Personally, I would rather buy an actual hang drum from a professional maker, but if you have the time, knowledge, and resources, and you want something a lot cheaper, then why not?

so okay you need an empty never been used propane tank! what if you cant get your hands on one never ever beeen used tank???????? also thanx for your website plenty of advice that helped keep it up man.
Sooo when tuning... cut the opposite way of the U's? And hit it with each cut to listen to the tune? I don't have a chromatic tuner... Would an online tuner work? I would appreciate the help :]
@diezombee to lower the note, you extend the length of the tongues. So start with your tongues short, easier to lengthen them rather than hving to trim them down to smaller mass to make them sound higher in pitch.
hi, great tone and sound...how did you make this hank drum for poor man;) could you tell what was your material and how you tuned the metall or is it a trick? I would be so glad, if you could share your building plans with me and community a bit...thx...
Are the holes taht we can see on the "c" note there from tuning it? or are they soundholes to make it louder or more resonant? Also do you have plans?
I notice on some videos that people have been cutting squared tounges. Whats your opinion on this as I would assume it would be easier to cut them that way rather than having to round them. Should I get the same tone? Also whats your opinion on cutting a port hole if you will either at the bottom or the top as I have seen on some other videos
square will too, whatever is easier for you is what I'd go with. You don't have to put a sound hole, the sound will come and it will fill the room. I only made one so my advice is to experiment and have fun. :)
I have full instructions/plans for building one of these hank drums (which I invented) on my webpage. Because youtube does not allow URLs in this comment section, the address of my webpage is my first and last name run-together then a period then the letters com
Im from Slovakia, and i want to make my own hank drum. Can you please tell me what are the parameters of single panels, and when i made the instrument, how i can tune it? Thank you for your answer!
what guidelines do you use to decide your intitial tung length and width? I have searched forever on the web for some "standard" or "rule of thumb" to go by.
nice, i made my first hank drum today - it's not tuned yet but we managed to make it sound pretty good by chance. once it's done i'll upload some videos :]
finally! someone who made a hank drum that can play it properly and has it tuned! besides dennis, of course. awesome job mate! get a vid of the finished product up sometime.
i had never heard of these drums until a hippie took me into the woods and showed me his. i am blown away with how well yours sounds! i'm going to make one of these really soon
Great sounding instrument. What are the holes drilled in the sides of some of the tongues? I made a "Hank" today and went a little too far on the High C. I was hoping you did it to raise the pitch.
Hey, what scale did you use? I am making a Hank Drum, and I loved your scale.

I cannot for the life of me find any never-filled propane tanks. Is there a way to buy them online or anything?
captainwiggles777 1 year ago
@captainwiggles777 If you live stateside, Home Depot sells them for about $30. I just bought one to convert.

@diezombee KORG sells a great chromatic tuner for around $30 (and you can find it used or on sale for about half that)

Yes, maybe not as much depth/bass but should still work nicely.
Good luck! :)

how did you make this?

Would you get a different sound if you would use a 11 lb gas tank? (That hapi-selling guy is just using those, only the tongues are square XD)
I want to make one as well but I think 11 lb is more compact, playable on your lab.
Nice job!

AM I MISSING SOMEHTING? why couldn't you use a used tank, just fill it full of water to purge any gas out? why wouldn't doing that work?
zash008 2 years ago
I have no idea if that would be ok or not but why not just take it to a pro and let them purge it.
Or, better yet, just buy a brand new empty one at the store for $20 or less.....that's what I did.
Search for vids on propane tank explosions, it's not something to risk ;)
Didgeman80 2 years ago
@Didgeman80 where did you get the empty propane tank?
proudy97 2 years ago
@Didgeman80
I have seen people use plasma cutters on watter filled propane tanks. The thing it works best if there is drainage for when water gets everywhere :D

Also. Have you painted it yet? Beware! The paint lowers the pitch considerably.
