This is when David was 11 yo. When he was 12 he won the Star Search. Unfortunately when he was competing with the other winners (including mark Mejia), he was sick he had very bad sore throat (which caused one of his vocal cord paralyzed), and Mark Mejia won. But, unfortunately right now we don't hear anything about Mark Mejia. If I'm not mistaken, M. Mejia was 2 years younger than David. So by now he should be 18 years old.

Too bad David was sick when he was competing on Star Search among champions, that's when Mark M. won. I didn't say that Mark M. is better than David. But, Mark was also a good singer when he was a little. If he still has a nice voice right now, why not trying for AI or the Voice?

It was because of this that he "disappeared" for several years, during which he was recovering, and eventually was able to sing again, however he's never re-gained use of the vocal cord that became paralyzed. This is evidenced by his now well known "breathy" or "smokey" tone to his signing voice. The breathy sound is typical for someone that has expirienced vocal paralysis.
