I've watched this video so many times. Phantom Regiment will always be better than their competition to me. 2011 was no exception, though they didn't get the credit they deserved, the crowd says it all. The entire point of DCI, it's entire meaning is to perform for, as well as, evoke the emotions and excitement to the crowd. Everyone knows why this show was so great, the proof lies in my skin everytime i see this. Never has any show given me consistant goosebumps after each and every viewing.
Can someone tell me how many members are in each of the brass sections now? I marched '99 and I think we only had 70, but it appears that they are at 80 now, is that correct? Of course, we also marched with G bugles...times change...
@IAMQUICKS it looks like something our girls called "the Jesus throw", but A) I don't think that's the actual name (not too PC), and B) it looks slightly different.
@71196jmg 3. Ever single piece (with the exception of "A Time For Us") was classical music. Mozart, Verdi, Wagner, Prokofiev, Holdridge. Doesn't get much more classical than that. 4. If there is another way to tell the story of Romeo and Juliet without hornline/colorguard interaction with an all female colorguard, then maybe you should be writing/choreographing drill and not commenting on youtube.
So many people commenting that know nothing of the show. 1. East of Eden is used because its portraying the sheer beauty and innocence on Juliet. Has nothing to do with "where the piece is from". 2. Elsa's (besides being a gorgeous piece and Regiment's corps song) is symbolic of Elsa's (Juliet's) procession to death and if you watch, Juliet has a procession all the way from backfield where she at last ends on the podium (which you might even think is symbolic to Elsa's cathedral).
@24mandr yeah unfortunately in the DVD they used the semifinals shot of Juliet at the end. She alluded to stabbing herself every show until Finals where she actually did it. To bad DCI missed the shot
Probably one of my favorite shows in the history of DCI. It was evident when you saw finals that Phantom's show was placed where it ought to be since the top four corps had incredible shows as well. The difference about Phantom's show is that it is just beautiful and the emotional level that it connects with is outstanding. It just kind of sticks with you. This show actually made it so that Phantom replaced Cadets as my favorite corps (in a year that the Cadets one mind that)
Elsa's fit because the show was only abstractly about "Romeo and Juliet." It was really about doomed romances (Lohengrin ends with Elsa dying of despair after Lohengrin ascends to heaven; mind you, I still don't know what East of Eden was doing there). My only problem with the show was that the drill was not up to par with the corps ahead of PR Also, the drum line was obviously still adjusting to the new staff. If they'd done this show in 2010, I think it would have been a contender.
Turandot next year, so it should be a massive improvement. I can't wait to see it! I personally loved Elsa, though I agree that it was a bit out of place, though they made it work
I wish there was a more clear story line to this show. I also think the interactions with the guard and the corp are very cheesy, very cliche. Loving the brass though, and the visual package from upstairs is well thought out and very pleasing overall.
This was good, I didn't like their show that much, i just didnt think it was exceptionally well written. Elsa was good, but out of place for a show about romeo and juliet. I was disappointed they didnt use more themes from the prokofiev ballet. I mean, they are 'DCI's classical music playing corps' anyways.
If they had a caption award for most expendable drum major, Phantom Regiment would win.
