true, sampras will win if both are at there prime, simply because sampras will SERVE like a GOD, unstoppable, but if u saying anything else, i like fed coz of wat he brings to tennis.......more variety and shots,
i dun get this, i thought less bouncy surfaces were suppose to make games quicker because it was more difficult to retrieve the balls? isnt that why its so hard to serve and volley in roland garros? and now you're saying the game has slowed down because the smash did not bounce as high?
Sampras is the best ever. Federer is super talented, but Pete had the best service, volley, slam dunk and running forehand of all the times. Roger doesn´t have one best skill in the history of tennis unlike Pete.
I am a Pete fan, but Roger has the best transition game ever and movement. With that said Pete is his prime would win. Serve too huge, running forehand, and constant attack.
I disagree. I think Roger in his prime is better than Agassi in his prime, and if Agassi could beat Pete, Federer could, too. And as well as Sampras hits his running forehand, Federer does it at least as well, and can put it down the line more consistently than Sampras.
Well he is getting older, his shots (especially his backhand) isnt as reliable. But 2008 was a particularly bad year by his standards, he was behind the ball all the time since he got Mononucleosis.
Federer is clearly better now, but in his prime (around 1996) Sampras was amazing! Also, throughout his career, Sampras had great competition (Courier, Chang, Martin, Rafter, and Agassi)- both pushing him and negating him from acquiring more Slams. Who was Federer's competition (Andy "I need a backhand" Roddick and Lleyton "C'mon Mate" Hewitt)? Now, that Djokovic and Nadal are on the scene I doubt that Roger will be as domineering.
It's impossible to compare Federer to Sampras, given the age difference, and one match does not a rivalry make. If you're interested in seeing what "The Pistol" looked like in his prime, type in "Sampras 96" above and hit "SEARCH". You'll be amazed. And, don't even get me started about Agassi. That Andre could make it to the US Open final at 35 and come close to taking 2 sets from Federer speaks volumes about the strength of the mens game.
Not to beat this thing to death, but the player who retires with the most slams doesn't necessarily make that person "The Best Ever." Going back to a prior comment, Sampras had great competition during his heyday. By comparison, Federer's competition - prior to the emergence of Nole - has been relatively light (Nadal has yet to prove himself on fast courts, Agassi's skills had significantly eroded, Safin is constanly "MIA", Roddick is too one dimensional, as is Hewitt, and on and on and on).
"Agassi was older than Sampras by 5 or 6 years" WTF? Agassi was older than Sampras by less than one year. Wanna know how I know? They played each other when Samp. was 6 and Agassi was 7. Federer beat Sampras when he was barely a few weeks away from 20 and when Sampras was barely a few weeks away from 30 on "Legends of Wimbledon: Pete Sampras" Pete says " That match was the beginning of the end for me. I was 30 then and retirement was on the horizon". thethreeAFZss you need to do your research!
federer beat sampras in the 4rth round of wimbledon 76, 57, 64, 67, 75. federer never won wimbledon until 2003. goran ivanisevic won 2001 wimbledon against rafter.
He never beat him in the Wimbledon final, it was the 4th round. And Sampras had lost a step. Sampras lost to no name George Bastl in the 2nd round the next year, who's highest ranking was 71 lol and has never won a singles title in his career.
Djokovic is so one dimensional. I like Murray only because he reminds me of Miloslav Mecir - Mecir is better than Murray. At best, Djokovic will be the Jim Courier of his time. Obviously, Federer is amazing. I just hate the way tennis is evolving. Tall two handed baseline slamming goons.
I don't think so, if Roger is any better than Pete, it's not by much. They're about even, Pete is just rusty, think about coming out of the ATP for a few years, nearly a decade, and then coming back in to play the current world's number 1, I'd say if you took that into consideration, and Sampras's age, you've got a pretty even match there. Don't get me wrong, I love Federer, he is definately a tennis legend.
You're talking to a huge Sampras fan. Hey, when McEnroe was number one, everybody was saying that he was the best ever. When Pete was at the top of his game (around 1996), eveyone was saying the same thing. Now it's Roger. Guess what? If Roger plays into his thirties, a lot more people will beat him (with a lot more ease) and then the public will jump on another band wagon.
Federer is the all time great... No doubt about that.. But it is really amazing to see Sampras' performance at age of 36 and that too after such a long break... very impressive.
I also think roddick is over-rated.......it seems to me he was better when he first got on the scene, not just the serve, because i think players just learned to deal with it,but his groundies were much more impressive.
Yes he was definitly better when he first came on the scene, hes play style was much more aggressive then it is now. He takes less chances which is costing him alot.
Who can say who's best? Agassi & Sampras praise Federer & expect big things. It's hard 2 judge his true worth cuz of a lack of competition. Look at all da ppl Sampras had 2 go through! Federer's better than Sampras NOW but only met once when Sampras was actively playing. Who knows what would've happened if they met again?
I'd like 2 add if Roddick learned to place serve like Sampras at 155mph who could get a serve like that?
Roddick shouldn't even be said in the same paragrah as Agassi, Sampras, or Federer in regard to playing tennis. The only thing that he has in common with any of those players is that he's American. Roddick sucks and is washed up. He'll be lucky if he's in the top ten next year.
That's a lil harsh isnt it? Dont discount him yet. He still has a chance... mayb. This yr he did pretty well. He's been doing well in the Davis Cup at least. Mayb 2008 will b his yr... mayb.
uhhh...roddick sucks. take that to the bank. he would've been great in the roscoe tanner era (lol) but his game doesn't have enough complexity. one thing for sure, sampras has the best 1st/2nd serve combo in the history of the game.
It's funny that I seem 2 b defending Roddick wen I think he needs an overhaul on his game 2 but I dont feel rite not givin him a chance to prove himself.
there's no doubt in my mind it wouldve been interesting had sampras stayed a lil longer.
that's why pete should have stayed on tour ate least 4 more years. then Federer would have some real competition (except Nadal on clay). And yeah maybe Federer would have won again, but Sampras would also have won agaisnt him for sure... and this not to mention that Agassi would still come up between them and give them both a real fight for the slams and TMCs
Who can say whether Federer was serious or not? Mayb at 1st but u can c da more Sampras attacked the more serious Federer got. It's only a matter of time b4 Sampras won 1. 4 sum1 who retired 5yrs ago he made it competitive. I think he did better than people on the tour now. ppl who think Sampras is boring aren't hardcore fans. ppl 2day want 2 c longer rallies & watnot. Sampras attacks nonstop 2 either get a winner or force an error. That's an ideal way 2 play & ain't easy!
no suprise that sampras can still go, the man is a legend. no wonder he was thinking of coming back to play wimbledon last season, he would of gone far im sure.
if pete sampras was still same age as federer, pete would be probably the curretnt #1 player of tennis and federer is #2...because, listen to all interview of federer and sampras. During federer's interview, he said "people you know pete was THE ONLY one of my idol when i was still at college"
Not sure if a pro coach could back this up but I see some similarities in their serves.. Still think Sampras' serve has got to be one of the most fluid and awesome serves of all time.. Amazing how Sampras has some pop in his serve..
It's kinda ironic that even though Sampras is hairiest nab on the planet, he can't grow hair where he requires it most .....ON HIS HEAD. He'll be wearing a wig at this rate.
Exactly. Thats why Federer can return his serves right at his feet with a flick of his hand. He can predict the serves, because they lack placement. I hope Roddick doesen't read this and get any ideas...
pete is still great but he had to retire because his body was breaking down if the season was only six months long pete would still be in the top three
Why did Sampras quit when he can still give Federer a run for his money? I still think he's capable of getting halfway through Wimbledon and possibly getting to the latter stages of small grass tournaments...
all i can say is: sampras was a jackass to quit so early, he could have hung on for at least 4 more years (like agassi did). His serve is only rivalled by roddick's, for example...
and yes, Federer is playing very differently (and better) than TMC...
Having only a good serve doesn't mean shit. Look at Roddick. He's getting the shit owned out of him because he can't get the balls and has nothing but a good serve and a few good shots off the forehand. Agassi stayed because he wanted to raise the level of the game to compete with him, because he's the first player to hit hard off the rise.
...i was pointing the serve as an EXAMPLE, and Roddick was also an example, I have been watching tennis long enough to know he's getting owned. And yes I also know how Agassi plays like, but still, given the shape Pete's in, he could very well and without doubt hung on another 4 years. And don't compare Agassi to Pete in terms of playing style... don't be a jackass and please go watch some more tennis before you come here acting like a smart-ass
I'm amazed how well within the baseline Sampras is when receiving Federer's serve. Also it will be a long time before we see a classic serve and volleyer in action. Good luck Sampras!
And feafeof, fuck yourself. Sampras still did this well, didn't take a stab at most volleys, and is a decade older than him. At the same age he'd either win or make it 3 straight tiebreakers at least. Sampras didn't chase so many balls down, and Federer is playing in a way where he would kill everybody he played in the Tennis Master's Cup easily. Federer doesn't serve and volley because he doesn't have to. Sampras forced him to, even if it was an exhibition.
Many thanks for the post philmandud. 26 Slams and counting out on that court - never happened before - Awesome! Of course Sampras is past his prime and of course Federer isn't in a ruthless mindset, but who cares. Enjoy the Macau trip you lucky so and so.
