it's a nice track, I just get the feeling that they rush the chorus, especially the way jagger articulates 'soul' briefly and moves fast into the next line. IMO dobie's band nailed the tune and he gets a more memorable take than the stones, but this is their signature style so kudos to being unique.
This song is great. I always wonder why the Stones have so much of this great stuff in the can and then don't release it. Who can say that the Stones don't have Soul?
@UrukHai659 - Use Firefox and add the extension "Easy Youtube Video Downloader". It will allow you to download the audio as an MP3 file. I just did it and added it to my iTunes. :) Have fun!

@Devincoughlin "Drift Away" is a song written by Mentor Williams and originally recorded by John Henry Kurtz on his 1972 album Reunion. In 1973 the song became Dobie Gray's biggest hit, peaking at number five on the Billboard Hot 100, though it did not enter the charts in the United Kingdom.
I've been trying to find this on Itunes and amazon and found nothing. I'd like to have this so i can listen to it in my car. Does anyone know how i can get this version? There is a slowed down version by the stones but I prefer this one.

This is not the Rolling Stones but an awful sounding imitation. Listen to 'Angie' on youtube and hear what Mick Jagger really sounds like and it will be obvious that this is a FAKE!!!
@Gwendolyne3 it is common knowledge this is a stones recording, it's listed in session info books.the reason it may not sound like the stones to you might be because it's not a finished track and keith does not play on it.. btw jagger's vocal on angie was speeded up
@jaggermorrison2010 You could compare this to any other Rolling Stones song and notice the difference but Angie was around the same time this was supposedly recorded. Jagger's vocals on Angie are not speeded up, you can see he's singing it live on youtube and it's a slow song. There is no video of them singing Drift Away so there's no proof that it's actually them.
@Gwendolyne3 the stones cover of drift away is basically a studio rehearsal.demos their next album after "goats head soup" was planned to be one side of covers and the other live songs from the 1973 tour but that idea was scrapped and became "it's only rock and roll." so many other artists at the time were covering "drift away" that the stones decided not to bother going further with it.
This IS the Stones! Well, most of them anyway....... Keith didn't play on it. But that is definitely Mick singing, Mick Taylor on guitar, Bill & Charlie doing what they do best, and Nicky Hopkins on piano.
It's a damn crime this was never officially released.
@FORDCOUNTRY7885 How do you know Keith didnt play on it...he is listed as not playing on Moonlight Mile as well ..Doesnt mean he is not on it...There are two guitars on this...Guess your saying Mick played both of them. Mick could have overdubbed another Guitar this would explain why it wasn't released cause it cant be a Stones song without Keith being on it!
@MrJsmyers Keith wasn't present for many released Stones songs.Moonlight Mile's one,& several on some forgettable post"Only R & R" albums, according to liner notes. Also, true to form,Jagger/Richard credited themselves for M.Mile & "sway",penned by Jagger & Taylor,& Richard only sings (bg)on sway. Taylor is also the main git & creator of the rif on Honky tonk Woman. If Keith is there,he's the rhythm...He got much worse before he got better.Who knows what he played on from"Exile" thru"Only R&R".
@dragonflyshards Keith played the lead on Honky Tonk Women!,not Mick taylor..You cant always believe the Liner notes and Inner sleeves of records. being a Guitar player I can hear the difference between Keiths playing and Micks playing...the guitar riff on 'Drift Away' is definately Mick Taylor...If you notice, keiths playing is a little rougher than Taylors and has a more Chuck Berry/Bluesy feel to it than Mick Taylor..Mick Taylor would not have played Honky Tonk Women that basic like Keith did.
@dragonflyshards Keith was on this version dude...Keith was not present on the slow 1973 version sometimes called the beatles and Rolling Stones...I just looked this up...he was not on the slow version but is on this one and you can here the 2 guitars on this and you can only hear one on the slow version!
@FORDCOUNTRY7885 It seems to me no-one knows for sure who is actually on it because some think it's both the Beatles and the Stones. I know it's supposed to be a bootleg and maybe Mick Jagger is mucking around and adding a lisp to his voice but if they haven't confirmed it then it could just as well be a tribute band.
I have the recording of this song over 20 years.... at this time it was very rare!!! today it isn't while people put it for everyone on the internet!!!
@imaStonesFan Who asked you to put your 2cents in our conversation - I'm a stones fan? I'm a Rolling Stones fan also, but I also like the Beatles, The Who, Journey, Genesis, and many, many others!!! I ain't tied down to 1 Group, I bet you believe the Stones can walk on water, Huh!!! There are plenty of Artists, out there and they sound great in their own musical way. THANK GOD for change!!!
