Firstly, "tranny" can be used affectionately, much like "fag". It is not offensive to all trans people, especially not in all contexts, and no one speaks for all trans people. @junipermama1 Except that despite his sometimes insensitive phrasing, he has always treated trans people with equal respect, and the "tokens" that you speak of are a hell of a lot more than what a lot of other high-profile gay and lesbian activists do for the B or T parts of LGBT. As someone both bi and trans, and who has listened to and read Dan Savage for years, he is sometimes insensitive about his phrasing when speaking about bisexual and trans-related issues. Firstly, "tranny" can be used affectionately, much like "fag". It is not offensive to all trans people, especially not in all contexts, and no one speaks for all trans people. Secondly, he was using that and "shemale" to describe a particular genre of pornography--NOT trans people, but the genre itself. Thirdly, he was not referring to trans people as freaks; he was referring to the straight male into that porn and anal play as "freaky", which he uses in exactly the same POSITIVE way as "kinky".

@monicron Yeah, trans people can use "tranny" affectionately (I use it) IF YOU'RE ALREADY A PART OF THE TRANS-POSITIVE COMMUNITY. You don't get to use the words "faggot" or "dyke" if you're a homophobe, and you don't get to use "tranny" if you're a transphobe. If he'd established himself as part of the trans-positive queer community before making those statements, it would be entirely different.

@junipermama1 Except that despite his sometimes insensitive phrasing, he has always treated trans people with equal respect, and the "tokens" that you speak of are a hell of a lot more than what a lot of other high-profile gay and lesbian activists do for the B or T parts of LGBT. I personally view him as enough a part of the "community" to not be offended by it, and you may not, but my other point was that he was using it to refer to the genre, not trans people, anyway.

@monicron I can sort of see his excuse for using "shemale" and "tranny" to refer to the genre, but you've got to admit that it was insensitive. I was actually a lot more troubled by the use of "freak" to refer to someone who is attracted to transwomen. Even if it is, as you said, analogous to the positive use of "kinky," why is attraction to transpeople "kinky?" The idea that transpeople are only attractive when they're the object of someone's warped sexual fetish is outright offensive.

@junipermama1 I absolutely do understand why some people would be offended by this, which is why I say that his phrasing can be insensitive. However, I don't think that means he's transphobic, and I would not say that he was saying that it's "freaky" to be attracted to trans women- I find it more offensive to suggest that the porn in question is representative of trans women. That genre is specifically ABOUT fetishizing trans women as "freaks", rather than women who happen not to be cisgendered.

@junipermama1 And, that sort of thing is right in line with fetishizing latex or cuckolding, which I'm pretty comfortable calling "kink". There's also the fact that the majority of hetereosexual males probably don't seek out that type of porn, which means it's "abnormal" in the objective sense of not being the most common, and that doesn't mean you need to give a value judgment to it. That's what "freaky" is supposed to imply--it can be a good, fun thing, it's just different from the mainstream.

@junipermama1 Did you read my other comment before that? I specifically said that this type of pornography is explicitly about fetishizing non-op trans women's bodies as "deviant", NOT that I think trans women's bodies are deviant or should be seen as such. Two very different statements. The point is that this genre of porn is based on a kink, not that being attracted to trans people is a kink--like I said, this stuff treats trans women as something exotic rather than just the women they are.

@monicron Ok, I get what you're saying. I was honestly scared for a second there that you were labeling your own gender as a fetish target, and didn't quite get that you were refering exclusively to the porn genre. I don't think that many people who are genuinely emotionally/romantically attracted to transwomen would be interested in "tranny porn" since it is so explicitly exploitative-- for straight men, it's more of a predatory pursuit of the exotic than an actual orientation-based attraction.

As someone both bi and trans, and who has listened to and read Dan Savage for years, he is sometimes insensitive about his phrasing when speaking about bisexual and trans-related issues. However, while words are important, actions are MORE important, and he absolutely treats bisexual and trans people with equal respect. Junipermama's assertions about his beliefs are incorrect, which anyone can see when listening to his podcasts.

In the early 90's my parents (albeit with slight hesitation) let me go with my best friend and her dad and "uncle" on holiday despite other parents not feeling comfortable enough to do so (without of course saying why). We had a lovely time.
Later, the very teacher I had that year, a straight and highly respected man, was arrested and convicted for pedophilia.
And that's when I knew what this video has just confirmed.

@nikoincroatia It's bigots like him that are the CAUSE of so many bi people being in the closet. I know so many self-identified lesbians who are actually bi, and so many "straight" people who are actually bi, but they don't talk about it to anyone because jerks like Savage assume that it's not a legitimate orientation.
That, or bi people wait until they're in their mid-twenties or later to come out of the closet because no one even takes them seriously if they come out as teens or young adults.

@verysoliy I'm very sorry about your abuse. However, there is no connection between your abuse and your sexual orientation. In fact, it has been suggested that men who abuse boys often target gay kids. This is either because they sense this in the boy and it makes the boy's perceived "weakness" all the more attractive, or also possibly because more gay boys are socially isolated and therefore easier targets. A boy who suspects he might be gay is less likely to tell his parents about the abuse.

Police in several countries have arrested 184 alleged members of a paedophile ring and rescued 230 children in "the biggest case of its kind", Dubbed Operation Rescue, Europol said the probe started three years ago, and targeted an online network, its server based in the Netherlands, with 70,000 members worldwide. It has since been taken down.
The suspects were members of an online forum, boylover.net, that promoted sex between adult men and young boys.
