First heard this song a few years ago on some cds that a former co-worker gave to me- a down-load on a hundred years of jazz-4 cds through the twentieth century of jazz-'JUST AWESOME".
This takes me back. I also wore this record out in '76. And, hey aren't these guys just having so much fun! Oh and Crusaders & Steely Dan...Larry Carlton, respect.
I have two copies of this record that are completely worn out. I must have played this tune every night for six or seven years in clubs, but I can still listen to this over and over again. Larry's sound and playing is just flawless. This had got to be in my top ten guitar solos.
This song made me a Larry Carlton fan. But you know, for as awesome as the guitar solo is, Joe Sample's keyboard is a great compliment to that guitar (he's in a league all by himself), and Stix Hooper has to be in any discussion of great drummers like Steve Gadd, Harvey Mason, Buddy Miles, and Billy Cobham.
@eric2181965 There's not a 70s Crusaders album I don't like. A good day for me is putting them on in succession and just experiencing one good vibe after another. d-_-b
IMO, this song has the baddest jazz lead solo ever! Larry really plays this solo very soulful and with attitude. This solo is the meat of this song. Larry's lead playing really stands out and is "in your face" lead guitar.
Definitley one of the greatest Bass guitar works ever! Robert "Pops" Popwell has the credit. I remember seeing the Crusaders playing in the late 70's and he was so much "in the groove" and had his eyes closed and he swayed as he layed his funk. It was INCREDIBBLE!!!!!!!!
I don't intend to engage in hyperbole. But this is the single greatest jazz-funk composition of all time. Composition aside, how many musicians could even play these licks?
u cant be sure if its funk or not, ur right, it is not the " typical " funk style, this is jazzrock.. but often it is hard 2 deciide what style it is, cuz artists never try to follow the typical stuff, there are always new styles, ehmm i would say this could probably be jazzfunk or jazzrock..
stix hooper one bad man...whos drummin like that these days..

To hell with those so called Jazz purist. Commercial jazz , Jazz/Fusion, and Funk was some damn good music.
