  • amaretto 50-50 scotch.

    every party at humps house,

john & him discovered the perfect whisky, in a crappy van, while katharine blew red

  • her first appearence.

    ie well, fasten seatbelts

  • wow the sexiest smoker that was in films,no wonder bogie married her.she was so hot and intense.love her smoking scenes

  • Thumbs up if Nick Naylor brought you here!!

  • @mez2011 you're right ;D thanks 4 smoking^^

  • Nice catch

  • This scene couldn't get any hotter! Better than anything I've seen nowadays! Lauren is the epitome of women! Love the look he gives her--who couldn't?

  • That's one cool lady right there!

  • hot....damn.....

  • LOOK AT THE WAY HE LOOKS AT HER. that's definitely not acting. :]

  • I can see why he loved her.

  • The film that started a million women smoking. Fortunately, Lauren is still with us, going strong at 86!

  • wonderful:-))

  • Best movie scene evar!

  • What happens next!!!!!!!

    Jk, Ive seen it.

  • So pulled together, that look--great suit, so contemporary she could wear it today and it wouldn't be out of date.

  • Bacall smoking a cigarette is the epitome of Hollywood "glamorizing smoking;" and I love it. No women can smoke a cigarette like smok'n hot Lauren Bacall did in these '40's era movies.

  • the thank you for smoking reference. well played, player...

  • She is freaken HOT. And she's an even better actress. geez.

  • she held her head down to combat nerves

  • Lauren was shaking. to combat this she held head down. This became the look and was sexy at time.

  • she was nervous and held her head down to combat that

  • Lauren said she was shaking when they shoot this.. well it's certainly not showing ! Mythical scene !

  • girl43. She was very nervous when she did this scene. Instead of shaking she held her head down. This sexy pose became "the look" for women. It was unintentional. In Big sleep she was also shaking when she was pouring him coffee. Bogie always tried to calm her down. He was always calm and cool except maybe for his intense quest to do the scene the best it could be done. Back then they acted for love of the profession. Not for 25 million per picture and to put out many movies

  • wont post

  • HOT

  • The way she looks to her left just as she lights the cigarette at :25 OMG! I want it as my BG

  • what is BG?

  • Background or wallpaper

  • background?

  • 30 seconds of smouldering hot footage!

  • i can see why people were so in to smoking. I've never seen it look so sexy.

  • Dang you cut it short, should've cut it after she says "thanks" and tosses the matches back.

  • Lauren Bacall-the coolest actress of all time. Her voice, her look, the way she carried herself..,just so cool and perfect for a cool cat like Bogart.

  • I want to be her, she is so cool

  • damn, she was cool in this

  • they married i think, she later became a director

  • HAHA. Yea, they were married. A year later after they finished this movie, until his dying day. They had 2 children together.

  • No, you're talking about their second movie together. This scene is from the first one, where they met & fell in love.

  • beautiful then.. beautiful now.

  • wonder how many times she missed ctatching the match box and they had to re take lol

  • I don't know, but Bacall confessed that she was so nervous (this was her film debut) that the match she had to light kept on shaking from her trembling hand.

  • One of my favorite war-time intrigues ever. Kind of a re-arranged version of Casablanca. Instead of Morocco, they're in Martinique. He has to help out French revolutionaries and outwit the Gestapo controlled Viche agents. He doesn't own the saloon, which doubles as a hotel, but he seems to command a lot of respect there.

  • And people do gravitate to the hotel in this story like they do to Cafe America in Casablanca. There's two sides of Sam the Piano Player in this, Hoagy Carmicheal the actual pianist and drunken-but-loyal Eddie, played by the excellent Walter Brennan.

  • Howard Hawks was supposed to direct CASABLANCA but dropped out because he thought it was a "musical comedy" and didn't know how to direct all the scenes with music*, including the famous "La Marseillaise" scene. I think that TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT is Hawks' musical comedy. I love CASABLANCA more, but this movie is SO much fun.

*it's ironic to note that almost all of his other films have his characters bonding through playing music and singing.

  • Funny That About Howard Hawks Alegedly Being Inept With Musicals

When 9 Years After This Film He Made

A Brilliant Musical Comedy "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" Starring Marilyn Monroe And Jane Russell A Brilliant Director Howard Hawks One Of My Favorites:

    1.Alfred Hitchcock

    2.Billy Wilder

    3.Sergio Leone

    4.Howard Hawks

    5.John Huston

  • Yeah it's a great film, but remember that he didn't direct the actual musical numbers of GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES (which, for a musical, don't have a lot of songs) but his fingerprints of the two Hawksian Women and how he handles comedy is so evident.

Frankly, I find it hard to believe that Howard Hawks considered himself inept at any genre, he was such a master, and one of my very favorites.

  • Yes He Was a Master He Made Some Excellent Westerns I Think Rio Bravo Is His Best Along With El Dorado And Red River

The Only One I Have Not Seen Is Rio Lobo What Is It Like? He Also Made A Brilliant Film Noir "The Big Sleep" Superb Film

  • This is my all time favourite film and Bacall was THE most gorgeous woman on earth.
