i reason why rahman looks like lip singing is because he does not show any body expression while singing no matter who heavy the pitch of the sound is.second thing while uploading in youtube almost all video and audio go out of phase by few milli seconds.which gives an interpretation that he is not singing which is not correct.

I think his best work ever, as a composer and a singer, is Khwaja Mere Khwaja from Jodhaa Akbar. Try to find a video with English subtitles, it's very soulful and spiritual.

Sorry there is one guys who is great as well which Ar rahman worked with which is Mastero illaya raja, and ar rahman has or had lot of talent people with him when he came to this industry, Shivamani, Harris Jeyaraj, MS vishwanathan, Vairamuthu, all these people worked with him before and some still are and also he had a good technology knowledge which illaya raja didn't have. so illaya has more talant in music but ar rahman has more talent in technology
