A literal translation doesn't fit the music.

That is probably why we have survived centuries of exploitation and attempts to suppress the language, culture and spirit of Wales and we are still here. Lovely anthem - only problem is that every time i,ve been to Anglesey  i've only heard scouse/ Manc accents-hardly any Welsh . Sign of the tourist dependent times i suspect. Enland dare not have an anthem as it would 1)probably be accused of being racxist and 2) Englands parliament is being run by incompetent Scots anyway. Many English had learn welsh to get Jobs in Wales, where else in the british isles would this happen ? A decline in Welsh is not all down to goverment, have you ever met an Indian child who could not speak his mother tongue, despite being born in England ? i doubt it.

Well, things shouldn't be tried to be translated from it's own language into English. English is crap ( ironic as I'm writing in it ... ) but it doesn't have enough words to translate into, and most foreign language words seem to have many more meanings in English than their own language.
