cant F¤%&ng do it! been trying for hours! i never get a combo i allways hit the ground! how do i time the jump? and do i stand completly against the shelf turtle is on? really need an awnser that can help me before i loose my mind
You don't score points as easily with it. I get it in Mario 3 solely for the extra hit. I've had 10 million points in Mario 1 once, back when I was in school (and supposed to be sleeping for school the next day...).
It's mostly a matter of timing and not maxing the jump height or jumping too low. I've done it in world 1-2 as well, if I recall, upon completing the game (since the owl-like enemies (the short, bulky things) turn into beetles (the dark bluish things with otherwise identical properties to the turtles). It's much harder in world 1-2 than it is in 3-1 which makes it a good challenge if you're after one.
@ulillillia that's not completely true. A bug is a programming error that you can and should fix, and when it is fixed, only that particular bug goes away and nothing else changes. A glitch, however, is NOT a programming error, but a flaw in the interaction between 2 software processes OR the software and the hardware. A glitch can be (but isn't necessarily) caused by a bug, but it is not a bug. Also, it's very hard - if not impossible - to fix, because there's no actual error in the code.
There's a bug where, if you're falling and you grab a mushroom (mushrooms with certainty), you can jump again by holding the A button. It's one of 3 known bugs in this game. The video focuses on one. There's also the minus world one (I have a hard enough time getting that to work).
like i said, they put it in nintendo power. id have to say that MABEY they didnt know and were aware of it, but i think they intentionaly put it there.
I never use emulators. I use the real console. To record videos on my computer, I use a TV tuner, a device that converts a TV signal into something the computer can read.
Actually, it bugs after you go over 127 lives. The lives counter uses a signed 8-bit integer (256 numbers are available, of which half are "positive" and half are "negative") So once you hit 128 lives, it rolls over into the negative section. When you die, the Game Over sequence triggers if your total number of lives is 0 or lower, and obviously, anything negative is below 0.
If you were to get 129 more lives after it rolls into the negatives, you'd be in the positives again, back at 1.
I can't tell what variable type it uses because it only shows up to 19 as readable so I have no idea what happens. Back when I played this, I thought it was 99. Now that I'm into programming, I can understand this and how variables work.
I like how Nintendo is so aware of this trick, that if you try it in Super Paper Mario, you actually LOSE points after awhile (well, EXP, but your EXP is your score). Then the shell breaks... (I think it just evens out the score to what it was before doing the "trick".
It's actually just a matter of timing and not jumping to the highest possible. The timing part of it is the trickiest part. Note how much the turtle is over the edge. Land on it when the turtle is this far out and it becomes much easier. You get two chances and it requires the big Mario in order to work (though I've done it with little Mario - it's much harder).
You have two chances to get it and you must have the larger Mario in order for it to work. If the first turtle is good (sticks out as much as I have it in this video), jump when the other turtle nears the area and land on it at the low end. Then, you need to jump a few times at the right height to get the trick to work. Don't jump the highest, rather, about 3/4 of the highest (as I've done).
I don't have the DS. Only the Gamecube is the newest Nintendo console I have. The NES is the next newest (or, if I can find the SNES, that would be the second-newest, but even that is old).
I would always do it on that one level where you get 2 extra lives and then kill yourself. That way I could see the different symbol for each new life in 100+ lives.
What level would this be? The method I've shown here is the easiest and fastest way to gain lives, especially if you're having troubles with world 8-4.
This was my favorite thing to do when I played SMB1 as a kid. You always had to watch not to go above either 99 or 255 lives or it would reset back to 1.
This reminds me of the most UNfair thing EVAH. I landed on the step ABOVE the turtle and i died. no time up just a horrible glitch.

My friend Kacey used to be able to do this trick, he believed it was easiest to do on the 3rd step for some reason, and that's how he did it.
It was nice to watch it done again :)

It's called a glitch, it's not a bug.

A bug is also a glitch. They're the same thing (synonyms). Look it up in the dictionary.

the 1up trick isnt a bug. Nintendo put it in Nintendo power. they were aware of it. so, its a secret, not a bug

Did you ever reflect on the possibility that they found out about the "bug" after releasing the game and then covered it up?

I could never do this trick. The only bug I could get off correctly was that endless minus 1 water world.

100% of the time I attempted the tons of lives bugs I was unsuccessful by a factor of -100.

You have to land on the turtle at the right time (or "boppa sinsy" as I once called them, after the way they move).

Okay, thanks for the information. Guess I'll keep trying!
