Is it just me, or does it seem like all the "power" drummers out there (the ones I look up to) sit fairly low. Maybe not as much finesse as other players, but they just seem to have so much more power from that low center of gravity.
the black oak arkansas solo is 36 yrs before this solo. How the hell does he manage to keep all the hair after all these years!!!!! i am baffled about this man....is he human??? he really is the best though,,, no one touches this solo!!
Tommy was absolutey amazing at Drum Daze in '09. I agree with the comments about his age and it hasn't slowed him down. I got to talk with him briefly and he a very nice and humble dude. And no he doesn't play Sonor exclusively. He's been with Yamaha for years. I also discussed a ton of sh*t about him w/ the Yammie rep.
"Tommy hasn't changed his solo in 35 years"...well, he's in good company, isn't he? Take Neil Peart's cowbell tree away from him...Carl Palmer's gong(s)...these guys have stuck with What Works, too. Each of them found something unique for their respective solos, separating them from the herd!
Yeh at around 1:22 I saw that. Professional. He aught to put that into his act. Also, I wonder who the **** set up his set! His drum tech's must worry about their job the way he kicks the crap out of the set. But the stuff was not tightened properly and made Yamaha look bad maybe.
Interesting how he has played basically the same solo he has done since the 1970s with Black Oak Arkansas on the song Up. The older he gets the better he sounds. Amazing, best ever.
My guitarist friend asked Tommy at a long-ago clinic what he felt was his weakness as a musician. He answered honestly and said he wished he had learned to read music. There are certainly many educated drummers that will never have his energy or perpetual motion behind the kit!
Oh, and that recovery was flawless. Not a lot of dudes could pull that off.

He's got some of Bonham's skills too (as in John) with playing on the kit with his hands (no sticks) just like Moby Dick!

Fucking nice recovery! Tommy was one of my main drumming influences in the 80s. Black Oak, Ozzy, White Snake...A truly cool cat too.

He may play the same basic drum solo over and over throughout his career, but it always sounds like the hammer of the gods when he plays!
