@spichanator1 can u download games that would normally cost money for free and play it if u root your phone? i have a jailbroken ipod touch and that's what' i use it for.
@lucirz You can, but I don't believe that even requires root access. You only have to check off the "unknown sources" box in your applications part of "settings". There are plenty of criminals that post pay apps on MediaFire and the like for you to steal. Just Google the app you want to steal and you too can become a thief! Times are tough for everybody! If taking 99 cents away from a dev, go ahead! BTW, there's a two year old in a stroller down the street with a lollipop that you might want.
@dannypineda Extending battery life is only one of the benefits of rooting your phone. I use AdFree android to block ads in my apps. I use Market Enabler to access other Android markets from other carriers around the world. I tether my other devices, laptop etc. to my phone. You can change your ROM and theme to suit your tastes. The list goes on and on.
@dannypineda Yes, personalizing the device to your tastes is great, but so are the practical points of overclocking the CPU and opening the possibility for more apps than those allowed on your carriers Android Market.
Downsides, sure! You could make a mistake and brick your phone (this becomes less likely all the time now that HTC is opening up the bootloader)! You void your warranty (if you brick your phone it seems that they don't even look to see if it was rooted)!
@tlcbadboy its true. I also had a g1 and upgraded to a mt4g. The root and custom rom world has changed quite a bit from what it was.
While there has always been the potential for problems, its 95% of the time remained in the realm of potential and often because someone didn't follow the instructions.
Thankfully most things are idiot proof almost now, so feel free to experiment!!
@tlcbadboy Of course I have! LOL! Call me crazy, but sometimes that's what the fun part of this stuff is. Trying different ROM's just because you can to see what does and doesn't work. Being on the bleeding edge and pushing the hardware to more than stock is my sickness. Things are better now then early G1 ROM's. :0)
In truth, for stability, battery life and reliability, take a look at Royal Ginger 3.0. It's based on CyanogenMod (as are many ROM's) and is a great vanilla Android ROM.
@saigondj No graphic degrade at all, generally by overclocking a ROM on a rooted phone, you can get better frame rates and performance overall. Some kernels tweak the graphics more than others but you'll get better than stock just because you can crank up the CPU.
@lainey674 After rooting your device, the easiest way is to download SetCPU from the market. This app allows you to set the sliders for min and max CPU speeds and will also allow you to set up many different profiles such as, screen off, charging, charging AC, charging USB and so on.
Different ROMs use different kernels and as such, have slightly different top end CPU speeds. I'm currently using Royal GInger 3.0 that has a 1804 MHz peak. Not bad for a 1024 stock chip.
@BadAssNinjaz Rooting allows for use of different ROM's, kernels and apps. You can overclock or underclock the processor to increase battery life. You can make your phone a wifi hot spot. You can block ads in your apps. Get apps that aren't "meant" for your phone. You can use different Android markets than your current carriers for more apps from around the world. There are also some unofficial markets you can download apps from.
Lots of options beyond just making your phone run smoother.
@ManUnited10r thats a very darn good question. I suppose if your not annoyed by the way yours looks... it must be a good one. lol. Now I am gonna be anxious till I get my new phone later this week... its in the mail right now.
I don't have any firm numbers, but I'd say at least a 20% increase running conservative cpu settings and some of the helper apps mentioned, like auto pilot.
@beratalbania what? it thouth the test shows the rooted one has the bad screen. You're stating it backwards. can u explain? cuz im concerned of getting bad screen after rooted. (i have not rooted yet)
@saigondj oops lol the rooted one has the bad screen* you dont get the bad screen by rooting, its the actual panel check where your phone was made, china or taiwan , if it was made in taiwan than you most likely have the bad screen like me if its made in china its most likely the good screen
Couple questions: I was wondering what type of performance scores you were getting at your preferred 1200 level (we just saw it at 1700, or so)? And, what are the dangers if I was to root my phone with very or little knowledge of the process? Worth taking the "risk"? Thanks!
According to what I've gathered on XDA the rooted phone has the "bad" screen. Much as your comment suggests, it's all in the eye of the beholder...or their monitor. I've never been bothered by it and I only mention it since some folks think there is an issue.
@spichanator1 Actually, it just 1.depends on who was the developer/maker of the phone--China came with lots of "bad screens" and the certain colors mean a slight hardware difference when having a gingerbread rom on it. Also, the white, and black HTC Glaciers have the bad screens--my purple one doesn't, and i went to a T-Mobile store and the black one was bad. Just giving some facts out there.

@artinhopar818 No there's very little graphics change. Any change is just the CPU processing info faster.

Can someone please explain the purpose of rooting a phone.
From what i understood in this video it is because you can change the speeds on the processor. Is there any other reason?

@spichanator1 So pretty much its to hack it and personalize it.
ive done some stuff on my laptop and should b able to do it on the phone.
just want to know if it is worth it and what are some of the drawbacks.
