I seriously don't think enough people realize how epic this race was. Not only was the Phelps x8 gold medals on the line, but the fact that the USA were the underdogs,the fact that this was Lezak's third (and probably final) attempt at winning this race at the olympics, the fact that Bernard talked trash before the race, (which was completely ironic considering Gary Hall did the same in Sydney 2000 and then the US team lost), the fact that Lezak swam 46.06 split...Un-****ing-believable.

Putting the US vs. France thing aside. What is most amazing is not just Lezak's split of 46.06 (or something) but the fact that he came back from the lead that Bernard had. Bernard is one of the fastest 100m freestylers around. Lezak *crushed* him - all in the last 75 meters. If this was a movie, no one would believe it.

This kind of comeback in a 100m freestyle is impossible. I tell you it is impossible!

This is just something you don't see in swimming...even the announcers were so sure of themselves until 25 meters from the finish. That still blows my mind to this day. Lezak is an inspiration to swimmers everywhere. Don't back down when it looks like it's all over.
