Van Halen had to incarnations both were great! Eddie seems to be a lost soul. He's a great guitarist, and song writer but at some point it just wasn't enough for him. We all reach this point in our lives unfortunately when you've been told over and over again how great you are and how you were meant to do music and only music you start to believe people. Eddie needs to find something that he finds rewarding and fulfilling. Learn something buying whatever u want makes your mind weak.
Eddie had the "Samurai hair" that Sammy wrote about in his book. When you see a video of Eddie with his hair like that, it means he just came from getting his fix backstage.
Saw VH 4 times in '04. Hershey, D.C., and twice in Philly. The stage and audience sound was out of tune in Hershey, Ed played awful all shows, Sammy couldn't hit the notes, and there was ZERO stage presence.....but goddamn it was wonderful to see VH with Sammy one last time after a decade hiatus! Especially when, in D.C., I was high on percocet, the lights were off, and then,...in the dark.....JUMP!..holy crap, I cried with joy.....till I saw Eddie's stupid-ass hairdo.
I'm going to say what needs to be said: Sammy was the best thing that ever happened to VH. 5150 is the greatest rock album of all time. Pre Hagar-era fans will never "get it." The old VH was great too, but we all coulda had many more great VH albums if my childhood icon, Mr. Eddie Van DickCheese, woulda realized that Hagar was the best friend he ever had...instead, Ed chose to piss it all away. Thanx, Ed, you dick.
Thank God Ed is happy and healthy again. 2004 was painful to watch. Drugs and alcohol are cool when you are 25, but when you're 55, this is what happens to you. He was on a deathbound spiral back then. Now he is FINALLY clean and healthy and he can be there for his son, which is what is most important.
I think Sammy Hagar said whenever Ed went backstage and came out with his hair up in the Samuri do, it was time to GTFO. It was Eddies alternate Schizo....
yah eds a dick you fucking retards. Yup the god of guitar cant smash one fucking guitar. god you people are faggots. Hendrix destroy multiple. and now ed did it once and hes a dick. fuck you people. ignorant little shits. He deserves to do that.
i think sammy was just a baby and did not belong in the band. i do love the way he sings, i just dont think they got along. eddie is a genius. sammy could not handle that.
@xamtofwords everyone in that band is a genius! Just not Roth. He's a great frontman and a pretty good singer but he's a major fucking dickhead. Eddie was really fucked up during this tour. Believe me. Also, Sammy made the band 10x better! Dave is a good frontman like i said and i love his songs he did with Van Halen, but I just think Sammy is the better frontman, songwritter, and singer. How dare you say he does not belong in that band
@haveadrinkonme15 First off, I didn't say anything about Roth. Secondly, I did say sammy was a great singer I was simply stating that sammy should not have been in the band if he did not get along with van.
@xamtofwords LOL you make me laugh. Iif Eddy was such a genius he would not have gone crying to Sammy to lead his band.It took Eddy atleast 9 years before he grew a set and then realized it was his band before he got rid of sammy a year later! I still think Sammy was the better of the two because he got things done and sold albums and made 1 hits on the charts.Just stating fact! And it was not Sammy who could not handled Eddy its the other way around...Eddy was jealous of Sammy finacial success.
@SirRembrant I think Eddy's drug addiction made him very paroniod and jelous of Sammy. This uncontrolable person must have been a terrible person on and off stage.
Sammy stuck it out because it would have cost him 5 million to bail before the tour was over. Had Eddy missed more than 3 shows he could have walked away but he never missed a show. He just showed up and imbarrassed himself and the rest of the band.
I've seen this playing in bands and lost a few friends whom did drugs.
It is a well known fact that during this tour, Eddie was smoking the toxic concoction known as "Crano" which is equal parts crack cocaine and Drano... I'm not shitting you... I heard it from Bill O'Reilly...
I JUST read hagar's book, he and Eddie were at each other's throats. The last concert of the tour, they got into a few arguments and haven't talked since. Eddie was drunk as shit right here, and saying stupid stuff about how he was only messing around. Supposedly that was one of his favorite guitars, too.
I'm guessing this is the episode Sammy was talking about. Anyone know of any other footage from this meltdown period? Funny... even a horrible EVH is still an amazing motherfucker. I saw them on the 5150 tour and Ed was fantastic. Unfortunately, I really have no interest in anything post 1984.
I gotta agree.....as a dude who saw VH smashed front row in 82/83 at Cobo Diver Down tour......I heard a few things by the new line up and wrote them off....I'm sure Eddie, Alex and MA played their asses of, and HAgar is a good singer, but whatever it was that VH stood for late 70s/early 80s was gone....
in restrospect, sure wish I went to see them in the 80s just to see the event.
according to rolling stone march 17 2011 eddie says "you don't understand, you people pay my rent, I love you people"
Thank God he's no longer on whatever shit he was on during this tour. Article also talks about how he cut mikey's percentage and sammy, the band manager and another took their money and gave it to mikey . Now I see why chickenfoot started. Crazy but that's rock and roll.
I read it. It's pretty crazy. Makes me think differently about him. He's a total arrogant asshole. I think he yelled "I love you guys. You pay my rent." on the mic. Him and his brother got shit-faced wasted like every day post-David. Nuts. NUTS ON A STICK MAN.
I saw KISS live in St. Louis in '79.....Paul smashes the guitar then hands out or gently throws the 2 halves to audience. So i guess he uses a fresh rigged guitar every night i suppose.
I thought this was an incident? Everybody smashes a guitar, it's like the oldest trick in the book. I thought something was going to happen AFTER he smashed it
@kruunk1 The thing that makes this unique is that in almost 30 years of playing live, Eddie had never smashed a guitar onstage before. This tour the audience could see the tensions onstage that these guys were clearly not getting along. Then the final song of the final show, Eddie does this. It was very symbolic.
@sadaist I was at the opening of the tour in Greensboro, NC. These guys looked like they hated each other on that night. I couldn't imagine a whole tour of being with people you don't like. Million dollar babies IMO.
@mrv1967 I saw them mid-tour in Las Vegas and the friction between Sam & Ed on stage was so obvious. They were only doing it for the money & so they wouldn't get sued for breach of contract. In the 07/08 tour with Roth it seemed like they genuinely were getting along great. Weird because you would have thought it would have been the opposite.
@alastara This is from 2004 bozo (see title). Cell phone audio technology was a fraction of what it is today. Post a video of from your cell phone today and see how it holds up six yrs from now. It will look and sound antiquated to naive dipshits like yourself who don't consider the progression of consumer tech
@1967travis i agree this new stuff is just wierd the only reason it is is because people came in and said this is music and hard rock was throw in the can when u compare this to the new stuff it doean't seem like half of the work or effort or talent is put into it
UHMM YEAH ME THINKS THAT EDDIE CAN AFFORD SOME SHITTY ON STAGE GEAR AS WELL AS THE FACT IT WOULD BE CONSIDERED A BUSINESS EXPENSE WRITE-OFF. AND KUDOO'S I TOO YURN FOR THE REAL ROCK DAYS OF THE LATE SEVENTIES AND EARLY 80'S WHEN THE REAL BANDS WERE ON THE SCENE HOW EMBARRASSING TO THINK FAGS LIKE M&M,JAY-Z,USHER,AND FAGGITY BEEBER ARE ACTUALLY GETTING TOUTED AS MUSICIANS WTF HAPPENED TO GOOD TASTE?
CAN YOU REALLY BLAME EDDIE? He had to play 76 shows on this tour with a fat asshole like Hagar......LOL......that would make anyone go bat-shit crazy.
I dont blame Eddie one bit for smashing his guitar to bits........if you had to share the stage with a fat, worthless piece of shit like Sammy Hagar --- you would do the same thing
Valerie, her new boyfriend at the time, and her brothers had gone to this show. She mentioned in her book that he tried to choke one and hit the other (during "Eagles Fly" if you can find it from this show), and they're pretty stocky Italian guys. He was in horrible shape and the tour got mixed reviews. Ed was so bad that Alex felt it was time for an intervention.
I got to see Van Halen open for Black Sabbath in NYC. It was '78 or '79. If you could have see THAT band, you would be dumbfounded. It was like aliens had landed. I never heard or saw anything like it. Sabbath came out afterwords & the fans threw chairs at them, they walked off after 3 songs.
@KevinFL --- I think the guys from Sabbath recently gave an interview and confirmed that Van Halen killed their career in 1978........Halen basically blew the Sabs right off the fucking stage.......same thing happened when VH opened for Ted Nugent
@Hunkola The second night was better, Sabbath played a good set. But Ozzy got canned just after this tour. I don't see how this killed Van Halen's career, it became part of their mystique. The next time I saw them, they headlined. They were amazing to watch. I also saw the the '86 tour in New Haven that became Live without a Net, another amazing night. The Cherone line up was good too. They played a lot of early VH. I must have seen them 50 times from '78 through 2000. Then I stopped.
@KevinFL -- You seem confused.......I said VH killed off Sabbath's career in 1978, not the other way around.......even the guys in Sab recently said that VH was just too damn good and having them as an opening act in 1978 was the death knell for the Sabs. I never saw Van Hagar thank God -- that crap was made for soccer Moms. I miss the REAL Van Halen.....the one I saw at the Philly Spectrum in 1982 where the fans were so loud before the band come onstage I felt the place was gonna crumble.
@Hunkola I'm very confused it seems huh? LOL. This was just before Ozzy left. Ozzy was really wasted. A year or so later Ozzy was back with a vengeance. He had one of the most amazing bands, Randy was amazing. Ozzy seemed recharged.. Sabbath returned with Dio at the helm, that was a great show too.It was a good thing for both Ozzy & the Sabs. It was a really exciting time. I was 16 in '78. I was lucky to see some great shows. VH's '82 shows were great.
@KevinFL --- LOL, well glad we cleared that up.......Ozzy getting fired from the Sabs turned out to be a good thing.......Randy saved Ozzy's career and just too bad he died so young......he could have gave Eddie a real challenge in the 80's, eh? The only guitarists who challenged Ed in the 80's was George Lynch of Dokken and Warren DeMartini of Ratt -- but Eddie still played with more passion than both of them. To this day, Eddie is unbeatable because he plays with skill and feeling.
@LuwiigiMaster > Your mother wanks my shaft like a pro. I bet your one of those inbreds that has trouble grasping anything more complicated than a 3 chord progression. Huh huh? Moron,...
eddie smashed his guitar because he was totally wasted and high at the same time and old fires started with sammy cuz of eddies drinking and mike idk if he quit or eddie fired him to put in wolfy
i wish these days, were like they were in the 70's and 80's with journey van halen guns n roses and all them, the world was so much better, i hate rap crap and hip hop its gay! and ya this was cool, he smashed cuz he could afford to get a new one and it was their last show, and it was prety great! :D
@guitarmaniac000 Sacrilege. I still like Eddie. Michael Anthony is the luckiest guy in rock. F-en root notes all the time and let Eddie, Alex and David be the real show. Michael Anthony belongs in a band with U2s Adam Clayton. They should be making minimum union wage for a musician.

@duchessdog70

Paul Stanley smashes a guitar almost every night....but he does it CORRECTLY!!
oLdSkOoLkisS 1 year ago
@oLdSkOoLkisS Paul has a rigged guitar, with a breakable neck joint, that's smashed every night and then taken back together. :)

I thought this was an incident? Everybody smashes a guitar, it's like the oldest trick in the book. I thought something was going to happen AFTER he smashed it
kruunk1 1 year ago
@kruunk1 The thing that makes this unique is that in almost 30 years of playing live, Eddie had never smashed a guitar onstage before. This tour the audience could see the tensions onstage that these guys were clearly not getting along. Then the final song of the final show, Eddie does this. It was very symbolic.
sadaist 1 year ago
@sadaist oh ok, thanks!
kruunk1 1 year ago
@sadaist I was at the opening of the tour in Greensboro, NC. These guys looked like they hated each other on that night. I couldn't imagine a whole tour of being with people you don't like. Million dollar babies IMO.
mrv1967 11 months ago

KevinFL 1 year ago
@KevinFL --- I think the guys from Sabbath recently gave an interview and confirmed that Van Halen killed their career in 1978........Halen basically blew the Sabs right off the fucking stage.......same thing happened when VH opened for Ted Nugent
Hunkola 1 year ago
@Hunkola The second night was better, Sabbath played a good set. But Ozzy got canned just after this tour. I don't see how this killed Van Halen's career, it became part of their mystique. The next time I saw them, they headlined. They were amazing to watch. I also saw the the '86 tour in New Haven that became Live without a Net, another amazing night. The Cherone line up was good too. They played a lot of early VH. I must have seen them 50 times from '78 through 2000. Then I stopped.
KevinFL 1 year ago
@KevinFL -- You seem confused.......I said VH killed off Sabbath's career in 1978, not the other way around.......even the guys in Sab recently said that VH was just too damn good and having them as an opening act in 1978 was the death knell for the Sabs. I never saw Van Hagar thank God -- that crap was made for soccer Moms. I miss the REAL Van Halen.....the one I saw at the Philly Spectrum in 1982 where the fans were so loud before the band come onstage I felt the place was gonna crumble.
Hunkola 1 year ago
@Hunkola I'm very confused it seems huh? LOL. This was just before Ozzy left. Ozzy was really wasted. A year or so later Ozzy was back with a vengeance. He had one of the most amazing bands, Randy was amazing. Ozzy seemed recharged.. Sabbath returned with Dio at the helm, that was a great show too.It was a good thing for both Ozzy & the Sabs. It was a really exciting time. I was 16 in '78. I was lucky to see some great shows. VH's '82 shows were great.
KevinFL 1 year ago
@KevinFL --- LOL, well glad we cleared that up.......Ozzy getting fired from the Sabs turned out to be a good thing.......Randy saved Ozzy's career and just too bad he died so young......he could have gave Eddie a real challenge in the 80's, eh? The only guitarists who challenged Ed in the 80's was George Lynch of Dokken and Warren DeMartini of Ratt -- but Eddie still played with more passion than both of them. To this day, Eddie is unbeatable because he plays with skill and feeling.
