  • Is the pop up firing? Does it have to fire to trigger the other externals?

Can you link me to the page on how that works?

  • So you need 3 Flashguns, would probably be cheaper to buy a white backdrop

  • @BloodlustBlackout You'd still need to light the backdrop for it to overexpose and appear white, otherwise it would turn out grey (and have Verity's shadow on it).

  • Yo Funny D you and I were once those guys that said, NO to Flash as well as auto, now I'm shooting in Ap Pri and Shut Pri and surely I'll be playig more with program soon as well and yes I am into speeds bigtime now as well. Nice work ! Cheers!

  • this guy is a beast

  • Dom, this is pretty good for, as you said, shooting high key anywhere. I find however, that blowing out the background completely to mimick a studio shoot brings its own issues to the table. If i can't get enough distance to the background, the power from the back lights bleed onto the subject. as is evident especially in Verity's hair. Any ideas how to fix this?

  • @kasperlaerkesen I don't think he is trying to mimic a studio shoot. In a studio scenario you would be working with a white background - not a messy background. To blow out the mess - the background is probably 3 stops over the exposure for the subject (any less and the mess would be visible). In a studio scenario - your background would typically be 1 stop over the subject - to avoid any "bleed".

  • @kaggaro.....the umbrella? just in case it rains inside the studio. as you said, you saw flashing from inside the umbrella? those are actually lightnings, keep on watching, be patient, rain drops you will see...........

  • Works GREAT!! Thanks for the tip.

  • does the umbrella have a light inside or is that just bouncing back the light from the 2 speedlights?

  • @kaggaroo the umbrella is just an umbrella the flash is pointed into the umbrella and the light bounces out of it

  • @Dombowerphoto Did you use a light meter at all before you start filming?

  • @Dombowerphoto you really need to use punctuation. so there are 3 flashes?

  • Thanks for the info tutorial i just subscribed

  • amazing work-thak you for al the great information!

  • Fantastic tip!

  • I love high-key style! Just recently used it in my new video... Von Vonni Fashion

  • Excellent! what was your camera settings???

  • impressive! I have learn so much with your video techniques and feel relieve to know you can use only speed lights to make such beautiful work.

    Thank you so much Dom.

  • She's quite the looker 'aint she?... :-)

  • triggering with the popout flash is not the best way though..

any pocket wizards or similar products are much more versatile..

i.e. if you're using the flashes in a softbox ...

    cheers! :)

  • @floling i believe he's using Nikon's CLS

  • sir i'm sorry but, may i ask how many flash guns do you advice to have for flash photography.. canon and nikon flash are a bit costly so do you recommend generic flash??

  • @empot789 Have a look at the Nissin or Metz flashes that are compatible with Nikon or Canon wireless systems.

  • are you on spot? matrix?

  • Gonna try this tips tonight... hope I get same results. Cheers.

  • Verity is HOT.

  • Hello Dom and thank you for all of the skills you passing by. I can see that you are using also pop up flash from your camera, is it really necessary? I have got in hot shoe radio trigger and I am not able to use the pop up flash than :-(

  • @PhotographybyMilan the pop-up is just to trigger the external flashes. Check the blog for details

  • @Dombowerphoto Thank you mate

  • Nice! This is magic.

  • All your videos are so inspiring! I always thought that i needed a studio or big umbrellas to do that kind of shooting. Now my question is, if i have few hundred bucks to spend, would you recommend me to buy a 35mm f1.8 af-s or buy a flash (sb-700 or sb-900 it's what's available at my camera shop)?

Right now i only own a D7000 with the kit lens which is 18-105mm

  • i have a question, how did u get that strobe flash with the speedlight flash? pls tell me!

  • do you shoot in manual? It doesn't look like you have to manually focus so I'm curious. Your work is amazing and you make it look so easy! Thanks!

  • Dom my man! can this be done with one sb-900 in back, an one Continous light in front................

  • @QuarterCrawl you would need one hell of a powerful continuous light light. like the kind of light you get on a film set 5thousand watts kind of power

  • Hi Dom. Great tutorial. I have been following you for months.

I noticed a light on the model prior to you firing your flash. Was that the auto focus/flash metering light or was that some sort of modeling lamp feature? I know by holding the aperture preview button you can get the flash to strobe but this was something different. Thanks again for all your help/tutorials. Much appreciated.

  • @TasKarp its the auto focus assistant lamp on the camera.

  • @TasKarp The camera does that to make the iris use to the light that is about to blast from the flash.

  • Awesome. It looks like you are using 3 flashes here (2 for background and 1 for the umbrella) Are you using your built-in pop up flash also?) How can I do this? I have two 580ex ii flashes and I used a canon eos rebel xsi which I am uncertain if I can use the pop up flash on my camera as a 3rd flash in conjuction with the two 580's? Still trying to understand the directions. Lol. If I cannot use the pop up flash and only have the two flashes will this still work? Thanks.

  • @rsbridges50 got to remember i am a nikon shooter not canon. and for flash the rules between canon and nikon are very different

  • @Dombowerphoto Ok, thanks for replying.

  • @Dombowerphoto Ok, thanks for replying.

  • very informative vid dom! thanks and more power!

  • what lens is that?

  • @ErDerErIs uh, nikon 18-200 ;P

  • @ErDerErIs details on the blog

  • @alexx791 i have no idea what your comment says it makes no sense. what does resp. reducet mean?

  • @Dombowerphoto

what i wanted to say: high and low key images are usually characterized by some features 1. they have huge white respectively black areas 2. high key images often have a low contrast, no shadows and are very bright - low key images, on the other hand, have a high contrast and do not show the subject entirely 3. they are both very often black and white

in your video you show a way how to get a nice black or white background - that's what i think... ;)

PS sorry for my bad english

  • @alexx791 high key or low key is not about just black and white. the word of importance is KEY, they key tone normally falling in the middle of the exposure range, a high key image is where it is all skewed to the right of the histogramme (to the bright side) a low key is where it is skewed to the left (nowever it is not just characterised by over and underexposure as you have noted.

  • I wan always a bit ignorant about flashes, but the more I learn the more I realise how much easier photography can be when you know how to control flash lighting.

  • i have vivitar 285s, but they dont seem to sync over 200, can i get this too? this is awesome, what is the power of the flash power in the umbrella, both the same?

  • @merrittixtapa79 you cant unless you have the super computer flashes that are the nikon sb900 flash powers are all controled by the on camera flash through ttl

  • @merrittixtapa79 you cant sync faster than 1.250 unless you have the nikon sb900 flashes because they are super computers of flashes, the umbrella flash was around 1/20th power

  • Domb I really appreciate your tips bro!

  • @Law2708 thanks

  • thank you for todays lesson Dom!

    <3

  • Uhm, what is with the background?

  • @Lilkiwiguy87 its just a horrible basement where people used to party in

  • Hey Dom

does it matter if one flash is weaker than the other?

  • @ionxi as long as they are pointing in the same place. you can do it with even one flash, just aslong as it blows out the background

  • i gotta get me a flash or two. Do you have any recommendations on budget studio equipment? I find these sorts of things can rack up quite a big bill quickly.

  • @lepeanut calumet are doing a flash and battery system (genisis 300 b) i think and together it is around the same price as a nikon sb900. but not as mobile obviously

  • @lepeanut

look for vivitar , i saw some pretty effing good result with those.

  • Sweet results! I don't know whether to compliment you for your results or nag you like a horrible girlfriend/mother for that horrible background!

  • Great tip. Thanks Dom. How can you make it black? Now all I need is a second flash.

  • @crazyyeled that is in the next video

  • That's a pretty awesome tips!

  • This is a great lesson.

  • Now if only I had flashes! Or a camera that can actually use CLS for that matter.

  • Great tip thanks very much!

  • useful tip, stunning model
