@ValleyOfTheDolls67 what a horrible thing to say...you must be jealous and I question what your face looks like since you do not see the beauty in Lee Grant.
@JOJO22858 Madeline Kahn was of course brilliant in Paper Moon, but to be fair, Tatum was too. If a 9 yr. old little girl's ability to carry a film is not Oscar worthy, I don't know what is. Despite Tatum's addiction problems (and how could she NOT having Ryan O'Neal as a father), she remains a brilliant actress today.
@mgblue I think the cameraman had sarandon confused with ronee blakely b/c they look alike. If you read sarandon's lips, you see she deduced the same thing.
Dzanier and all you other morons what the hell are any of you saying? Haha someone left the loony door open again.
Back on topic, Lee Grant was good but I agree Ronee Blakely gave a better performance, Brenda Vacarro's nom was kind of odd too as that movie was a stinker.
I don't get this award: Why anyone considers Beatty as an above-average actor/director/producer/wirter is beyond me. Shampoo was a dull film and seemed like an ego trip. His filmography is vastly overrated. Nominated for 4 Oscars in 1978 but it must've been a weak year, because Heaven can Wait is about as thematically complex as Ghost Town.
Even if Shampoo was good, Lee Grant's part is almost quantifiably unremarkable. Her part was the go-to-girl b/w Hawn and Christie and they both outacted her

the allow people...free people...to disagree with one political ideology from another, is the the american idealism of free speach..free worship..and the ability to disagree with one's government and still love it and strive for it's improvemnts...that is the american dream fulfilled.
Lee Grant..what an actress...and she bravely stared down the comittee for un-american activities during the 50s and was blacklisted for years because of it.
She was probably just like a lot of other actors and actresses, especially Jewish ones. She supported Russia and communist ideals. I don't agree with tactics like McCarhty's, but everything he suspected about their being a strong link between hollywood and communism, which is not only the biggest threat to America but the biggest threat to the world, was 100%accurate. He knew how great the threat was, although his tactics were questionable. I respect Lee Grant a lot less than you do.
American 'freedom & liberty' and all that crap is just that...crap. You are a nation of flag waving christian fundermentalist neo fascists war mongers that exploits the world and can only survive in your grotesque state thanks to COMMUNIST CHINA financing your trillions of debt. Absurd CUNTry.
I think Lily Tomlin was probably the smartest to vehemently underplay her role...which it did require...and she was incredible...but Ronee Blakely deserved to win because without her, Nashville would not have been Nashville.....she represented the dream and nightmare of the music biz and of the American dream....I liked Shampoo but Nashville was the movie of the decade for many reasons.
Lily Tomlin deserved this award. Watch her during the song "I'm Easy," just sitting there realizing the song is about her. That is the hardest thing in acting: sitting still and slowly reacting. She nailed it. And no affront to Ronee Blakely's juicier role, but it was nowhere as nuanced as Tomlin's, and Grant had no reason to even be nominated (if her, then why not Goldie Hawn or Julie Christie?).
And why was Louise Fletcher awarded Best Actress for what was a supporting role?
This was another classic case of vote splitting for two supporting actresses in the same film. It happened to Kikuchi and Barraza for "Babel" and it will happen again this year to Kendrick and Farmiga in "Up In the Air."
Grant is a terrific actress. It's too bad that Hollywood did not use her more often and more wisely. I love her in the last vignette in 1971's "Plaza Suite" with Walter Matthau.
I acknowledge that Lee Grant won in the Best Supporting Actress category. My only complaint about the 1976 Academy Awards was that Jack Warden didn't win in the Best Supporting Actor category for SHAMPOO. He was excellent!! Lee and Jack should have won back to back Oscars!!
Lee Grant...had and still do have major crush on this lady. Her, and Janet Rule. Boy, do I pick the easy girls....... I believe Lee teaches acting in New York. Ah, to be young and look like George Maharis...then maybe they would at least look in the general direction of the city I live in........
Here's a fact about Lee Grant you might not know - She turned down the role of "Dorothy" on The Golden Girls. They wanted Bea Arthur from the get go but she declined at first and offered it to other actresses including Lee Grant calling it a "Bea Arthur type role." Finally they got Bea Arthur to accept to play the role.
I rememeber the documentary that followed Lee Grant and the other nominees up through the whole process of Oscar. And that wonderful moment when, after winning, Lee Grant turned to her husband in the limo and shouted "We're in the car!" Priceless stuff! Congrats, Lee - especially in such a tough competetive year!
I don't get all the thumbs down. Lily, Ronnee and Lee were brilliant. They can't ALL win. I prefer Lily to the other two, but 1975 was damn fine year for this category and Lee Grant was as deserving as the other two. I haven't seen Vacarro's work, but Miles was excellent in Farewell, My Lovely.
@ragemanchoo82 She was demonically funny. I also love her in "What's Up, Doc' and, especially, "Paper Moon". It's sad that Hollywood never fully realized her talents.
Does anyone know what song the orchestra is playing? It sounds like "Wouldn't It be Nice" by the Beach Boys which would make sense because that song plays over the end credits of SHAMPOO.
It was definitely Susan Sarandon. Notice that her then-husband, Chris Sarandon, leaned over into the picture. By the way, the best thing she ever did was keep his last name. It sounds just a bit better than her maiden name, Tomalin!
If you ask me Lee Grant is the only sober one. The cameraman was high, Sylvia was drunk, Lily was on a LSD trip where she thought she was at Buckingham Palace, Brenda was high (look at her hair)....so good job Lee for staying sober.
I think they made a mistake and capped young Susan Sarandon who also looked rather embarrased about stealing the spotlight from the one who its belongs to
Yes, I think she refused to testify against husband Adolf Manoff (father to Lee's daughter Dinah Manoff, the girl who commits suicide in "Ordinary People").
Aww- did you see how Lily Tomlin was clapping for herself for a few seconds when they announced her nomination before she was like, "oops!" and stopped?
Because her brother, Chris Sarandon was up for a Supporting Actor Oscar for "Dog Day Afternoon" and the cameraman screwed up and focused on his sister, Susan, instead of nominee Ronnee Blakley for "Nashville".
She afterwards told reporters "there was so much alcohol in the lobby that you either fought them or joined them. And you know I never fight", so I assume she was drunk. A great lady who managed to steal the sole scenes she was given in her Oscar-nominated roles.
Certainly. She is wonderful. She should have won for either Paper Moon or Blazing Saddles. She was also memorable in quite a few other movies. I love her.
don't get why she won for this. Maybe it was payback for how she was screwed over with all the blacklisting before. Anyway she was okay in Shampoo, but not even the best supporting performance, Julie Christie was better than her. I think Lily Tomlin should have won. She was incredible in Nashville.
That's so funny! They are obviously showing the actresses on a screen at the ceremony. Look at Susan Sarandon as she realises she's up on the screen and shouldn't be!
Just when you made that comment on Ronee Blakely resembling Susan Sarandon. I re-watched this clip and realized that is Susan Sarandon with her then husband Chris Sarandon.(Who was a nominee) Camera guy made a mistake focusing on Sarandon instead of Blakely.:D
Lee is so ugly and weird looking...i've never liked her as a woman..she looks like a drag queen.
BUT!!!!!.....
i do like her as an actress..she was brilliant in Valley Of The Dolls.

don't get why she won for this. Maybe it was payback for how she was screwed over with all the blacklisting before. Anyway she was okay in Shampoo, but not even the best supporting performance, Julie Christie was better than her. I think Lily Tomlin should have won. She was incredible in Nashville.

What are you people talking about, Lee Grant deserved this! She was better than the rest.

Lily Tomlin should have won it hands down.

Lili or Ronee should have won, but Lee Grant became afterwards and remarkable documentary filmmaker. She's a good actress too.

Brenda Vacarro was a horrible bitch when she's drunk, which was often.

Lee Grant is an amazing actress, but I think this Oscar should've gone to Lily Tomlin. Can't complain though about Grant getting an Oscar.

Lily Tomlin RULES!

That's so funny! They are obviously showing the actresses on a screen at the ceremony. Look at Susan Sarandon as she realises she's up on the screen and shouldn't be!

This clip is disturbing on these levels:
1.Lee Grant's "wedding" dress.
2.Sylvia Miles's "look"
3.Ronnee Blakely is Susan Sarandon secretly.
4.Brenda Vacarro's "style"
AND
5.Lily Tomblin, and everything she did in this. Espically her crown, WTF!!!!!!!!!

All great actresses, but Lee Grant's performance in Shampoo is one of my favorites. She totally deserved this!

Thank you, finally someone else agree's that Lee did deserve to win!!!

Lee Grant didn't deserve the Oscar but I am glad she at least won one, she was really good in Detective story, Airport 77 and Voyage of the damned.

first they showed Ronee Blakley and then they showed Susan Sarandon.
