@codyhansonbass The bas solo and tone in this in horrible (all fast and tasteless, no repeated phrases), Dave Weckl is a great drummer with a technique that other drummers cry over, but he lacks musicality (imo). the only thing I enjoy hearing in this are the Horns.
ive just been watchin some drum solos for the past hour and IN EVERY SINGLE VIDEO ppl HAVE TO SAY this guy is better than the this, lombardo/jordison/lang/bozzio/barker. WT THE HELL! JUST WATCH THE VIDEO AND GO "AWHHHHHH...AWESOME"
This style, "Whoever plays the most notes wins" is quite different from and more prefered over "Whoever plays the loudest wins". Both styles exist under the category of "Muscle Beach" music, to me. Impressive. Superior chops.
@loonpolice1 that s the coolest an d funniest and most succinct definition of fusion i ve ever heard.
its funny cuz i was listening to jaco s version and my feet and body were tappin and with this one i think you need 4 esspressos and a 3 week seminar at berklee before you can "functionally assimilate the groove to point where your physical response matches the metronmic theoretical perfection of the alleged funk groove." lol
@Sntte616 Couldn't agree more, the bass solo is just pure self indlugence, very clever, but what's it supposed to mean? It's not a 'tune' is it? This guy is technically a magician, but musically, I don't know... Not what I want to listen to...
@BlueBlade777 Yes, I can agree with that, and by the way, when I said 'Not what I want to listen too', I didn't mean the whole track, which I love (amazing chord substitutions!) Just the last, 'frantic' bit of the bass solo.
I hate your guts Weckl. Every time I watch one of your videos I want to burn my drum set and take up the sitar, or the fucking lute, or something. LOL!
@1smoothbaritone r u fuckin mad? jaco could put twice these notes in any music! he was a fuckin shredder, and a genious. the soul is not in the number of notes, but in the musicianship.
@ManelRuivo why do i have to be "mad"? Jaco is not GOD ..THESE GUYS ARE OBVIOUS GREAT MUSICIANS MY PERSONAL OPINION IS THAT IT WAS A LITTLE RUSHED AND LACKED SOULFUL FLOW! soul is not in the number of notes....correct.but where you place them so that your audience can feel the music ......it was a very good show of skill but again no flow of soul and the chicken is a soulful song! i respect your opinion respect mine ive been playing that song for years...
From 1:47 to 2:27 I didn't hear 1 bass note..however at 2:28, just may be the coolest break in music history...Oh, yeah the guy one drums ain't bad, wonder if he could play Sweet Home Alabama?
stuff is great, i love weckl and his style, so rediculously good, not to mention he and the bass are so tight!... great... and this is why i love music!
This is the kind of performance that I love, where the song is just so fun that everyone can't help but smile, and where the playing's so tight that it could be a studio recording.
@breebreeohbree94 Not everything revolves around a double pedal. Dave pulled it off awesomely without one. So would you say a great drummer who isn't using a double pedal is a bad drummer? Geez... Go and watch Travis Barker videos...
these are the best musicians on the planet right here. it doesnt matter if its just jazz, no one else has the physical ability to play like anyone in this band. its a little sickening. makes me want to quit playing drums. i want to see weckl and tom kennedy play with steve vai
First thing's first, this guy is one of the BEST and recognized drummer in the world. That alone deserves respect from all musicians.
If Dave Weckl played it any other way or tried to mimic Peter Erskine's style, AGAIN people will complain that he's just copying...
Great drummers interpret a song in his/her own way. No drummer should sound the same as the other. So quit whining and go find another video if you don't like this great dude!
Great Stuff!!! I love this kinda music,The Gadd Gang,Steve Smith and Vital Information........Ive met Gadd a few times,Helluva player,Musician and a Nice Guy,also Met Steve Smith in Iridium Jazz Club NY few years back,he couldnt have been nicer when I said I was on holiday from Scotland! Dave Weckl? Id love to hear this guy live and meet him too,That box is still to be ticked!!!!! Keep Swinging folks!! George Gray.....Alloa,Scotland
it's just my taste and my opinion obviously, i don't like this version of the chicken at all, for the ones who like this i suggest to listen at jaco's version at birthday concert than compare with this one, try to listen that than maybe you understand what i mean by inspired cause it's the only way i can explain you, not easy with words :-)
All excellent players. I hate that bass output sound, sounds like a vulgar toy, it's way too clean, although bassist plays terrific. He should have asked for a rawer output.
"tighter than an atom's ass"... very nice word imagery.. and I'm thinking that one "dislike" had to be an accidental click... just had to be.... and I gotta say, the bass is likewise tighter than an atom's ass.... (and I've seen Jaco)
i didn't like this version at all, Dave Weckl IS NOT jaco pastorius of the drum, he is the far opposite in my opinion, jaco was an ispired one and Dave isn't really
Great band! Great performance! (But sadly missing Buzz Feiten's guitar work from the original line-up for a bit of extra rock and funk flavour. Saw them live and loved that they insisted on no smoking during the whole set :-) Thanks for posting!
(con'd) ...i've realized it's all about a stream of thought, and arranging all these little parts, and seamlessly, putting them together. truth is, "not ALL of weckl's beats n' grooves' are beyond say, your average good drummer's reach or ability, to play the same thing. it's just that he is impeccable at "Choosing his parts and little fills' and placing them in the Right spot. Always. think about that?
of course he IS waayy above your average drummer! Lol! great Vid!
just realized something. yeah, yeah, i'm a drummer. more rock and pop, and perhaps a bit funky. Jazz isn't really my thing. I can imply a simple swing bop feel, but.....don't really possess the "True" chops that a dude studying and playing that style primarily, would have. here's the deal: Folks, it's all about "Arrangement, and Placement of your notes".. it's THAT SIMPLE. yes, weckl is an absolute Sicko. dude can play anything, but watching for the millionth time.... (con'd)
well...I look through u tube for new drummers...I've up to 200-250 drummers in my life...when I look back to dave weckl it's like I've seen only one...
@jgsky Tom Kennedy, Him and Weckl have known practically known each other since they were teenagers. I met Dave and Tom a couple years ago and Tom was very cool.Being i'm a drummer and a huge Weckl fan i got to talk with Dave a couple minutes,He was genuinely appreciative of me being a true fan and gave me a handshake and a hug before he left to go onstage.Made my night there very cool guys.
@dutoith15 Well it was a moment i'll never forget i'll tell you that! I mean it was one of those rare me and him one on one chats for about 3 minutes, mainly so short cause he had like 10 minutes b4 he had to play. But when i started going on and on about being a fan since like 1988 he just had this look on his face with a grin like he knew i wasn't bullshittin you know? I mean when you meet someone you've looked up to since u were 15,and get to tell them what u always wanted to?how cool is that!
@dylanacious Take a fuckin' bow, I just get goosebumps reading your reply. I know what you are talking about, I stay in South Africa, and I had a chance to meet a International rugby player I've also admired, yep, I know the feeling, but I don't think it is as amazing as meeting Dave. I would rather meet Dave than Steve Gadd, Dave just seem more like a peoples person, Steve so private. I am not deusching Steve, he's a super drummer, but dave............F M!!
@dutoith15 lmao!!! Yeah you know Gadd played on Daves first solo release Master Plan, you might already know that,in 1990!That's funny man.I hope you get the pleasure one day.Real quick,Me and Dave talked a bit about some of his musical feats, compositions, etc. One of his most ridiculously complicated pieces with Chick Corea,on Inside Out 1988,He informed me it was mostly if not all improvisation, just off the cuff!I I felt like just blowin my f'n head off!lol I just shook my head and went to my gig
@tarikghi hey, theres nothing wrong with smoking a fat joint before a show. Even the most talented individuals gotta think about tradition and shit...
Hearsay isn't usually a great way to go when talking about other people's lives. Take what your friend said and forget it--unless maybe you know Dave personally and hang with him @ Starbucks. Then let us know--maybe.
great version but im sorry,i prefer the bass version of jaco

@jgsky Tom Kennedy, Him and Weckl have known practically known each other since they were teenagers. I met Dave and Tom a couple years ago and Tom was very cool.Being i'm a drummer and a huge Weckl fan i got to talk with Dave a couple minutes,He was genuinely appreciative of me being a true fan and gave me a handshake and a hug before he left to go onstage.Made my night there very cool guys.

@dylanacious HOLY SHIT!!! wtf was that like?? I'll cum in my pants..............lol. You spoke to weckl? Good 4 u, I wish I was you.

I am not deusching Steve, he's a super drummer, but dave............F M!!
dutoith15 1 year ago
@dutoith15 lmao!!! Yeah you know Gadd played on Daves first solo release Master Plan, you might already know that,in 1990!That's funny man.I hope you get the pleasure one day.Real quick,Me and Dave talked a bit about some of his musical feats, compositions, etc. One of his most ridiculously complicated pieces with Chick Corea,on Inside Out 1988,He informed me it was mostly if not all improvisation, just off the cuff!I I felt like just blowin my f'n head off!lol I just shook my head and went to my gig

@zzzzzushi Are you sure that's the truth? It would suck if it's true.
tarikghi 1 year ago
@tarikghi hey, theres nothing wrong with smoking a fat joint before a show. Even the most talented individuals gotta think about tradition and shit...

@tarikghi
So the mere fact that he likes to smoke before a show somehow makes him less respectable?

Hearsay isn't usually a great way to go when talking about other people's lives. Take what your friend said and forget it--unless maybe you know Dave personally and hang with him @ Starbucks. Then let us know--maybe.
Great video. Thanks for posting.
