When you do muzzle flashes, try cranking them up a bit with some "Glow" and "Gaussian Blur" in AE. I can totally tell they're just the stock "Action Movie Essentials" effects, but if you blow 'em out with glow (which will light the area around it, too!), and have them match the shot's depth of field with the blur, it will look much more original and professional.
