I was 11 years old when Hurricane Andrew struck south Florida. I lived in the area where the eye of the storm passed over; Homestead, FL. I could remember my ears popping at around 3:00am and things hitting our house constantly. The whistling sound of the wind sorta like a runway train. I was laying down on the floor and could see outside the window was dark but I remember the sky suddenly turned green and pink and the wind got stronger, I believe many tornadoes was in that storm!
i served as an MP during this time at Ft. Benning, Ga. remember 5 days after it hit South Dade County, that Pres. Bush gave us orders to head down there. I spent a whole month in this area. from South Miami to Homestead Air Force Base and on both sides of Highway 1. The destruction was unbelieveable.
It's been 18 years now.Further south was worse,i lived in Naranja Lakes in Homestead,We emerged in the morning from a pile of bricks and sticks. No roads,no trees, just a big wet mess everywhere.
Thank you for sharing. I lived in Miami Springs but our first house at Homestead A.F.B. was demolished!! Just grass growing now. Just wonder about if anyone stayed or if the force had it completely shut down??
My dad was retired Navy and I grew up in the 70's & 80's going to HAFB on the weekends (BX, commissary, etc.); dad played a lot of golf there at the course. It was made into an air reserve base after Andrew.
those are sad memories I still remember I love that state my heart is still out there I lived in florida city when that happened I went to west homestead elem. homestead jr & homestead sr. still visit once in a while.
my mom was in that, she was at the top of a concrete building. and when it was over they saw a blade of grass stuck into a cement building. the winds where vicous!
I was watching the show "it could happen tomorrow" where one of the weather guys lived in Perrine. He said that he didn't evacuate because Perrine was not in the evacuation zone. His house was totally destroyed, as were many in his neighborhood. I don't know which neighborhood it was, but the walls of his house fell in and the roof was torn off. He was inside with his 3 young children. His wife and newborn daughter were in the hospital in Miami.
How can it be that Perrine was not in the evacuation zone, yet it is closer to the ocean and only 12 miles from Homestead? I don't understand how it wasn't in the evacuation zone. It doesn't make any sense.
@ultimafuelie I live in what is now Palmetto Bay (156th st and 84th ave) I was 9 yrs old and I clearly remember the police stating we were mandatory evac. To this day my parents say that is the reason behind us leaving.
I agree with Brad, this video brings back powerful memories, something I can never forget...Andrew. It taught me a great respect for hurricanes. I am now a resident of the Houston, TX area, before Ike no one understood my respect for storms, they now understand.
I remember driving down 87th Ave towards 184th Street a few weeks after the Storm in my brand new '93 Mustang GT and I was listening to local news on the radio; a guy commented that officials believed it could take 3-5 years to get all of the Hurricane damage cleaned up and repaired and I remember thinking, "Gees, that'll be 1995-97 before this place is back to normal......" and it left me with a total sense of hopelessness. But we recovered and cleaned up much faster than that.
homestead air force base ground zero i went through the eyewall it was calm during the eye and the winds started to rip the house uo in leisure city 1 mile west from the air force base 288 st and 152 ave
I was living in Perrine off of 99th Ave when Andrew hit. To this day, storms terrify me. I used to work at the restaurant people refer to as "Flamingos," but it was Neighbors in the late 80s.
I grew up on 88th Avenue in the '60s and '70s. We went through a couple hurricanes as well. The house that I grew up in (a block and a half from the new Perrine Elementary School) was heavily damaged during this storm but has since been nicely restored. Thanks for sharing this video of my old neighborhood.
At 2:59 I can see the restaurant that gave me first job as a busboy. You can't tell by the sign obviously but it was called "Flamingo's". Wow, it is cool to see that since I did not work there till after the Hurricane.
Before it was "Flamingo's", it was called the "Ranch House" up into the 1980's; I used to ride my bike with a friend there in the late '70s before going to school at Southwood Jr. High for their "99 Cent" breakfast.
Very cool. Good times. I never new that and I am m surprised no one ever mentioned it since I worked there till I graduated High School. Flamingos had great breakfast too. It was a nice family place on the weekends. I was just there two weeks ago (I live in Virginia now) and I think it is called "Cooper's" looks pretty fancy. Thanks for sharing.
It's hard to believe that the 17 year anniversary of Andrew is just next week. Thats what motivated me to search for videos here. Not that any of us really need them...I know the sound, smell, and sights were burned into my memory when I was 12 years old. This video brings tears to my eyes, especially the footage on US1. I lived on 125th street and 87th ave. Madness!
I also grew up in the area, around 82 ave/184 st. I remember being able to see Burger King Corp from our roof similar to your video. Brought back a flood of memories for sure. My folks still live there, still the best area in South FLA.
Gret video-I lived on e lake at us1 and sw 14oth street-just west of one - i couldn't even recognise my neighborhood after- your shots at 9:50 am are great-you can still see the back end of the hurricane to the west-yet the wind is way down almost nothing-remember it really dried up fast-the flooding went down in a day-i will post soon a vid I took at my house at e lake and the drive to tamimai airport on 16oth street past the zoo and country walk-the airport is in total shambles.
damn, as yall were riding north on US-1 i had no idea all those places were there back then, the burger king, south motors bmw, the hess gas station, it looks so different back then versus now, but still kinda looks the same i stayed right on the other side of us-1 in the perrine area and we got the same kind of damage, i would have never known that was pinecrest until you showed perrine elem. wow man, great video, brings back alot of memories.
Perrine, Cutler Ridge, Naranja, Homestead was really mashed up by Andrew. I was living by the zoo back in '92 and it was bad there but not as bad as the south.
Small world. I lived on 87th Avenue off of 168th Street. Moved into the neighborhood in 1972 when Jennings built the development. It was (and still is) a nice area to grow up in. Did you ever go to Perrine Baptist Church when the feeding tents were set up?
