I loved this show growing up as a kid in the 70's. What boy didn't want to be part of S.W.A.T. then. They were cool. Miss seeing shows like this on television. Take me back to the 70's, man!
I love this show and I just love this theme one of my all time tv themes I cannot get enough of it!!!! Great music for cruising in the car too turn it up!!!
S.W.A.T is one of my all time favorites i liked since i was small and i remember my uncle GABRIEL CASTILLO RIVAS who died in july 29 1987, god bless INTERNET
S.W.A.T is one of my all time favorites i liked since i was small and i still do i've been looking for this ever since i first heard it i want them to brig it back, i loved the tv show and i always will
The opening theme is awesome with it's "chicka-wacka, chicka-wacka"guitar! Just like the theme from "Shaft"! Made me buy a wah-wah pedal for my guitar!
Wow , one of the best TV series of all times, it's a pity it only lasted one season and I read that it was cancelled (even having a huge ratings success) because it was "too violent for the people to watch" at that time..if that is true, I think it's ridiculous! Btw, it seems like all of us who watched S.W.A.T played games pretending to be some of the characters.
@63tennesseeflower Yes, I agree.. ;-D but the only thing that could happen, is that the new version lose the essence and soul of the original one (as we've recently have seen on new versions like The Bionic Woman, Knight Ryder and V) because writers and producers always try to "update" the versions to these present days but they end up screwing them. If they bring back S.W.A.T let's hope they don't make the same mistake
When I was in the police academy, an instructor was making light jokes of the guy who dove through the glass window on this opening, and Heather Locklear throwing the baton at the fleeing suspect on TJ Hooker's opening.
When I was a police officer and was then on a TRT (SWAT), I always played this music in my head when we deployed. But then again, I would run "Everybody was Kung-Fu Fighting during Defensive Tactics classes.
Man, I don't know a boy who was under the age of 18 that didnt love this show when it came out. We used to play "SWAT" all the time. I'm African American so I always had to play "Deke". Damn, nothin against Deke but i wanted to be Street or Luka once in a while.
Is it just me, or does anyone else think these epic theme songs make for awesome listening music? I'll just slap a bunch of these on sometimes and crank it loud...awesome scores, fantastic music...doubt any of my friends have cranked the S.W.A.T. theme lately or even know how it sounds. Their loss!!! :)
@jenzeppelin Yeah, I do. Actually, this was released as a full length instrumental sort of disco tune back when the show came out. I remember hearing it on top 40 stations at the time.
We were five boys a within four years of each other (twins). My younger brother and I would fight over which character we'd be. Of course since we we're black we both wanted to be Deke (Rod Perry). Next cool one was T.J. cause he had the scope rifle. Funny, but good times.
I was in High School when this came out! God, Time flies!! Does anyone remember a comedy hospital show called "Temperatures Rising?" I used to watch that too...
We used to watch this as a family. Us kids especially loved "the theme song" We could't wait.
Come to think of it we played board games together, ate dinner at the table, and actually talked to each other...go figure. Now the world is designed to seperate everyone and have us living in our own world (pods) where we don't need anyone...It's sad. I just miss having a conversation with someone instead of joining them in "cyber space"
The world has really changed, and not for the better.
It´s a great tv serie! I love Robert Urich, Mark Shera , Rod Perry , Steve Forrest and James Coleman. They were very good actors and this serie was really the best for all us during our childhood and teenager times
Impresionante, en su momento era lo mas avanzado y ahora que pasó el tiempo entre lo despojado de los uniformes y la camioneta de Bimbo parece que fueran de un servicio de vigilancia del conurbano.
S.W.A.T. (the real team) was created as the result of the notorious shootout between the S.L.A. gang and the LAPD in Los Angeles in 1974; back then, law enforcers weren't prepared for such urban incident, similliar to the North Hollywood BOA shootout in 1997.
The interesting thing was: the driver never saw any action! Was he just sitting in the van all day long waiting for Hondo and the boys to jump in? A BIG waste of taxpayer money if you ask me! LOL!
Although I´m a girl I loved this tv series and felt shivers up and down my spine whenever the theme song started playing . Hondo was my favorite in the SWAT team , he was so sexy and handsome ... Right after him came Robert Ulrich who was also gorgeous , I can´t believe he passed away ! The other guys were Very cute as well ! Too bad there no episodes uploaded on Youtube , I really loved the original 1976 SWAT ...
I remember Hondo always telling T.J. to "Take theShot!" I would get a kick out of my nephews playing SWAT with their toy plastic M-16s. The youngest broke his arm trying to do the -dive through the window- move. One of them even had the toy bolt action rifle that he taped a cardboard toilet paper tube to. LOL. Great 70's fun!!
Man, this show was WAY before its time! It was canned after over a season which totally SUCKED! Compared to today's cop shows, this was a cartoon. S&H was just as violent and it lasted four seasons. It was good to see S.W.A.T. make it to the silver screen in recent years. Mom would tell me stories about those shows form the 70s.
To quote wrodjr: "Ah! memories..." sweet ones at best!
Yes, there were many, as I, like you, grew up during that time frame. I remember Adam-12, CHiPs, Baretta, The Rookies, Hawaii 5-0, Police Woman, Charles Angels, Police Story, Cannon, Quincy (although Jack Klugman didn't play a cop/detective) and a boat load of others.
@MB412 the six million dollar man, the bionic woman, wonderwoman. not necessarily cop shows, but mysteries. i miss real tv, where people actually came up with ideas.
i remember the tv episode called war jungle starred cameron mitchell ,it has been titled : The day buck cannon met Dan Hondo harrelson and his crew hahahahhaahahha
I've finally come to the conclusion that the SWAT theme is the second funkiest tv theme ever (the first being The White Shadow). I love how the theme starts with the funky, groovy bassline, and then you get hit with the horns... and throughout you got the "wocka wocka" from the guitars. I would love this to play every time I walked into a room- instant respect!
So do I. I have a young student who is obsessed with SWAT policemen and I told him about when I was young that there was a show about them called SWAT. I just showed him this vid. to give him an idea about what the show was like and he loved it. I remember playing SWAT with all my friends in the 70s. We had lots of fun doing jumps and shoulder rolls.
@Dracman I thought this show was good but Starsky and Hutchwas a bit more my favorite theme behind Hawaii five-0 and then this 1 is after Starsky and hutch for me
I had this tune playing in my head when I was running the obstacle course while on National guard duty. I wished I could of ran through a window with my M-16.
Wahaha...I rember Rhythm Heritage did an LP of this song! I made a cassette of it and then my friend and I had SUCH fun playing it in my Torino. It had worn out tires and then at the end I'd stomp on the brakes and SCREEECH the tires at the right spot, LOL...
Too true -- I had forgotten that Robert Urich, Rod Perry and James Coleman were in this show. Always LOVED that freeze-frame of JC jumping off the roof with his rifle over is head. But seriously, the only faces you can see clearly are SF and MS -- who, I agree was a stone fox, but they all were. Had the term "beefcake" been coined then?
I remember watching this show a handful of times when it was in primetime. Me and my brother loved it and played SWAT with our friends. When I got old and watched the show in reruns, I didn't seem that great of a show. It seemed very boring.
Rhythm Heritages Hit Version of the theme tune was not only a Top 10 hit back in the day, it was a #1 Hit - the second TV Theme who topped the charts (the 1st one was The Sound Of Philadelphia "TSOP" from MFSB, The Theme from Soul Train). It WAS btw composed by Barry DeVorzon - his name as composer is not only in every episodes credits, the name also shows up as composer for the theme on Rhythm Heritages hit single! So much for some false information from some jamessomething82!....
I always thought Urich's freeze frame coming over the fence was the coolest.
Seriously, I read a lot of terms like "simplistic" concering shows of the 70s. Well back then, things were pretty much black and white (metaphorically speaking). You had the good guys and the bad guys. With today's shows, you get a cynical group of touchy feely wonks who so PC they wind up not doing anything but drinking a frapachino and doing group hugs.
I must be one of the few people on Earth who really never cared for that theme music. Even as a very young child I always thought it was a bit corny and simplistic.
Alright, the music has apparently got the testosterone going. calm down boys, the show was 30+ years ago, and you're acting like the kids we were then. I remember playing this stuff out in the streets of Philly with my friends at the time. We all were fighting over who would be "Hondo". wow Good time ey?
Rod Perry tried his hand in some blxploitation back then...Black Godfather I think. What's worse than him jumping throught the window was that his gun and credit block his face in a biz where your looks are everything.
You know, there was a group called Rythmn Heritage who had a top ten hit with this theme song in either 1975 or 1976, even though Barry DeVorzon originally composed the theme.
This TV series was called "los hombres de Harrelson", the translation would be something like "Harrelson's men" in Spain. Great vid.

You are right and had to agreed with you. You should have see him on Barnaby Jones.

I remember playing this theme in jr. high school band. or maybe it was high school. it was a popular band song then.. late 70s/early 80s.
Aerick2281 2 years ago
We played it too. And we seriously thought we were badass for doing it.

I remember watching this show a handful of times when it was in primetime. Me and my brother loved it and played SWAT with our friends. When I got old and watched the show in reruns, I didn't seem that great of a show. It seemed very boring.

I don`t think they ever showed who waited and drove the van. It looks like someone is in a police uniform.

I remember the action figures too. Good times!

Those were good ole days when you were 10 years old, and you and your friends were acting like you were on the swat team. Those were fun times.

TV show intros just don't any better that this.
Today networks balk at a 10 sec intro.

Name of the song, please?? thanks.

Lalo Schifrin DID NOT compose the theme to S.W.A.T.!! Watch any episode and see the credits.
stlramsfan21 3 years ago
@stlramsfan21 You are correct, Barry DeVorzon did compose the theme to S.W.A.T.
He is also best known for composing Nadia's Theme-The Theme to The Young and the Restless as well as the CBS Detective/Mystery Series Simon & Simon
tnawcwvictoria 1 year ago
Barry DeVorzon didn't compose the theme, Lalo Schifrin did.

The Fall Guy, Hardcastle n McCormick,Miami Vice, Six Million Dollar Man. These are the other best TV intro's I could think of.

Why the black guy had to jump through the window?
2199 4 years ago
Might be to draw some excitement. :-?
Scarletspeedster68 4 years ago
still in all that was the best part of the opening credits. Would this be a cool remake in todays market?
2199 4 years ago
Rod Perry tried his hand in some blxploitation back then...Black Godfather I think. What's worse than him jumping throught the window was that his gun and credit block his face in a biz where your looks are everything.
shirazhound 3 years ago
You know, there was a group called Rythmn Heritage who had a top ten hit with this theme song in either 1975 or 1976, even though Barry DeVorzon originally composed the theme.
Scarletspeedster68 4 years ago 2
... I mean James Coleman. My bad.
stlramsfan21 4 years ago
Classic theme- One of the top five TV themes of all time. How about jerry Coleman in mid-air during opening credits?
Mike7681- Couldn't agree more with your assessment!!
stlramsfan21 4 years ago
That's not Jerry Coleman. That's James Coleman.
Scarletspeedster68 4 years ago

Anyone else recognize that the beginning of the theme was interpolated (sp?) by LL Cool J's "I'm Bad?"
