I live in the UK and keep seeing references to whipped topping, is it whipped cream? also what is the white chocolate mix, is it our equivalent of Angel Delight? sorry for all the questions.
@wirralsam Whipped topping is sweetened whipped cream. You can just whip some cream until it is stiff, then add sweetener (I use icing sugar) to taste. The white chocolate mix is mixed with milk to make pudding--which is white chocolate flavored.
made this for a friend who is absolutely mad for oreos (instead of gummy worms we put in those mini oreos) put it in the freezer and turned it out it looked great!! was just like a giant stack of oreos, she was so thrilled! thank you for sharing this!!!
@xhm100 It sounds great with the mini Oreos! The gummy worms were for my grandson Carter's benefit, but you can make this into a great dessert for adults.
Definitely gonna try this recipe out! :) I was wondering if it was okay to put this in the freezer and have it sliced? I was also wondering why some people make dirt cake with the cream cheese, butter, etc. and why others don't.
@linlovesyou1 Yes, you may freeze it, but be sure to serve it frozen or only slightly thawed; otherwise, it will be watery. This dirt cake just uses the Oreo cookie layer with pudding and whipped cream, and the taste is great and it is light and fluffy. You may add cream cheese or butter, but it just makes it heavier, and I don't think it adds that much to the flavor.
the gummy worms look yummy.....yor grandson is the cutest button i have ever seen..pls check my videos .......write down mvlily2308 and the 4 videos will cum.....please check them...pls

@azianstothetop I love that about it, too! It goes together fast, and you can choose what flavor of pudding to add, leave out the gummy creatures, and customize it to your liking! Thanks for your lovely comment!
@angelsparkle8 wow no need to get an attitude with someone .. i was just saying my mom is 53 has 6 children and doesnt look like she should be a grandma either .. geez jump down someone's throat ..
I know that Carter will grow up to be a great and good looking young man :D I can already see the line of girls behind him :) Betty, you remind me of my grandma so much :D already did this with my neices, they love it! but we substituted worms with gummy bears :D
We make these once a month (sometimes twice) at school (I'm about to be a junior) and sell them in little cups (those party red & blue cups) Everyone loves them :)
I need a piece of advice, I might make this later, and I don't know if it'll come out correct... Can you put extra Oreo's on the sides? My friends will come over and see my desert and collect some home...
Carter is adorable. Thank you and Carter for this wonderful recipe. I know my husband is going to be happy. He always says, "Thank goodness for Betty".
Looks delicious! You're grandson is adorable! And I love how he took his time answering whether or not he liked it! He's going to be a careful decision maker! :D
@RubenRedd I like to think of it as Oreo Cake--but the dirt cake version would be better with dark chocolate pudding, which will make the white mixture change to a muddy color.
Hi betty, I tried this out and it was delicious and fun! :) I was wondering, I have tons of jam and I don't know what to do with it... do you have any recipes that require jam?
@nikiandkinda I have a dagwood-style sandwich and a turkey brie sandwich that could jam as a spread. You can use jam as layers in a trifle. I have a trifle with fruit, pudding, and whipped cream layers--you could add layers of jam.
Say, this is A LOT better than watching the Andy Griffith show! And it's one of my absolute favorites!! Thanks, Betty, for your recipes and easy how to instructions. They've been a HUGE blessing to my mother and I. I made your corned beef recipe this week and we both wondered how we ever got on without it, before. It will probably become a staple in our household. :-)
I have seen many versions done as well but the most unappealing was done in a cat litter pan. The top layer was done with an oatmeal cookie for the texture and tootsie rolls were shaped into well I don't need to explain. It was presented complete with a litter scooper. Needless to say it was not touched at the pot luck lunch...LOL LOL LOL
i was so excited to see this in my sub box, lol! i love dirt cake. i do a variation on this for halloween, but i form the "dirt" into a graveyard and use molano cookies as headstones with the worms peeking out of the graves. i've also put it in a flower pot before with a stem of fake flowers sticking out and used a little shovel to serve it with. it's always a big hit and i love to make it. thanks for an amazing upload, betty.... it's always fun to see u in the kitchen with carter! =)
Carter had me nervous with his "delayed" reaction to the taste of this cake!LOL I will have to make this for and with my 4 yr. old son. He loves cookies and gummies so this is a great treat!

@Ladylasil Yes, with the cream cheese in it, it does taste more like cheesecake. It has a very interesting flavor--but you can change lots of things about it!
Do try this version as the combo of butter and cream cheese is soooo good. I have made like this except ending with the oreo on top so the worms look like they are on top of the dirt, as they would be the ground.
hahaha Carter is really cute and you are so sweet grandmom. I always enjoy watching your cooking recipe, though this is the first time official hello. :D
Also this is a very rich recipe...so I've always used the reduced fat oreos, skipped the butter, a little sweetened condensed milk, pudding , powdered sugar
I love dirt cake. I remember my mama making it for the first time when we kids. The flower was in the middle of the kitchen table and finally she asked "Are you kids ready for dessert?". When she starting scooping out the "soil" we thought Mama has surely lost her mind. hahaha Such a good recipe though. You bring back good memories Ms. Betty.
Don't you just love all the "help" we get in the kitchen from our grandkids? I really love the mess, and all the laughs, but the best part is when they go home, and we get to clean up! lol
