  • What a likeable bunch of fellas...

  • Best song Carole King ever wrote

  • @unskinnyboba This, and Jazzman.

  • Nesmith should be happy is ass wasn't in VIETNAM!

  • I want Daveys Nahru jacket !!

  • Please take the bass guitar away from Davey Jones immediately before he hurts himself.

  • Is that an Ibanez Road Bass? Im going by the headstock

  • The best song The Monkees ever recorded..I always said Mike's guitar lead MADE this single...but Mickey deserves EQUAL props for a truly superb vocal performance (the only time he was better was with "I'm Goin' Down")

  • @GUIDOBRAT mike nesmith got the idea of this guitar intro from The Beatles (George Harrison's) song "i want to tel you"......he said so in an interview

  • @GUIDOBRAT Mickey has/had one of the best pop music voices of the era for sure.

  • I love when people don't get sarcasm... that makes its usage so much better.

  • I love it.. i hear a Hohner Clavinet or something similar and Peter's playing a sparkly pure 60's Fender Rhodes 73 piano.. priceless

  • As far as looks go, I think the Monkees were much cuter than the Beatles.

  • Micky Dolenz is amazing!!!

  • I don't know why, but when Mickey sings "hard" in the beginning his voice sounds so amazing it gives me chills...no gay jokes please.

  • @bigthunk I agree!!

  • is that a henna tatoo on Peter's hand?

  • i saw Davey Jones in cocert a few years back on a Teen Idol tour. It also included Peter Noone from Hermans Hermits, & some other dude I don't recall. Davey said it's still the same as touring back in the 60's. The girls still throw their panties on-stage, they're just BIGGER now! LOL!

  • Who else think of family guy when they hear this :)

  • me remonta a mi niñez...

  • Davey Jones can't play bass guitar. But that's not stopping him from nailing every chick in Pennsylvania!

  • @RaumVogel He probably CAN play bass but he was originally a drummer but was too short to sit behind the set.

  • I didn't know joseph gordon-levitt played drums for the monkees!

  • Did you know "Peter Tork's" father taught at UCONN?

  • It seems pretty obvious from this video that Mike was the only one who actually knew how to play his instrument.

  • Wow, it's Saturday morning and I'm 7 years old again. This is so cool.

  • I always think of the Beatles "Day in the Life" myself when I hear this. What it's about, the wall of sound at the end of the song. Which came first?

  • The Monkees were so under-rated. Yea, they were put together by music exec's. But there was alot of talent there. this has to be one of their best!

  • Obviously influenced by Ke$ha

  • @GKDakota hahhaha nice

  • it's obviously influenced by that Weetles track 'Crater-back Shiter'....ok?... Brilliant song....love this....

  • this song was written by Carol King in response to Penny Lane by the Beatles

  • all the stuff he talks about has gotten 50 years worse! HOuses all the same, TV back then only had 3 channels, if you were lucky!! Every room!! NOw people carry tv with them everywhere....and it is even more worthless junk now!!

  • Obviously the 60s people

  • Obviously influenced by NickelBack

  • @uelssom You are a terrible person.

  • song is written by Carol King

  • Please see a very young Mickey Dolenz meet (Rockford Files) Jim Rockford's father outside the tent at the circus. Search Youtube for Circus Boy - Micky Dolenz.

  • Check that bass!

  • When you step out of the time-machine, which Monkee would you like to bang and why?

I want replies, people. Tell me your stories. I'm bored here.

  • @nauort23 Peter Tork yeah baby!!!

  • @Jazi76 Yeah, baby!!! Thanks for responding... But why Peter Tork?

  • @nauort23 Definitely Mickey Dolenz..because (1) I've always had "a thing" for drummers and (2) i am just attracted to him...!

  • @meg61535 Now THAT's the kind of answer I'm looking for. Thanks. And what's with the drummer thing? OMG, I got it bad. Ringo, Charlie Watts, the guy in the Pretenders with the sideburns, Stewart Copeland from the Police, even the guy from the Association. I always get a crush on the drummer. And I'm not even that crazy about drums... wtf.

  • @nauort23 Have you seen the drummer for The Searchers -- Chris Curtis? Or Dave Clark --- Dave Clark Five! I'm a Drummer Girl, too! I saw Mickey Dolenz AND Ringo Starr in concert! The drums are the heartbeat of the music. I wouldn't want to hear drums without guitars and singers, of course. LOL! Rock on! :-)

  • @ChrisCurtisFan check, and check. And yes they're both hot. Keep playing the drums!

  • @nauort23 hehe!..it sounds like we have alot in common! :)

  • @nauort23 I play the drums baby? Starting next week.

  • (CONT) I know he toured with the Peter Tork Project but that is not comparison in quality. I am sure he surrounded himself with ringers in that band) I actually do have fond memories of the fantasy that was the Monkees but I am clear on the reality.

  • And to the Peter Tork fan. God love him but this was some of the best session players of the time doing the actual parts so that video studio probably did sound pretty silly. You can watch the video and see that the other guys aren't on the parts you are hearing (including Peter) Aalthough Peter would be the next closest to Nesmith...but far off his mark.

  • Sorry. You are right Nona. It was Carole K. I am mixing it up with "Beat of a Different Drum (which was Nesmith).

  • Which one is Sid Vicious?

  • Started listening to them as a kid with my sister and became a fan on my own in the 1980s . had i been a teen when they were popular the first time micky wolud have been my favorite . Gotta love a funny guy !!!!

  • At 0:05 I thought it was Macca !!

  • Boyce and Hart scored on this one. TRhis would have to be the best writing that the Monkees used. Wwhile it was true they were one of the first put together bands with little concern for their "actual" playing ability, the writers around them were some of the best at the time and Nesmith was actually "the" talented musical Monkee. (Hence his contempt at having to sit through what must have been very ridiculous sounds coming out of the rest of them while they mimed this one.

  • @TheLuckydog38 I'm pretty sure the sounds coming from the talented Peter Tork were not ridiculous.

  • @TheLuckydog38 I thought Carole king wrote this song.

  • that's some yummy corporate psych

  • Actually, this was influenced by "I Want to Tell You" by The Beatles

  • Did anybody else come here from Scooby Doo or Family Guy.

  • I looked this song up, and I could not beleve that they let Mike play his guitar. This group is classic. 29 people need to open there eyes and look at it the right way. A man made group finaly is a real rock group.

  • My mom literally taped every single episode of The Monkees tv show.. I grew up spending hours watching them with our crappy VCR. sweet :)

  • Micky D had a great rock n roll voice

  • I have a friend who looks like Davey ._.

  • Thank you family guy

  • they obviously influenced the Beatles "Paperback Writer"

  • @poloplayertj I hope you are joking :P

  • @poloplayertj No, NinetiesYouth has it right.

  • @poloplayertj no it would be the other way around. this song was released in 1967, more than a year after "Paperback Writer"

  • @yardkyle You obviously didn't understand the joke.

  • @StayGayPonyGirls i wonder how many of the people who gave a thumbs up to that comment did understand it...

  • @poloplayertj i think you may be right because this song was written bofore paperback writer

  • @poloplayertj beatles were frist

  • @DennisHarcourt I thought the beatles were first...

  • @poloplayertj I think it was the other way around. I don't think the Monkees wrote this song, anyway.

  • Comment removed

  • @poloplayertj Paperback Writer came out in 1966, this came out in 1967.

  • @poloplayertj

maybe the opposite, paperback writer came out in 1966, this in 1967

  • @stk2521 Paperback Writer was known as the inspiration for "Last Train to Clarksville" actually.

  • @poloplayertj They must have used their time machine then since Paperback Writer was released a year before this

  • @poloplayertj how can THAT be when Paperback Writer PRE-dates Pleasant Valley Sunday by a YEAR...? PPW was written a released in 1966--PVS was written and released in 1967 !! Get the facts straight.

  • @poloplayertj i agree!!!!! but only the bass line in this song a million times better!!!!!

  • Family Guy brought me here.

  • I live on pleasant valley! :D

  • A great song for every jacka## that doesn't know anything about the Monkees and thinks they're a do-gooder band.

  • Mike was always laid back. I always liked this song. Even though satirical I wanted to live in Pleasant Valley as a kid. It sounded nice. Mr Green was very serene and there was charcoal burning which means burgers and swiming pools. Yep

  • So glad I heard this on Family Guy, that little show got me hooked to the Monkees. :D

  • Micky looks like a young, glasses-less Steve Brule

  • Carol King ...YOU SHOULD HEAR HER NEW SONGS....you won't be dissapointed...

  • someone before me said michael didnt look impressed, he wasnt, his momma invented white out, an old typewriter white out for mistakes, he and his mommy were millionares already, being a mommys boy he did what he wanted with the monkees, i love his music, but maybe not him,

  • I THINK NEIL DIAMOND WROTE MOST OF THEIR SONGS!

  • @ambyyy1 Carol King and her husband wrote this tune.

  • Anyone think the drummer looks like jon c. riley? Still like the band.

  • Believe it or not, while Last Train To Clarksville was a "war song" of sorts for the Monkees (listen closely to the lyrics) this one was actually about a mental institution.

  • This song is so satirical and post modern. Love it.

  • My dad grew up on the monkees, and he did the same to us, but two of us. Just because they were made up, the plug there guitar in the amp. I get dibs on mikes guitar

  • I like the drumming. It ain't Mickey, obviously.

  • @BCUMF03 hal blaine of the wrecking crew, perhaps?

  • damn, i miss this!!! :)>

  • got to be in my top ten,my test is if youve heard it a million times and still like it ,its got to be ok

  • I went to iTunes and it said that I had played this song on my iPod over 1500 times.

  • The guitar riff in a small way reminds me of the intro to Paperback Writer (but a little more complex) , but the chord changes are a little more interesting and Paperback Writer doesn't change keys like this tune. So it's proven by that alone that these guys were better than the Beatles! ; )

  • The intro sounds like a sped-up version of the intro to The Beatles' "I Want To Tell You."

  • @DocHolliday1881 it is : )

  • What's on the back of Peter's right hand?

  • @cornbruiser a tat

  • obviously influenced by the Beatles "Paperback Writer"

  • @NinetiesYouth I think your right....

  • @NinetiesYouth funny you should say that. i once heard an interview with either boyce or hart, & whichever of them it was explicitly said that "last train to clarksville" was inspired by "paperback writer." and when i hear "through the looking glass," it sounds to me like "you won't see me."

  • @NinetiesYouth It's actually supposed to be based on the Beatles' "I Want to Tell You," a George Harrison song on Revolver. But yeah, alot of "Paperback Writer" feel to it as well.

  • @NinetiesYouth The entire idea of the monkees was influenced by the beatles....

  • @NinetiesYouth

try 'I want to tell you'

  • @NinetiesYouth Even so....THIS is a better song....it's just so RIGHT.....I even wanna dance...and I erm.....don't

  • I know he sang cripple creek (of which may have been a cover) and Your Auntie Grizelda

  • @IndianaSurfGuitar Dude,if you love guitars, check out the John Denver Guitar Site. They have details on all the guitars he ever owned.Gorgeous instruments.Wonderful custom mades,Gibsons,Taylor etc.The guy had some serious cash and he put a LOT of it into his guitars.Mouth-watering for a guitarist.

  • AHHHHHH... back to reality !

  • another great carole king number

  • Hey, does anyone know if Peter ever sang lead on any Monkees song? If not, why not?

  • Anyone notice Peter has a tattoo on his hand?

  • Great Song !!!! keyboard work (from whoever) - Not Bad, either :-)

  • @nena18sept Yawn!

  • man, The Monkees, The Beatles, The Who, The Animals and much more... CAN IT GET ANY BETTER?

  • @uelssom The Rolling Stones with Brian Jones?

  • @Deathsquad49 I (apologize for that) totaly forgot The Rolling Stones, but you can assume then in the "and much more..." :p

  • @uelssom Lol it's all good!

  • such a underrated band

  • omg! just saw an amazing mashup of this song. you have to ck it out.

    1:09 into video

    very cool!!

  • ...Mickey Dolenz was never given just credit for his great vocals!!!!

  • @OlymPigs2010 I so agree !!! I think he was great ! I just found a song he did "Goin Down" by the Monkees(Micky Dolenz)...it is here on Youtube. If you like him...check it out......it is so unreal ! I had never heard it before and was so amazed and I think you will love it too !

    Peace...*Mel*

  • @OlymPigs2010 that's right. just listen to "as we go along" & "porpoise song."

  • They are in a league of their own,i was 5 when this came out and still remember it due to my parents playing their records then :)

  • Omg!! How sad!! They're trying to mimic The Beatles!

  • @shilojty how?

  • @shilojty Have you ever heard the Beatles, similar type of music but very different. Although the Beatles loved the show and music the Monkees did.

  • family guy!

  • cool

  • This is a great song and a great video - even Mike's bored deadpan making it clear this is a lip-sync works well. However, I can't help but notice the irony of a band jeering at the guy who "has a TV in every room" when they made their fortunes off being popularized on a TV show...and are playing in front of what looks like a color TV test pattern to boot!

  • Dolenz had a weird set up. Looks like he's left footed and right handed.

  • 1:10 nice face!

  • Most laid back drummer ever. :)

  • I do love he Monkees, but in this video, I notice how anytime they have a little drum riff, the camera moves off of Mickey and looks somewhere else until the riff is over. LOL.

  • Davy went to Danny Bonaduce to learn to play bass........

  • Oh my gosh. The guitarist/bassist (I don't know what it was, the first guy they showed at the beginning) looks just like Green Day's bassist.

  • very cute, I love them

  • That is one group of weird lookin people...

  • this is HQ ? it's not even in sync !!

  • Mickey was actually supposed to be the singer, Mike on bass an Peter on guitar. Jones was too short behind the drums so the lineup was redone to the lineup we know today. Dolenz was actually held in high regard by Boyce and Hart ( music writers) and even at drum position, in the studio utilized Mickey's talent much for the " Monkee Sound"

    ..

  • DAMN IT ! I just want Daveys jacket !!

  • so the drummer has down's syndrome or what?

  • @scpttybpyo8 haha. no. see. back then, before photoshop and tummy tucks, people looked like real people..

  • @scpttybpyo8 WHAT!?! NO MICKY DOLENZ DOES NOT HAVE DOWN SYNDROME DUDE HE IS A GROOVY SINGER HOW COULD YOU EVEN THINK HE HAS DOWN SYNDROME! (im not mad im just suprised so dont get mad at me)

  • I'll always love this song till the day I die!

  • LOL! Davey Jones gets bagged not playing or pantomiming at 0:51

Mike is obviously not impressed but he is the only one who's actually pantomiming the correct notes, fingerings and chords.

  • Apparently, Davey's bass is plugged into Mickey's bass drum? S'up wit dat? Also, does Peter have something tattooed on the back of his right hand, or is it just some weird birthmark? Good tune though.....

  • Check out my remake video of this song :D

  • Mike isn't even trying with the lip syncing. :)

  • @stramayne Mike was a poor sport. He wanted to be a Monkee, and then bitched and whined all the way to the bank !

  • One of my Favorite Monkee songs !!!

  • Yeah, Davy was really playing those bass lines. Yeah....sure. LOL.

  • 0:05 Trolling the keyboard guy lol

  • Hard to believe that they are not in the Top 100 Best Rock n Roll Bands of the 60s.

  • you are sooooo MUCH BETTER THAN THE BEATLES!!

    FROM SHARON EDMARK

  • I LOVE ALL!!!

  • cool dudes

  • The drummer looks like Matthew Perry :o

  • :D YAY im not the only guy in the world that like the Monkees

  • Nesbitt not enjoying himself :)

  • Nesbitt is taking the piss :)

  • This is obviously dubbed. But more so, is that a tatoo on Peter Tork's right hand? Still think it is a good enough song to favorite!! Thanks for the posting

  • i would so ride a bike down my neighbor hood :D

  • epic song!!! ck out this L.A. band that takes pleasant valley monday and fuses it with some thelonious monk! pleasant valley monkday! so cooool!.

    nutty press kit

  • It's better than most of the other fictitious TV shows on in the 60s ...

  • @YeJiub It's from the original piece - MY recording is HQ.

  • Carole King wrote this song and she is a god. Check her out!

  • @OzarksDad

Carloe King wrote many, many, many songs, from"Locamotion", to, well the list goes on & on.

BTW, did you know that Mike Nesmith wrote "Different Drum", recored by Linda Ronstadt? Also, his mother invented "Whiet-Out". For you KIDDIES that don't know what that is, it's something you used to correct a TYPO on your type-writer. That was B4 IBM came out with the Correcting Selectric. ALL of this was B4 the COMPUTER generation!!! That being said, ROCK ON!!!

    MUSTANG SALLY

  • Love this song - great guitar riffs and tune. Kinda funny video though - watch the drums and the keyboards - neither one is playing the song LOL. The 60s were not known for good lipsync technique :-)

Still a great song, lots of fun times listening to this on my AM transistor radio...

  • badass guitar riff

  • 1:28 Peter looks like a total dork. Rhymes with Tork.

On the other hand, this is Micky at his hottest. What I wouldn't give for a time machine so I could run my hands through his luscious mop of hair!

  • the truth is in the pudding!

  • Gotta love tork's hand heena tattoo. When I got my hands tattoos i thought of Tork!
