Still have this memorized after playing it seven years ago. My I started to tick off my jazz professor in college gme since I choose to use the intro to warm up all the time.
Played this song this year (freshman). The bass clarinet part at the beginning is great. I always hear bands play this sooo slow, and this was a pleasant exception. The ending to this song is also just too epic for words.
I remember struggling to play the second variation on bassoon in high school. The director eventually told us to let the tenor sax player handle it. =) Sounds like Mr. Camphouse did the same thing. Ridiculously hard on bassoon.
I take it this is a highschool band... i'm an eigth grader and i'm playing this in band for UIL which is in a month or so, and we're sightreading this tomorrow.
nice job, i wish we sounded this good when my high school band played this. i had the trumpet solo, and i still get nervous when i hear the middle part before the solos haha
The oboe needed a little more practice on that solo - the notes kept catching. I played this solo in high school and it took me a while to be able to play it without them catching. Then again honor bands don't get soo much practice time together so that's probably why...
I apologize, my former comment was incorrect. It is not the TMEA All Region Band from North East Texas. It is the Four States Bandmaster's Association Honor Band, made up of high school students from Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.
Oboe player rushed the solo a little bit. Other than that, an excellent performance. I played the 3rd trombone part on this, way back in '88-'89 school year in Penn Hills Senior High School (13 miles east of Pittsburgh, PA).
I remember playing this song as first trumpet in high school. This band is great. I just hope we sounded as good. While watching this band i can see my friends and I learning and rehearsing this song. Thanks very much!!
lol in my school the saxes play the second part of the vivace, measure 53, where there are low Bb to the low c and Eb. quite hard, yet the saxes here did not play it. Too hard?
We're playing this at my middle school. I'm not sure that the previous commenter's "were playing this in 6th grade" is true, but whatever. The only trouble we have is staying on tempo. But I play bass clarinet so I don't have too much control over it. Hopefully we play it well in the concert tomorrow!
RazorZRX, I totally agree. Unfortunately, I play tenor, not alto, so our part is easier :( The sad part is though, this band did better in probably an afternoon than our varsity band has done in over three months, though not all that time was dedicated to this song.
We're playing this for a band festival, and our Varsity Band is playing it. Reading some of the comments, our middle school band throughout all 3 years would never be able to play anything close to this, though we learn to play instruments in sixth grade. If an eigth grade band can pull this off, kudos to you guys, because ITS FRICKEN INSANE!!!!!!!
@andyb1314... yeah, your 8th grade band is either freakin amazing, or you guys watered it down, as this is a very hard piece... and besides, who says high school bands can't play this piece?
It was good...but it just seemed like 2 dynamics to me. If those piano moments are considered soft, then that's not really a noticeable difference...anyway, I love this song, my band is doing it this year for winter concert.
lol so am i. i play french horn and we've alrdy had our winter concert but we r still playing it. all region tryouts for us are on saturday. i cant wait.
Love this piece!!!!! We played this my sophomore year in high school and we played faster than this....not because we rushed it's because we raised the tempo in the beginning. Anyway it was the most fun I've had playing trombone in a while. I also play some parts of this on my guitar lol I'd play this every year if I could...This band sounds bad ass, so many musicians I don't know how they got the balance and intonation right, but they did!!!! Great Job!
This is most likely a state or region or even county honor's band. Students from the qualifying region audition and a certain number makes it in - they NEVER have the opportunity for matching uniforms. I've done this kind of band all through middle and high school... High Schools make their kids wear marching uniforms to represent their school. I hated these bands because a lot of players were overly cocky, not very well, couldn't work together, always out of tune and tried to be the loudest!!!
ok....how does that "add %fmt=18 to the video URL" work? Ive seen it work miraculously on other HQ videos.....and i totally laughed at the early trumpet entrance at 1:03!!!
Wow, we played this way back when I went to school in 1983!! Clarinet player, and I loved that piece!! I'm noticing the different uniforms. Was this an all-state band or something?
I was so close to getting the oboe solo in this song last year but was beat out by an upper classmen probably just because she hadn't ever had a solo before that. But it was still fun playing it.
I sight read that song today! i think its really good and i love my part! i think we're were going to do it for band festival =] When i hear it like this though... i really want to play it lol!
A symphonic band can be only wind and percussion. A wind ensemble can be only wind and percussion. It's not the size nor members (seeing as strings would mean orchestra), its what they play. This would be a symphonic band because this is practically a work that requires a philharmonic sound.

Oh yeah! And if the person who played oboe solo in this reads this, you sound good! Just woulda sounded better if you hadn't rushed. probably nerves though so I dun blames ya
My High School band played this last year. It sounded amazing! I played bass clarinet [i know oboe, alto sax, trombone, and most string instruments though] and because we didn't have a barri sax, i got, I believe, it's the third movement of it, the dotted half notes? all to myself before oboe came in ^^ We're a band of about 45 but we know how to give off this kinda sound. ^^/
