Lovekalay, 50 dead shows still makes you a newbie LOL. I've seen the Dead 362 times and let me say this: while JG for most of his career was a fucking Titan, the greatest ever, towards the end, late 94, most of 95, he was a shadow of his former self. There were some moments (see 95's visions of Johanna in salt lake city) but by then, those of us who really saw shows knew the end was near. Furthur captures the spirit, if not Jer's mastery. Appreciate it for what it is: a good band playing the m
I was sober, AND it was my 1st show. I had no idea what I was in for when I went. I've seen my share of shows since. I never went again until 2003, but caught my share again.
As the gentleman below said tho, while it's very good, there is no comparison. The boys are great, but Jerry & the boys was something else all together ;)
I've stood 3 rows from Jerry. The energy coming off the man was something you could reach out & grab ahold of. It was scary & nearly unbearable yet comforting & wrapped me in waves of rough-edged bliss.
Then he looked me in the eye, & I saw to the center of the universe, I traveled through time & space, & when our gazes parted, I was ripped back into my shoes & the people round me had no idea that I had been gone for eons.
"I don't know what I've been told, it's hard to run with the weight of gold. On the other hand, I've heard it said, it's just as hard with the weight of lead."
there will never be another jerry garcia. you can not reproduce his sound! its impossible. not even warren haynes. its so funny when you see weir or anyone try. they struggle and get so pissed because they KNow ITS NOT EVEN CLOSE.
i saw further last summer. they dont even TRY to sound like jerry when it comes to his parts. lots of keyboards to cover up his solos. go listen to the music never stopped with jerry playing it then go listen to further. its just not even in the same world. the problem with most of the posters here is that NONE of you have ever stood in front of a stage with jerry playing. so when you see further you are confused and tricked. you think thats what IT REALLY SOUNDED LIKE! not even close. wayoff
there is NOWAY that lesh and weir even come close to hitting the intensity that they did with jerry. if you saw the dead live in their hayday (which was from the day they started as a band to the day jerry died) then it is IMPOSSIBLE for you to understand. it would be like someone who met Jesus Himself compared to a person that just read the Bible. Yes you understand but YOU HAVE NO IDEA. so much fun at those shows. so much you could never believe it. NEVER.
TO mr rumsfield. its really hard for you to say how they jammed because you have never seen the dead live. if you havent been front row at a new years show in oakland then it would be REALLY hard for you to comment on that. lesh and weir are not jamming like they were with jerry. im sure they would agree with that.
Was lucky enough to see lesh and friends a few years back at roo and it was probably one of the most intense experiences of my life (I was on a lot of acid tho lol)
have you heard that FAKE DEAD BAND with lesh and weir?? they suck!! nothing like jerry. YOU CAN NOT REPRODUCE JERRY'S SOLOS' they came from the heart and a needle but HEY IT SOUNDED GREAT!!! weir can not sound like jerry no matter how hard he tries. ratdog sucks too. they need to just pack up their instruments and call it a life. jerry's dead. its been over.
no LESH and weir are pathetic. i said they need to stop trying to reproduce jerrys music. remember it was JERRY'S music. yes phil can play the same bass but weir cant play jerry. thats just reality. THE GRATEFUL DEAD were the BEST BAND TO EVER PLAY in my estimation but without jerry they are NOTHING and shouldnt disrespect the dead by trying to play it without him.
@lovekaley2006 you dont think that jerry would want the music to live on without him? i disagree with you. i would have to say that he would and your right that its not the same without him but i think its pretty sweet that lesh and weir are still jammin just as hard as they used to with or without jerry.
ive been to 50 dead shows and i took LSD AND SMOKED AS MUCH GREEN CALI BUD AS MY LUNGS COULD HANDLE!!! i miss jerry. i was at laguna seca when they filmed touch of grey with all those puppets. AT 1am they opened up the gates and let EVERYONE IN!!! THEY WANTED a bad ass video and they got it. those were the days, camping, dropping and smoking. i miss you jerry.
i don"t know whose backs that strong. What is with the squares that were bitchin" about payin" a minimal cost to get in and listen to stuff like this as well as all the other stuff that went down. I guess there are losers in most crowds.
Jerry's vocals are just spot on! I always loved how he enunciated so well, especially in the early years. What a great version of this tune! Hunter's response to Altamont and the end of the loving vibes of the '60's. And Jerry on a SG too! I think anyway and I don't know if I've ever seen him play one. Great vid!!!
Tonight went to a concert and...I spent a little time on the mountaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin spent a little time on the hill. gd forever im 23 young fans will keep the scene going
Some trivia: The festival only played 3 cities: Toronto, Winnipeg and Calgary. 'Couldn't get security for Montreal. Quebec flag (6:27) probably a Quebecer just announcing their presence! NFL Quarterback Joe Kapp seen at 4:33 and Ian and Sylvia Tyson about to go on stage at 6:13. (Sylvia wrote: "You Were on my Mind" hit, and Tyson wrote "Four Strong Winds" - according to Neil Young, greatest Canadian song ever written)
Thank You for this tip. I just found the DVD and have ordered it. Very anxious for delivery. I'll never forget when we drove up to see them in San Francisco in probably about 1977, at an indoor venue. I wish I could remember the name of that place. Also saw them at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado at night, UCLA Pauley Pavillion, and UC Santa Barbara (outdoor/daytime).
Dear Rock, Oh yea! That Train ride is very famous, at least to us dead heads. Bob Dylan,Joni Mitchell and Garcia was standing out the caboose and saw a BIG, VERY BIG black bear scratching his back, standing up against a tree. LOL Garcia ran back and told everybody about this huge bear and his amazement that this bear, was like, 16 ft high! ROFL
It's really no wonder why so many people don't understand what a great band they are. This isn't even that bad of quality, but it's not that good either. They must've had some of the best and worst sound techs imaginable. Some of their work shines and some sounds raw and drunk. I wanted to hear the studio version, which is impossible to find on youtube.
I pity the 13 LOST souls who took the time to 'dislike' this video. Ya gotta be really f**** up to do that, instead of just being on your merry way to another 'better' video. I'll give em this: focus is slightly soft on the vid, ok ok... but this is simply AWESOME. Always was always will be.
Jerry deserves BIG credit. A bunch of "peace and love" hippies showed up at this venue (Festival Express, Toronto) and became violent (including injuring horses), as they demanded "Free music for The People". Before things got really ugly, Jerry defused the situation, agreeing to play for free at another park nearby. RIP, Jerry - one of the good guys.
@TheMitchymitch13 - this is the Festival Express, Toronto, 1970. I was there, and I was square (too young to smoke a joint!) Check out the documentary about this extraordinary event. Only released a few years ago, due to legal hassles. The entire crew travelled across Canada BY TRAIN. Never done since - and they all jammed and partied their brains out across 1,000's of miles. Some great moments - check it out.
@Glamdring81 - Ha! That is a funny question....I was 15 and had never done so, PLUS I was with my big sister...and just would not have done that in front of her....I did catch up though....
@rocktenniscat - very nice vid! I've read a lot about the Festival Express from various sources (mostly Lesh) and it sounds like it was an epic time! Thanks for sharing.

wow it's just a song and honestly The Dead are an institution and Phish are great musicians but they did not begin the jam scene like the Dead did and they just are carrying a torch.
The Grateful Dead are the quintessential American roots rock band..and that's all that needs to be said.
@meatstick0 This is my fist post as a "Youtuber", and don't get me wrong, ain't nuthin' wrong with phish, but come on man... respect your elders! the dead have pulled me from the pits of hell more than phish has... IDK... I still love my phish, but i just watched a 3 1/2 yr. relationship crumble in front of me 2 days ago, and I turn to the dead to get me through.... that don't make me weak!
I also believe that Jerry's music should be an elective study in schools. Math, English, Social Studies and Jerry Studies. He was too brilliant for many to comprehend, but time will judge that he was well ahead of his.
@jfrockon Okay, they also bored me in the late 1980's, but you shoulda seen them in 1970, when they were young and energetic and blazing new trails of sound! Trust me, they rocked.. No spontaneous act stays fresh always, but in their heyday they had had it going on.
@jfrockon The Dead were fantastic in 89, but I have no cause to complain about your comment, since I no doubt feel the same about whatever kind of music you evidently prefer.
@jazzkid66 E7 is a chord, not a scale, or Key. Jerry likes to move from a Penatonic to natural scale. But the answer to the question is the song is in the Key of E, not E7
very nice :) this was before my time but anyone remember when they broke it out Chinese new year in Oakland early 90's after not playing it for so many many yrs? I get chills thinking of my surprise and delight when it happened.

@willplaut Thankful everyday that I saw Pigpen's Dead (agreed -the "real" line up )in late 69 on the tour that recorded much of "Live Dead ".my first concert ever Ron gave them an edge.Jeez- even back then ,people thought the mime troupes ( the between band entertainment) were obnoxious .:)

@meatstick0 WHAT?!
joshmasters420 1 year ago
@meatstick0 This is my fist post as a "Youtuber", and don't get me wrong, ain't nuthin' wrong with phish, but come on man... respect your elders! the dead have pulled me from the pits of hell more than phish has... IDK... I still love my phish, but i just watched a 3 1/2 yr. relationship crumble in front of me 2 days ago, and I turn to the dead to get me through.... that don't make me weak!
joshmasters420 1 year ago
Who cares who's better between the Grateful Dead and Phish? In the end, they just copy Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters like everyone else... ;)

I also believe that Jerry's music should be an elective study in schools. Math, English, Social Studies and Jerry Studies. He was too brilliant for many to comprehend, but time will judge that he was well ahead of his.

I saw the Dead in 89... maybe the lamest most boring famous band in history. Lame assed musicians.........geeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzz LMAO!
jfrockon 1 year ago
@jfrockon Okay, they also bored me in the late 1980's, but you shoulda seen them in 1970, when they were young and energetic and blazing new trails of sound! Trust me, they rocked.. No spontaneous act stays fresh always, but in their heyday they had had it going on.
marinman39 1 year ago
@jfrockon The Dead were fantastic in 89, but I have no cause to complain about your comment, since I no doubt feel the same about whatever kind of music you evidently prefer.

E Major
BonzoCaptBob 1 year ago
@BonzoCaptBob E7 baby! which is actually A with the d in the scale ;-)
jazzkid66 10 months ago
@jazzkid66 E7 is a chord, not a scale, or Key. Jerry likes to move from a Penatonic to natural scale. But the answer to the question is the song is in the Key of E, not E7

The sound is great on this, crystal clear it brings out the R&B crunch in the song...
