I know exactly what Niles felt all that time...I was engaged to a woman but was truly and deeply in love with a girl who seemed out of reach...that was '91 and I love her still. Although she is far away in times and distance I still see her in my dreams. The biggest regret of my life: losing Dev.
You can tell how shocked Daphne is to find out that she has feelings for Niles. She knows she does but she doesn't acknowledge them until the psychiatrist said something. I mean the way she was looking at Niles and the way she reacted when he touched her arm, you could see the love she had for him in her eyes.
Look at the dress she put on to meet him!
Niles and Daphne go down in history as one of the best sitcom couples EVER!!!
I loved the ironic switcheroo of Daphne being in love with Niles but involved with someone else/Niles being all oblivious. I think if there was one problem with the season 1-7 romance arc, it was that this stage of the relationship didn't go on long enough. It would've been hilarious to see Daphne acting the way Niles had been acting for the past seven years, and vice versa. I think jealous!protective!Daphne would be fucking awesome, especially since Mel was such a nasty piece of work.
@grumpytosnowwhite We did get experience a bit of jealous protective Daphne during Maris Returns and Murder Most Maris. If you haven't see the episodes it's the ones where Maris comes back into Niles' life and asks him to help her with her abusive and controlling boyfriend only it gets out of hand and she ends up accidentally killing him.
Daphne gets royally pissed and for good reason, she was pregnant and Niles was lying to her and sneaking around. Those episodes were awesome!
@missycah1 with regards to your comment about Americans not being able to distinguish different British regional accents a texan guy I got chatting to one time asked me what part of AUSTRALIA I was from! So I kind of see your point... with reference to daphne's accent it sounds to me as "northern" but not really any particular area...its defiantly NOT Liverpool (scouse) as one person pointed out...and its not really mancunian...it sounds a hybrid of cheshire and mid yorkshire...
@colinclarke1000 Well Jane was born in Ilford, London and raised in East Grinstead, so it's hard telling what what she was really speaking here. Honestly, her accent didn't change a whole lot when she was out of character. There was a slight difference but not much. It didn't really matter in the end though. At least she was really British speaking British, not American speaking fake British.
@ddjmfan so only a british person is ever allowed to speak with a british accent? satires, clean goofy fun, or just not having a large budget are now out of the question? i trust that the british use nationals every time a different accent is used. from a sociological standpoint, why does it matter? it is good to know, though. in british society, anytime i hear a non-british accent in the street or on tv, i can rest assured the speaker is a native of that region. it really is a great empire.
Unfortunately, for us Americans, and most of us love the English accent, we can't tell one from the next. I guess it's the same as someone from across the pond who can't hear the difference from a Georgia or Mississippi accent or New York (the boroughs) and Long Island. But we love it just the same. But, I can see how it would frustrate those who know.
I love this show but find Daphne's "Manchester" accent embarrassing! For a start, she would probably be the only person in Manchester called that! Jane Leeves is from East Grinstead - about 250 miles away - and seems to be trying to voice Daphne in some generic northern English accent that doesn't actually exist.
God, people, have you never listened to Jane Leeves talk about her accent? She KNOWS it's not Manchester. The reason her accent is the way it is, according to Jane Leeves herself, is because the producers were afraid Americans wouldn't be able to understand her. Therefore, she came up with a watered down, comic English accent. It's like listening to ppl speak like a Texan. They always get it wrong, but I laugh b/c it's meant to be funny. I don't turn into the regional accent bitch police.
@reenactor19th I agree with you. It's so annoying to come on here and see people complaining about the way Jane spoke as Daphne. It wasn't meant to be an authentic Mancunian accent, and she knew that. I didn't have a problem with the accent that Jane spoke with as Daphne, I thought it was cute. Jane is English and she didn't have a problem with the comedic undertones of her country used on the show. She knew it was all in fun and for entertainment purposes. It was her job!
I am just seeing Daphne, wenn Jane on Desp HWs..now that's surprising..especially since she's playing a psychiatrist.. oh wait! ahahaha the real irony only comes to me now! i was like..crazy dapne as a shrink..only NOW i am like..hello what's THIS show here all about? xD i'm nuts xD
That Daphne's therapist, in saying "I'm sorry, our time is up" has a double meaning. Aside from the comedic value, it also infers that Daphne needs to figure out how to proceed with the knowledge that she may be falling in love with Niles, and falling out of love with Donny.
Wow. I come on this vid to watch the clip and see what folks are saying about the comedy and it seems everyone is fixated on the damn accents and folks are accusing Americans of either being dumb or believing what they see on tv. So basically its a comment thread full of small minds. There are people in the UK and EVERY country as well that believes what they see on tv. Ignorance is universal. But everyone's favorite past-time on youtube is bashing yanks. Oh well. Have fun kids.
I only started watching Frasier because of Niles and Daphne. their secret feelings for each other made their interaction irresistible. I love true love even if it's just acting. wish I could be so lucky. more shows should have this kind of plot. love is beautiful.
Ok so Daphne doesn't really have a Manchester accent (im from Manchester too :) ) but Niles and Daphne are my ultimately most favourite tv couple ever, i cried when they got together!! brillant!
the difference is that we laugh at the american stereotypes for what they are, whereas the americans laugh at british stereotypes because they actually believe they are true. Americans have very little exposure to other cultures generally.
America is the most diverse country in the world. Every race and creed lives here (and in large numbers). And several immigrants and new citzens. We may not be culturely sound on everthing, but are you suggesting your country is more in tone to other cultures?
I'm CyrusGuitar and I'm against negative stereotypes! Americans are big dumb rednecks and they're all ignorants and have stupid stereotypes about others.
Right, and Frasier is a really dumb redneck American show. No nuance at all.
Cyrus, I recall hearing a Brit complaining once about how American characters in British shows are always from Texas or New York, and they were always stereotypical. Now I didn't do a survey, but it's a little idiotic to say that one entire group of people does stereotypes in a much clever way than another entire group.
In King of The Hill, Hank always argued with a neighbor, originally from Lause. One time after an argument Hang muttered "Chinese and their stupid stereotypes"
God do I miss these characters...silly, I know, but I loved all of them. Man did I want to get invited to a dinner party at Frasier's with Niles, Dad, Daphne, and Eddie all in attendance...then a sherry on that faux balcony...and Lilith could have dropped by and in her own droll way, been the life of the party.
I miss you Frasier, but you live on thanks to Lifetime Network! 10 to 11a.m. Pacific Time every weekday.
So we will have our own dinner party, a pithy conversation, hit the Opera, then engage in a bitchy, silly arguement over the production followed by a makeup sherry and hug.
not to mention rolling our eyes as niles falls over his feet trying to please daphne, and enjoying the spectacle of fraiser being terrorized every so coyly by eddie

Her accent to me sounds really over the top, as if she is really putting it on. She also keeps saying loads of 'english' phrases that, being english myself, i have never heard said!
My worst moment was when she first went to live with the cranes and upon realising they had an indoor toilet said 'i love america'.
How insulting to manchester, and england in general!!!!
I do know that she is english, but in my opinion she hasn't 'adopted' the mancunian accent particularly well. Somebody from Essex would naturally find it hard to imitate a northern accent. My complaint was more about the stereotypical way that England is presented in Frasier. This is, of course, the only complaint I have with such a brilliant programme (with lots of Englsh fans!) as this.
RosaMilui, Jane Leeves is NOT an Essex girl! East Grinstead is in Sussex! lol
Having said that, don't be too hard on her. She's an actress, she had to say the lines; she didn't WRITE them. The writers had to satisfy a yank audience. All those odd bits here and there about a deprived childhood, loads of brothers, cramped conditions and violence at home, were meant to be funny for Americans.
But if Daphne had really spoken the way Mancunians do, the yanks would have needed subtitles.
Of course it didn't help that the actors that played Daphne's brother and childhood friends probably have never heard of a Manchester accent let alone know how to do one. I wouldn't have known either if I weren't such a big Oasis fan
Like ive said on another video, this is meant to be a comedy, so what if someone takes the mick out of us Brits once in a while, its only a bit of fun, and for all you know the director or whatever may have said to her, just try and ham up the accent or something, anyways whatever the reason it doesnt matter if the accent isnt perfect because its a comedy where things are mean to be funny =)
Im sure you like Frasier and it is a great show so enjoy it instead of critising. :D
