i miss the 90s, music was epic then now its turn to shit and getting worse. no emotion nothing anymore. i may have been a kid when this song came out since im 21 now but i remember when this came out.. damn! great music.
My Spanish teacher told my class about this song. Every time I hear it now, it burns me up inside. The thought of my best friend committing suicide by Valium is just too much for me. Somehow I cant stop listening though...Thank you Mr Jung! This is awesome!
Growing up, I hated this song because I felt it was terribly overplayed. Now, I kind of miss the simple, catchy, and straight forward songwriting of popular 90's music.
If indeed this song came out in 96 as ms (mr?) pinkcarson claims that is probably part of the reason I liked it at the time b/c I was a freshman at that time. Nevertheless, I often still come back to this one. Something stuck I guess.
@ostrichfeathers96 Brian Vander Ark (writer and singer of the song) "When I wrote this song, The Divinyls had a song out called 'I Touch Myself.' The TV was on, she was touching her face in the video. Very sexy. So, I can't be held responsible because she was trying to be sexy, trying to seduce me, etc."
Good question, I always wondered that too. If you go to SongMeanings . com, there's a lively discussion of the song's meaning. Some people thing it was a seduction on her part, others think she was wiping away tears. Who knows? Guess we could always ask lead singer Brian Van der Ark. He's always out touring solo in coffee shops and stuff. :)
@thephatone1002 People throw rice at weddings, but since they stopped the baby's breath, they've also prevented their shoes from being filled with rice.
@thephatone1002 You know how people throw rice at weddings? They stopped the baby's breath, so they prevented their shoes from being filled with rice.
I didnt listen to PoPular music even in the 90's but jebus kriest you cant argue with anything between Smells Like Teen Spirit, and With Arms Wide Open. Creed marked the end of an era, ushered in by studio artist
This song plays in my head EVERY day for about the last month...I can't figure out why? I just love it. Sad and depressing though. Another good one from the same time is "Brick" by Ben Folds
There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age. Remember it's not if your young or old, it's what you do with that time that define's you. But, if you're a freshman, don't worry about a thing. You're in the most creative environment you can find. There's also a slight chance you could bang a drunk cheerleader too, so you got that going for you.
i feel bad for anyone who grew up in the 90's and only learned to appreciate the 2000+, i was lucky enough to have people in my life playing older music.. 60-90's there is so many people around my age who are just sheltered when it comes to good music, thinking the stuff thats coming out these days are good and talented, its quite sad, i was born in 90' and like i said im fortunate enough to have learned about the older music, i have yet to hear a great song come out in the last few years
@wtficantgetaname69 I agree with that! I was born late eighties, and I feel so cheated that I was a kid into sugarpop. Luckily, we have the Internet now-a-days and I can listen to greats whenever I want.
@Superbranson Bob Dylan didn't write this song. The Freshmen wrote it, and it was launched in 1996. I remember when this song first came out, and there was NEVER a mention about Dylan!
the 90s were such a great decade for music and this song is the perfect example of that. i'm so glad i was born in early enough to appreciate songs like this. the new generation isn't gonna have any idea what good music from truly talented bands sounds like.
I played this song a lot when my grandmother died and I had a fight with my best friend in the same week. So it still makes me feel sad... :( It's very nice, though.
Strangely, I never actually heard this song until 2009, and ever since I've never got it out of my head... "What made us think that we were wise and we'd never comprise"...
For a funeral? I LOVE this song, but I woulda went with Enya's "Memory of Trees" or Mozart's "Seranade for the Winds". If the church would allow it, the instrumental track ONLY, for "Green Acres".
This song is so powerful. Was played at one of my sister's best friends funerals. Everyone was in tears, such a horrible thing to die so young and in such a cruel way. R.I.P everyone who dies before their time <3
The fact that Brian Vander Ark, lead singer, wrote this song after an abortion is true but she didn't really kill herself...fiction. The fact that its fake actually makes the song worth a little less to me. still great hit for one hit wonder brits.

@jony7779 This song is based of his life experience. His girlfriend got pregnant with his baby and before he could get an input on the situation she got a abortion and she killed herself....
@dgiomett she writes all her own music and has a phenominal voice, seen her live and was close enough to hear her even without the mic . blew me away Just because someone has more than a t-shirt and jeans doesnt mean they arent genuine
wow what can I say......This song came out a year after I graduated high school LOL damm I'm getting old LOL!!! The 90's were good to me good times and memorys.
Just heard of this song today, great. But some of the comments here are totally the opposite of what the song is talking about. Some of you snobs and bigots need to realize good music is good music (Rap, Rock, Country, Classical, Blues). Yes some of the vocals today are rather lame, but if we leave our racism at the door, we can feel good music and keep moving as one.
actually he is tlkin about a girl who od'ed on a drug he gave her and how it isnt his fault she died because he gave her the drugs but he still feels guilty and how freshmen and pretty much all kids think it can never happen to them
I think this song is incredibly sad, about a girl committing suicide over an abortion she had. How can people act like it's just about doing Valium or just simply being innocent? it's about the complete loss of innocence that becoming an adult through college can do.
@sterces48 Yowch! Makes me feel extremely old... Especially when they play stuff like this, and like Nirvana, on the classic rock radio stations. -__-
@sterces48 - I was a freshman ( haha) in 1997 and I would play this song all the time- then I met my boyfriend, we danced to this at the first dance of the year , we dated 8 months and we broke up . The secret to life....others say....is not how independant we can become....but rather, how INTER-dependant we allow ourselves to be. Nothing we ever posses, care about, own, create, become - EVER HAPPENS without OTHER PEOPLE. Ever.
Jay Brannan's remake of this song is so good. I like it tons better than this version with the same great lyrics and more of a fitting background music
Jay Brannan's remake of this song is so good. I like it tons better than this version with the same great lyrics and more of a fitting background music
song stopped me from commiting suicide it made me realize that life is worth living even though it gets hard my words to everyone out there keep on going because it always gets better
this is one of my favirote songs of all time.love this tune, one of my favs.so passionate and heartfelt and powerful.this can definitly be felt one way or another.
this song came out when i graduated high school and was entering college. i found it ironic that this song should come out at exactly that point in my life. listening to it now is painfull due to the memories it dreges up, hence the irony. personally, i always thought of this as generation Ys' breakfast club ending theme, but hey, that's just me.
@immyluver Oh, I am not saying that all music today is crap. The 90's had their share for sure. However, I am merely stating that most of the music available today is so overprocessed.
the 90's was the best era i was born in 85 and was able to live thru the whole thing. there was no bullshit war gas price was great and there was great real music. there wasn't evan a thing called pop then just new-kids on the block now look the music is crap gas price is crap and the war is crap
the lead singer came into my high school and talked about this song and what it actually means.Perry high school - my school. the drummer still lives in michigan but the singer is doing something in california
Every time I hear this song, it brings me back to the summer of 97 and cruising around with my friends in my moms Geo. Good memories.

I like it tons better than this version with the same great lyrics and more of a fitting background music

this song came out when i graduated high school and was entering college. i found it ironic that this song should come out at exactly that point in my life. listening to it now is painfull due to the memories it dreges up, hence the irony. personally, i always thought of this as generation Ys' breakfast club ending theme, but hey, that's just me.
