She is beyond compare, and there be more young and trendy, but there is no more powerful, almost spiritual ,and dynamic than this power house. The great, and beautiful Patti Labelle. Miss Patti Labelle.
I promise, i've never heard this song before (i believe), and hearing it from my girl Pattie, you know i luv it, luv it...i miss singers holding notes-straight notes. This is truley a broadway type performance.'
I remember watching this when it first aired. This is from "The Tonight Show." After this performance, both Johnny Carson & guest Buddy Hackett were in awe...and so was I.
AMEN........no one and I mean no one can touch this today......and very few ever could when ever she was on TV i would rush to get the vcr ready so I could watch it over and over and admire ........now I remember why! GOD BLESS YOU PATTI
Im convinced that when she shuts it down, we will have seen the last of performers like her. She's a dinosaur in the age of chick singers that are either CLUELESS about what to do with a microphone..OR they seem to need all kind of vocal enhancements to get them thru a song. When you stick a microphone in Patti's hand, she fills in the fuckin blanks. There's NO ONE like her, bottom line. I feel honored to have lived during the era that she sang in...
Boy I just LOVE to see these old clips of Patti. The performances had a different edge to them. The voice had so much demension and ease. The soft was warm and engaging, and the powerful was so natural and purposeful.
LOL thank you for making it plain! Can you imagine anyone flapping their arms to create a vibrato? Any fan knows that's one of her signature gestures.
Every time I saw her perform I got goosebumps all over, she always blew me to pieces. Her singing style is so amazingly deep & powerfull, she burns the stage. I love her passionate unique artistry, she's the #1 voice of soul & a blessed force of nature. Incredible stratospheric talent & what an entertainer! It's because of artists like her that I dare hope for humanity. Talent has almost become an empty word except when you witness somebody like her show you what it truly means.
The late Peter Allen would be so proud. He wrote the song, and I assume he never thought it would be sung like this.....unbelievable ..amazing. Bravo!
well, Ive said before that they dont make 'em like her anymore. She just stood there flat footed, with just a simple rhythm section behind her and she burned that song to ashes. Most of these chicks out here today, wouldnt know what the hell to do without a track and some lip synching to back them up. 20 yrs from now or when ever Patti leaves us, people will watch clips like these in amazement because we'll understand that the "old regime" of divas, was MUCH better than the present one.
My first experience of seeing Patti Labelle was on The Tonight Show... i was so young, and blown away... Yes, thanks for posting this. My opinion, some of Patti's best was on TTS, class and perfection, as everyone was. You did your best for Johnny (boy i miss him). Any others from the Tonight SHow?
And I should add that this was performed on The Tonight Show as you can hear Johnny Carson at the end speaking about her performance. Wonderful. Thanks for posting this.
This song, "Once before I Go" was written by Mr. Peter Allen and is featured as the first song on the score from Broadway's "The Boy from Oz." The story goes that Peter Allen wrote the song, and Ann Margret chose to close every Vegas performance with it. This version is beautiful, but you must listen to the Broadway score version where Mr. Hugh Jackman, playing Mr. Peter Allen, sings it in the first act, right after the overture. So beautiful.
Pay attention, children, this is how a legend does it. First she gives it to us via the hair, then the drag, and she finishes us off with that last note. NO ONE does it like Ms. Patricia Holt!
@gussiee Patti has publicly embraced her given name. While she is a world class diva, she certainly hasn't forgotten the bridges that brought her safely across. I don't think she has any issues with her real name. If so, ask her to call me and I'll apologize. :)
I am privileged to have attended many Patti Labelle concerts from the early 1980's 'til present(and looking forward to a Baltimore concert in September). Everytime I see her smile I am proud to be a fellow Pennsylvanian, and everytime I hear her voice I thank God for her talent.
Aretha was and still is an excellent vocalist. Whitney always had a cute voice; however neither one have ever sung with the power that Patti does or held notes that long.
Rubbish Aretha may be a very professional artist in terms of interacting with her audiences, but she has put on just as great perfomances as Patti. How dare you. People please once again think before you write impulsive comments.
I know this comment is a year old BUT.....sorry dude I am a major Aretha fan and a major Patti fan. And I mean major.....HOWEVER Patti wipes the floor clean and then some more with Aretha. Aretha is a very good musician and supreme vocalist BUT Patti is way out there......WAY OUT THERE.....Sorry.....
@WinsWard ..I agree. I dig Aretha, if just for historical purposes and for the pureness of her voice, before cigarettes fucked her pipes. But if she tried to hit that last note that Labelle hit, Im afraid that one of Arethas titties would rupture....that note was simply "inhuman". In fact, was that Patti or some alien from outer space??
a few people can hit a note for more than 20sec, but I'm sure no one can hold it with so much power, loud, vibrato ... greats singers if they could hit a powerfull note like that after 3 or 4 seconds will be out of breath.
This was Patti at the peak of her vocal power. She just belts them out so effortlessly as if it's nothing. I love this woman so much, the sad part is that we don't have singers in the new generation that have such talent singing-wise. Fantasia (or mini-Patti as LaBelle likes to call her) tends to carry LaBelle's stage presence and ability to squeeze the life out of each song she touches, but other than that, there's hardly no one out there that can really SANG!
I totally agree!! I just saw the heffa (FANTASIA) perform in Atlanta maybe lastyear before her run on Broadway. She sang Prince's Purple Rain and I swear it started raining in the theater, because she ripped the damn roof off. On her next song she laid on the floor and sang as she put it "Imma get comfortable and kick my shoes off and lay down like Momma Patti" she blew the crowd away! Fantasia is the TRUTH!
And she just came outta a big note and then SNUCK a breath in to hit that last bangimn note!....She worked the hell out of that diaphram and grabbed it in on out!
I believe that the only reason she hasnt recieved the recognition that she has EARNED is that she is real you get what you see. Other performers put up a false front, and that seems to be what people look for.. I believe that she shows onstage the same thing you would get if you met her in a normal atmosphere. She is Real....... a beautiful heart. and a beautiful lady...
Patti uses her vocal texture and gymnastics well in this song. You can feel her commitment to deliver this song to your heart!! I love this womens talent.
I have been a fan for a long time and there are times when Patti sings...and then there are times when she sangs! She sang here! My goodness...I remember going to the Budweiser Superfest and this is how she killed us teenagers!
Gosh, ever since I fell in love DEEPLY with ms. Patti, I knew she could do an awesome lot with her voice (let alone all the other miracles), but THIS??? Wow, well over 20 secs? Supernatural and divine, don't you agree? Lots of love from Sander from Amsterdam:-)!
I liked those hairstyles she wore back in the day. To me they match her big voice and personality. They're big, unpredictable and out of this word. Just like her voice.
my bad cuz msbrit89 said 2 seconds but i think she meant 20 seconds....yea she hit that note on "patti labelle 100 stars" but i like the other one more then this one....shes just great!
Thanks for posting this vid, real gem! If only more people would give her the recognition that she truly deserves, what a blessing the Empress of Soul is!
You are absolutely right! I think that Patti is the most underated performer in the music industry. Like you said she hasn't received anywhere near the recognition she deserves. She's been snubbed by the Grammy's and a lot of people in the music industry. It's sad when no talent people like Madonna gets put on a pedistle. But women with real talent receive no recognition at all. Anything will pass as talent these days. But we know who the real singers are.
