Did you ever resolve this problem? My older iMac (I bought it in 2004) is now doing this - I just shut it off to wait until I had the money to have Apple look at it... which may be a long, long time. I'm hoping I can fix it myself (I resolved a few big problems w/the PC laptop I'm now using, and I really know nothing about computers - just used creative problem solving & the internet).
hmm...very strange. personally my i3 iMac (cheapest available) is running flawlessly. just as smooth as the day i bought it, if not more so. only issue i have with it is when i'm out and around dull Windows PCs I get withdrawls. I hate using Windows PCs now. I'm just too used to my Apple Keyboard, Magic Mouse, LED monitor and OSX. I can bare Windows 7, but XP just bores me.
You probably already resolved your prob, one of the profs over at MIT who teaches computer programming probably could of hooked you up with a solution
Why do people somehow always want to bash on the competing product?
I am a PC user and i know how they are practical and cheaper. I see no reason to hate on a Mac because ive tested them and found that the experience with a mac is much nicer and well worth the pay.
1) The title states that the user who posted the video has a problem and I provided a solution. In
2) In my country we have the right to say anything anywhere. I don't know what kind of third-world pit you might be living in. Also, please take some time to learn what an advertisement actually is, considering I made no mention of brand.
3) Again, I provided a very viable solution to the problem.
4) A "step" needs to guide the audience through a task. "Thanks" is a noun, not a step.
@coffeeandsugar20 Because it would be a terrible thing if people actually took time to learn about technology. Because it is so difficult to plug 6 different components in. Because it is so hard to pay the $50 building fee on online stores. Because it's so hard to ask your friend/relative, who (statistically) can build one. Because owning a PC means I a gamer virgin, even though the extra $1,500 I didn't spend on a mac bought me a spring break vacation with more ass than you will ever dream of.
I'm having this same issue, I posted a discussion about it on apple support forums. I cant post links for whatever reason, but its under "Your Intel based iMac display" The title is "Display Issue - iMac freezes, display becomes pixelated "
I'm having this same issue, I posted a discussion about it on apple support forums. I cant post links for whatever reason, but its under "Your Intel based iMac display" The title is "Display Issue - iMac freezes, display becomes pixelated "
I use both macs and pc's. The whole "oh my god look a mac is broken hahaha" argument from pc users is ridiculous. They are machines, they are prone to errors, no one claims they are perfect machines. I have had one of my macs for 6 years and it froze on me twice. Can pc users come close to saying something like that? no. On the other hand macs are probably the most restrictive of machines, especially since you are dishing out a fortune for them.
I just wish Mac users, Linux/BSD users and PC users would get along. Every OS has it's strong points and weak points. Windows has lots of software developers based around it but it gets more viruses and the BSOD, Mac is more productivity-based and has (good) picture and movie software pre-installed, but not as much software and costs a bomb, Linux/Unix/BSD is open-source, has quite a few programs but is hard to use if you're computer illiterate.
i got a similar problem with my i7 MBP. When i start eyrTV and i have plugt in my 24"TFT after a while the screen goes black and only the mouse is capable to move but not to click
Exactly the same problem with my 27" Core i5. Screen went south after only ONE day of use. Was told by Apple that the screen had gone and I needed a new one(!)
Upshot was that I had to take a 21" as they'd "had less problems with those" (unbelievable), and get a refund for the balance from the dealer. Needless to say, this one's been perfect.
I have a problem similar to this on my iMac — only it's a PowerPC and it's a model before the newest. It's screen constantly has vertical lines that often shift over to the side for a second and go back. It starts up fine (usually) and then 3 seconds after the screen is fully loaded it does this. As long as I don't touch the cord or adjust the screen it's fine for a couple of minutes...what do I do?
That top bucks pays for itself instantly. I can expact that iMac and the Macbook Pro I am on to last until the year 2020 and maybe longer. The reason about Macs is that their OS's don't need top specs to run well. I have a PC down here that I've had to put at least 400 dollars into just because it's sluggish. It's a piece of crap.
@charliebrown0028 not necessarily...we [Mac users]don't say Mac's are perfect...because they do sometimes have problems. We love, mostly, it's high tolerance to programs for artists and the fact that there are few viruses.
Source games isn't optimized for mac OSX yet (if ever, to it's full extension), so I suggest you use bootcamp for the time being. You'll run your games alot faster...
@RugB346 One of the biggest reason why I buy apple products is because of their customer service. The Apple CS here were more than happy not only to return the iMac back at their cost but also offer me discounts for the i7. :-)
Wow, you sound like a pussy. But that would make sense if you own a Mac. Nigger-loving Jewish faggot. HEIL HITLER! KILL FUCKING NIGGERS AND KIKES! TO THE GAS CHAMBERS!
If you own a Mac, that makes you a nigger-fucking cocksucker. Go get a nigger to stick his black nigga dick in your asshole and pump you full of faggot cum.
@azurescens420 Lol I love how constructive some people's comments are. Read what you just said and think about who it really is that you are making look bad...
i have had this happen on my 21.5 but i just make the screen go into sleep or something and then it would be fixed but that was in the first couple days but now it does not do it any more
@toontownkid12 Apple is pretty good with their customer support...they MIGHT allow you to return it if you are nice but persistant and make note of the fact that it is a wide-known problem and that you did not spend thousands of dollars for a defective machine; you are a dissatisfied customer.
If you are within the 14 day period however, they will return it with no questions asked. Hope this helped :-).

The iMacs ATI video card is literally cooking inside a poorly ventilated case and screen flicker is the result. ATI video cards notoriously run hot even in a well ventilated case. To say ATI's need extra ventilation is an understatement.
@miked826 That is not true I tested that idea today I promise you that its not heat related we took some apart today and kept it to 60C and it was still doing it new out of the box. and its not power related as well.
@derekstech Maybe you should google "ati 4850 flicker overheat" and tell those people that it's not the heat causing their flickering machines as well? LOL
LMAO I don't own an ATI card so how could I be wrong. You need to tell the dozens of people that do on google that they are all wrong. You are an idiot if you run a test Outside the iMac case or with the case open to fresh air and say, " nope, it's not heat related". Brilliant.
@derekstech Maybe you should google "ati 4850 flicker overheat" and tell those people that it's not the heat causing their flickering machines as well? lol
I've gotten that same exact problem twice since I got the iMac on 12/10/2009. It only happened twice: once while I was changing wallpapers, and once while I was browsing through files. I also have not found any posts/discussions on this particular issue. However, I remember having this type of problem on my previous PC's, and I am pretty certain that this type of problem is most likely due to a video card driver issue, or the video card itself. Hopefully a fix for this is coming.
I think the i7 10% real world performance increase over the i5 is not worth it. I think the i7 is Apples way of making a few more extra bucks ($200) off of us suckers who just can't help ourselves. Remember the i5 is already a high performance computer. It's nearly 2X as fast as the a their dual core imacs. A quad core is more than enough for about 97% of customers needs, I really don't see how an extra 10% boost in CPU speed is a benifit to anybody...well except maybe apple.
So then why not get an i7 in the first place. Two cons for going the other way. First, you wil have to spend the time from now till the time you get the i7 chip to upgrade with a slower processor. Secondly, you will void the warranty if you decide to upgrade it yourself.
One of the biggest reasons why I buy apple products if because of their Customer Service. It is unbeatable. It is always a great experience going into an apple store with a problem and them fixing it within minutes :-)
Upgrade cost - Right now I can buy an i7 chip, on top of having an i5 iMac for what they'd charge me to toss away the i5 and plug in i7
Warranty - I can purchase an i7 when the machine is out of warranty, for peanuts, and plug in then
Slower Chip - i5, in almost any case, is going to perform very close to the i7
Customer Serv - You can't return an i7 iMac to the store if there's a defect, but you can with an i5. That's a huge plus. I can not accept the downtime of waiting for a new machine.
The i7 option, at least in Canada, was not worth it to me. Apple wanted, with tax, 250 dollars to upgrade the chip. What's funny about that is you can purchase an i7 chip for just a few dollars more than that. So for now, I stick with the i5, and upgrade the board next year. Besides, the i5 represents about 90% of the i7 potential, and allows easy store exchange.
Actually I purchase my stuff directly from an apple sales rep who offers me as much discount as he possibly can. He sold me the Core i7 for $2100.08 before taxes as opposed to $2319.00. So to me, the upgrade is mere $140ish dollars which is why i upgraded. Surely if it were $240...i would have kept the i5.
The i5 is pretty fast but you should always buy the best the you can afford. I could barely afford the i5 but i didnt want to regret not going i7.
Black Friday Sale...perfect time to buy the new i7 :-). The return for the full refund has already been filed but I buy all my stuff from an Apple Sales Rep who gives me great discounts.
Nope...your comment would only make sense if Apple screwed me over on purpose.
I'm upgrading because the i7 is worth the upgrade over the i5...especially with the black friday/thanksgiving sale coming up, NOT because i enjoy a defective machine from Apple :-P
Looks like a graphics card problem. If you look on the apple support forum a few other people are having this problem. It seems the i7 version also suffers from this problem. No one knows if its hardware or software related yet though.
you're right but they pride their entire brand and those stupid unfunny adverts on their 'reliability'. i couldnt justify paying through the nose for that level of phoney image. still for editing, u can beat 'em
You need a new one

I could barely afford the i5 but i didnt want to regret not going i7.

i PURPOSEFULLY bought the i5 as it's not custom order and I can swap in-store if there is any issue. Never buy custom order.

I know what you mean I got a build to order 24" 3.06 with 8800GS and it take so long to get them fixed :( I still want an i7 over the i5 though.

Black Friday Sale...perfect time to buy the new i7 :-). The return for the full refund has already been filed but I buy all my stuff from an Apple Sales Rep who gives me great discounts.

apple screwed me over.. so im'a upgrade to a more expensive one? seriously?
GreenGiantEly 2 years ago
Nope...your comment would only make sense if Apple screwed me over on purpose.
I'm upgrading because the i7 is worth the upgrade over the i5...especially with the black friday/thanksgiving sale coming up, NOT because i enjoy a defective machine from Apple :-P

Take it back.

Looks like a graphics card problem. If you look on the apple support forum a few other people are having this problem. It seems the i7 version also suffers from this problem. No one knows if its hardware or software related yet though.

The screen problems that I can see on the forums are screen flickering problems. You can find videos on this; it is not the same problem as I have.
I have tried to look for forums where this problem is discussed. If you come across any, please post them here. Thanks!

you're right but they pride their entire brand and those stupid unfunny adverts on their 'reliability'. i couldnt justify paying through the nose for that level of phoney image. still for editing, u can beat 'em
