That's absolutely true that you don't HAVE to consent to searches, but if they are suspicious (eg. smell of MJ, etc), they can haul you in as well. They don't HAVE to search you to haul you in so make sure you say it as politely as possible (and when you're polite the whole time). ;-)

I do not live near a large city but I have been pulled over in large towns (70,000 population+) and on the highway a total of 17 times. I have yet to receive any type of ticket. I just stay very polite to officer and play a little dumb. I have gotten away with 15 over, with a noise violation, and not having my driver’s license on me. Officers have asked if they could search my car but after I said yes they just looked through the window a little.
