This scene couldn't get any hotter! Better than anything I've seen nowadays! Lauren is the epitome of women! Love the look he gives her--who couldn't?
Bacall smoking a cigarette is the epitome of Hollywood "glamorizing smoking;" and I love it. No women can smoke a cigarette like smok'n hot Lauren Bacall did in these '40's era movies.
girl43. She was very nervous when she did this scene. Instead of shaking she held her head down. This sexy pose became "the look" for women. It was unintentional. In Big sleep she was also shaking when she was pouring him coffee. Bogie always tried to calm her down. He was always calm and cool except maybe for his intense quest to do the scene the best it could be done. Back then they acted for love of the profession. Not for 25 million per picture and to put out many movies
Lauren Bacall-the coolest actress of all time. Her voice, her look, the way she carried herself..,just so cool and perfect for a cool cat like Bogart.
I don't know, but Bacall confessed that she was so nervous (this was her film debut) that the match she had to light kept on shaking from her trembling hand.
One of my favorite war-time intrigues ever. Kind of a re-arranged version of Casablanca. Instead of Morocco, they're in Martinique. He has to help out French revolutionaries and outwit the Gestapo controlled Viche agents. He doesn't own the saloon, which doubles as a hotel, but he seems to command a lot of respect there.
And people do gravitate to the hotel in this story like they do to Cafe America in Casablanca. There's two sides of Sam the Piano Player in this, Hoagy Carmicheal the actual pianist and drunken-but-loyal Eddie, played by the excellent Walter Brennan.
Howard Hawks was supposed to direct CASABLANCA but dropped out because he thought it was a "musical comedy" and didn't know how to direct all the scenes with music*, including the famous "La Marseillaise" scene. I think that TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT is Hawks' musical comedy. I love CASABLANCA more, but this movie is SO much fun.
*it's ironic to note that almost all of his other films have his characters bonding through playing music and singing.
Yeah it's a great film, but remember that he didn't direct the actual musical numbers of GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES (which, for a musical, don't have a lot of songs) but his fingerprints of the two Hawksian Women and how he handles comedy is so evident.
Frankly, I find it hard to believe that Howard Hawks considered himself inept at any genre, he was such a master, and one of my very favorites.
