The British army was one of the most formidable fighting forces in WW2 (along with the USSR). They went through so much and as Churchill said: "We will never surrender" and we didn't no one did (except cough France cough) and we never will.

T-28s were garbage, T-35 were garbage and neither got very far. Vickers 6 Ton, or T-26 was quite okay for its day, and was equal, but was entirely a 6 ton. Everything Russian died easily.

@martynrobin121 the germans really didnt fear the shermans that much, there is a reason why they were nicknamed 'tommy cookers'. 1 for 1 the germans had the better and more sophisticated tanks, however in some instances they were too complex for their own good, eg field repairs were near impossible. the russians did play a major role but it wasnt just them doing all the hard work, britain played a equal role in defending europe and asia.

I liked the collection of pictures, although some of them were from WW1 and the Northern Ireland conflicts. Most of my family at the time served the british army in WW2 and most of the British wars before that. Baring in mind that 95% of serving British soldiers were conscripts - bank clerks, blacksmiths, etc, who would otherwise have never joined the army. An English soldier said "the attack would have worked, a buddy of mine was gaven an old ww1 artillery piece and his job was to cover 2 square miles." Without our troop support,tanks,equipment,etc there would have been no way that Britain would be able of defending herself for much longer.

Its very true that it was the British that saved Great Britain in WW2, there is no doubt on that, and yes they were critical in N Africa, North Atlantic, Med and of course the D Day landings, but for overall victory in Europe we needed the yanks, but they needed the British just as much and its Empire as well. Without the South of England as base for the D Day landings, it just wouldnt have happened.

Funny thing. Without British victory in the Battle of Britain, there would be no total Allied victory. The British navy defeated the u-boats with great American and Canadian help. The RAF bombed german cities and industry into rubble. The Allied victory in North Africa took more German and Italian prisonsers than the Soviets at Stalingrad (19 British Empire Divs, 3 US, 1 French were involved in this great victory. British intelligence broke both the German and Japanese codes. The list goes on.

The BT series reached a total of 8,000+ machines, but these were no more than American licensed Christie machines with 45mm guns added to them... T-28s were garbage, T-35 were garbage and neither got very far. Vickers 6 Ton, or T-26 was quite okay for its day, and was equal, but was entirely a 6 ton. Everything Russian died easily.

@martynrobin121 the germans really didnt fear the shermans that much, there is a reason why they were nicknamed 'tommy cookers'. 1 for 1 the germans had the better and more sophisticated tanks, however in some instances they were too complex for their own good, eg field repairs were near impossible. the russians did play a major role but it wasnt just them doing all the hard work, britain played a equal role in defending europe and asia.

I liked the collection of pictures, although some of them were from WW1 and the Northern Ireland conflicts. Most of my family at the time served the british army in WW2 and most of the British wars before that. @Johnnystrychnine Perhaps you'd better look up Imphal and Kohima which constituted the largest land defeat the Japanese suffered. Baring in mind that 95% of serving British soldiers were conscripts - bank clerks, blacksmiths, etc, who would otherwise have never joined the army. Australian soldiers on the other hand were all volunteers. You're a poorly educated individual and a fitting end to your miserable life would be to end it under a bus.

The Brits are cocky, not all of them, but those redneck ones are real cocky pricks. I have read a bit on WW2 and the part Brits played in the fronts in Europe. If it weren't for the Lend Lease program intoduced by W. Wilson the UK would have fought with nothing. America, Canada and other commonwealth countries aided the Frogs and Sheperds Pie munchers. But America alone did most of the fighting on the most vicious fronts. Why won't Brits accept that? Is pride so hard to swallow?

And the only reason the Axis did not, and I mean not, obliterate England is because you had the Russians on your side after they were disillusioned with the Nationalist Socialist argument of racial might over communist ideological revolution. look at it is this way: Russia on one end of the book shelf and America, Canada and other commonwealth countries on the other book end squashed the Axis. @dburford9 Actually yes. All it would have taken was one Fallschimjager drop in6to England and you would have collapsed. An English soldier said "the attack would have worked, a buddy of mine was gaven an old ww1 artillery piece and his job was to cover 2 square miles." Without our troop support,tanks,equipment,etc there would have been no way that Britain would be able of defending herself for much longer.

As for todays American's who dare criticise and slag off the British armed services of WW2 they are nothing, and contribute nothing to this part of British history, and whatsmore i dont care. Yes the endeavours, battles and sacrifices will be forgotten by many in time, but not this generation of Brits, nor the next, so you'll still have people that will speak up.
And remember it was the British army that took the German surrender in the North first, a full day before the yanks.

The Americans were exposed to nothing buy victories but the Wehrmacht was not threatened by Americans or the British. The British were very cocky because of their history and then they get pissed when they find an army that could obliterate them. I never hear of a British soldier being mentioned as someone who turned the tide besides Montgomery.

The British fought until the bitter end but having said that, they used up alot of foreign supplies and equipment coupled with troop support with limited air support. Where the Wehrmacht was on 2 fronts,the British were on 1.

Its very true that it was the British that saved Great Britain in WW2, there is no doubt on that, and yes they were critical in N Africa, North Atlantic, Med and of course the D Day landings, but for overall victory in Europe we needed the yanks, but they needed the British just as much and its Empire as well. Without the South of England as base for the D Day landings, it just wouldnt have happened.
Where else could they have done it? New Jersey? No.
So yes, a very British victory WW2 was.

Funny thing. Without British victory in the Battle of Britain, there would be no total Allied victory. The British navy defeated the u-boats with great American and Canadian help. The RAF bombed german cities and industry into rubble. The Allied victory in North Africa took more German and Italian prisonsers than the Soviets at Stalingrad (19 British Empire Divs, 3 US, 1 French were involved in this great victory. British intelligence broke both the German and Japanese codes. The list goes on.

Well yes the Japanese territory expanded and claimed certain areas of the British Empire, but did we give up? NO! We held Burma and fought the Japs back through the jungle with the help of the Australians. Then the Americans came later and had successive losses in the Pacific until the allies built up strength and beat the Japanese! Dont read one book and say the British are crap!

@spartand001 when the japanese forces invaded the british in south asia were seriously under equipped and under supplied and that situation stayed that way until 1945 . Some very bloody battles were fought in Burma including Kohima and Imphal in 1944 which was the most costliest japanese defeat at that time after them the 14th army smashed the Japanese all the way back to the Burmese border in a few months. hardley a british loss

listen the British commanders WERE SO GREEDY in ww2,Montgomery convinced Eisenhower that frost was gonna push his thirty corps or XXX corps up far enough to secure the bridge at Arnhem to cross the Rhine river into Germany,but Montgomery was stupid enough to push all of the XXX corps up enough to get them split up from the Americans so the panzer divisions trap them in a corridor and smashed them. So Montgomery and Churchill are responsible for the 17,000 allies lost in hells highway R.I.P XXX

@xWXDXx Each commander made mistakes in their own right. Yes Operation market Garden was a partial failure but its unfair to list a few examples and say all British Commanders where Greedy. Those 'greedy' commanders kept Britain free e.g. Battle of Britain, Dunkirk, D-Day etc. So think before you speak!!
