In one of their fan question podcasts the producers stated that this black thing is just faulty CGI. It was supposed to be a part of the engine which flies away in the explosion.

Due to a mistake, the animation was running backwards so that it flies into the engine instead out of it. This was not discovered in time and so it made its way into the final cut that was then broadcasted.

Just like this one it also made its way through the entire production process and into the broadcast before they realized that there shouldn't be "hatch" written on the official Dharma papers. ;)

no he is true, there is three sifferents "objects" that hit the engine in this episode (only one in this extract). It's not really clear here but it's obvious on slow motion on DVD.

The "object" doesn't push the guy in the engine but is more likely making the engine exploding.
