  • This one is so EVERTHING! I remember when I would sit & listen to this 20 times in a row..

  • Absolutely one of the haunting, beautiful songs ever made.

  • I will go east and go west

    From whence came

    The moon and the sun

The moon and the sun will go

    And the young man

    With his reputation behind him

I will go wherever he came from -

The young man with his reputation behind him

  • A great TV theme tune, Harrys game was a great piece of TV.

  • click "like" if the I, Partridge book took you here!

  • @maddzzz I'm making a playlist of his playlist now for when I read the book! I've got it for Christmas from my dad but have to hold on to it myself for a while and it's sooo tempting...

  • chicane brought me here

  • preciosa cancion y que paisajes tan bonitos

  • This music gives me goosebumps! I wish we had this series in the States!

  • Whow ever! I love your voice over all Maire.S.

  • The TV programme Harry's Game was about the Northern Ireland conflict, following Bloody Sunday. It told of anBritish Army undercover soldier who is discovered and executed.

The song, in Gaelic was bought by millions who had no idea.

  • why was he executed?

  • @magpie4321 Because he was sent over by the British military to gather intelligence on IRA volunteers and have them shot dead.

  • @musicartism Why?

  • @magpie4321 Look, I answered your question, you may be a magpie but I am not a bleedin parrot, I am not repeating the answer again (presuming that you're repeating your earlier question). Ádh mór ort! (Good luck!)

  • @musicartism good luck to you too! ♣

  • @musicartism How'd you learn Irish?

  • @magpie4321 It's a mandatory school subject in Ireland

  • @pdawwwg96 Man, that's just awesome! Catholic school?

  • @magpie4321 Yes, I learned Irish at a Catholic convent school (it was compulsory), and then as an adult I kept it up through joining Comhaltas Ceoltóirí na hÉireann (where all activities are pure trad (played trad music on flute, bodhrán, tin whistle for years) (then went home to listen to pure progressive psychedelic rock to escape from it all!). I am very patriotic, so it was easy for me to keep up my interest in the Irish language. Beir bua agus beannacht!/I send you my best wishes!

  • @musicartism I am honored to meet you!!! Keep on talkin Irish and I'll talk 'Mericun. You are a dear one! God bless you! What matters is, is that we "love one another" as Christ loves us!

  • @magpie4321 Such a beautiful comment - thank you so much.

Clannad (their sister Enya too, of course) have done wonders for promoting interest in the Irish language & culture abroad through their talented mix of modern & trad techniques (you won't find any narrow purist attitudes there!). Glad you like Clannad in the USA - Clannad abú! (forever).

You have your priorities right (mine's a work-in-progress). I wish you great Love & Happiness (Grá agus Sonas) always in abundance!

  • @musicartism Like all Irish people of extraction I write a wee bit: No word nor sound Is spoken or heard No one on earth Can know or tell What beauty waits For love given; If we in our complexity Can only hold on; But hey, who’s to say It’s what we make Of our perplexity 8/8/11
  • @musicartism That's what we call in America "a sweet" comment. God bless you too! God has graced me with the Catholic faith.

  • @magpie4321 You’re a Poet, I didn’t know it, ‘tis lovely poetry so it is - I love it - please keep on keeping on writing on for you have an amazing talent for it (the legendary Irish ‘gift of the gab’ is strong within you).

Míle buíochas, Clannad, for singing me through many a dark day and bright night.

p.s. Love every body everyone (I’m too tired;(

  • @musicartism Yeah, love is tiresome. Here's a new one: Saved by Love-- You know it’s true, He’s in love with you! How do we give back? In many and small ways; We are not much, But Love gave himself; One thing he asks, The “Amen” of the will! 8/19/11
  • @magpie4321 Your poetry is lovely - it completely melts me. Anyway, it is great what you say and you have made my day. You are right of course, everyone needs love, you can survive without it, but you can't really live happily without it. Glad that you are full to the brim with love and that you love Clannad too. Love always to you and all in the USA. Happy days!

  • @musicartism I looked up the translation of this song, does it make sense?Anyways, her voice is hauntingly like Enya's!

  • @magpie4321 My understanding is, it’s about a woman in love, pining after a man who has lost his reputation in the local community. She will go east and west, anywhere to seek him out and be with him, despite the fact that he is now cast adrift and shunned by all.

  • @musicartism Well, that's an awesome explanation! Thank you!

  • @magpie4321 I left out one vital additional meaning, the song says life is transitory, the moon (dark times) and sun (sunny times) will go, just like him going and leaving his bad reputation behind him - life is transitory (small relief to her!). This was an important meaning (can't believe I left it out), as this song was composed to give hope to those that were in complete despair as a result of the conflict in the 6 counties of Ireland.

  • @musicartism Forgive yourself. Y'all have a great deal to offer to the world. Here's one: The Kingdom of Love A rose for you One for me too; Flower perfected In shape and scent Epitome of virtue In floral form; Weeds are shunned Lesser of the two; One is a “garden of” The other suppressed; Virtues and vices Flowers and weeds He sorts by deeds
  • @magpie4321 You write such lovely poetry, you truly do. More power to you,YOU'RE LOVELY - THANK YOU!

Lots of love in the Kingdom of Love to you (for you truly are in Love, otherwise you’d run a mile from writing such rosemantic poetry, beautiful 'n all as it is). Oceans~of~love~to~you~& yours~\o/

Rock on Clannad - mo cheol thú \o/

  • @musicartism Everyone is lovely! Here's one for ya: The Bulb— It returns annually You see this thing Bulging every spring; Receding when cold Dying when old; His love never dies It just simply hides Hiding in faith tests Guiding through the rest “Where are you?” The doubtful query “Here, you cannot see” 8/25/11
  • @magpie4321 "Love never dies" - you're so right there!

Living things come and go like the sun/Leaving their shadows on the moon/But, Love shines on and on/

    Love continues to live on...

    - musicartism 26.08.11

  • @musicartism Amen brotha! as we would say in America

  • @musicartism Bright Love In the land of belief Give someone relief Let your love shine If not, who’ll know? Be courteous, wait Do not hesitate, Their needs embrace Stop and listen Love, like a speech Unseen, who’ll hear? Bright be your love! 8/26/11
  • @magpie4321 Thank u! May you see love’s soft white light shine on you, May you feel the warmth of love’s tender grip And its steadfast sweet merciless hold on you, May you drink in the sweetness of it And never taste its bitterness & the gut wrenching agony of it, but I know only too well, the darkness too attracts, It too entwines, grips you & holds you bloody steadfast, And it too entices and has its own dark beauty to it. Bye4Now- Love4Ever! xxx Musicartism 29.08.11
  • @musicartism God's mercy and love win the day! Keep your eyes and chin up; though the best of us fall, we can always get up. Sounds like you've experienced something which I have not. Lost in His love, until we meet in heaven!

  • @musicartism I can see that the Gift runs in you too! How very beautiful. ♣

  • @musicartism That is true, but God is Mercy and Love unending! Don't give into the Author of darkness. I would like to see you in heaven! Love is stronger than death

  • @magpie4321 Thank u 4 the heart warming words. I have got a lot of compliments this week - I must surely be dying!

This song is great for people who are trapped in the trenches with themselves, battling their own bloody demonic forces; it reminds them that everything that makes them mad + sad moves on, as surely as the darkness of night & the brightness of morning everything passes in life - except love.

    Oceans~of~love~+~fishes~&~best~wishes~to~you~&~yours~from~across~the~seas~ :)

  • @musicartism Beautiful, have hope: Living… In this world A soul like a pearl Situations conflicting Often contradicting Your soul bought At such a price You may go astray But mercy provides A path to the way 9/27/11
  • Thank you for your last poetic post, you're thoughtful and kind. Regrettably, my soul is not a pearl but, thankfully, not "bought". But, I am in need indeed of mercy. And, yes, I have been in both conflicting & contradicting places - in 'Neither' is a good place to dwell, as neither leaves you dwelling in a peaceful valley.

This Clannad song is so sad & comforting - it is such a beautiful song!

I wish you peace & joy! THANK YOU for all your beautiful & comforting words. Slán anois! ;)

  • @musicartism Thank you for your nice Irish words. It IS a very nice song, but very sad. No matter who you are or no matter what you are, God wants you in heaven. I know it! Here's another one: Dawn of Beatitude— Begin with small acts Make them habitual Start with a smile It has its return Open a door Receive a smile Listen to troubles You’ll have none Absorb your soul In other’s souls Lose yourself “Enter into the joy” 11/12/11
  • @magpie4321 Go raibh míle maith agat/thanks a million. "Lose yourself", well, I think I've done that already (only kidding!), I know what you mean, THANK YOU!

Thank you for all your beautiful poetic words. Wishing you a lovely weekend. All the best to you!

  • @musicartism The King He rules not by might Nor conquest’s plight He rules in hiding In things not thought How we treat them Are judgments wrought; His rule is golden “How you treat the least Is how you treat me.” 11/19/11
  • @musicartism Your soul is precious and beautiful!

  • @musicartism Interesting. How did you find that? I've been looking everywhere for it (the meaning of the translation).

  • @westxlcr This is my own interpretation of the song. I listened to the lyrics (I know Irish) and I’m aware the song was composed for a film based on the conflict in the 6 northern counties (I know that too) (although the lyrics were inspired initially by an ancient Gaelic text originating in Galway, I believe).

Also, means life is transitory, the moon (dark times) and sun (sunny times) will go, just like him going and leaving his reputation behind him - life is transitory (some relief!)

  • @musicartism I see. This is my #1 favorite song, and it's good to get an idea of the meaning.

  • @musicartism Love, the oxygen of life: can't live without it!

  • @magpie4321 Mine is yeah, but you have do it in every second level school.

  • @pdawwwg96 Cool though

  • @pdawwwg96 From an American perspective, you are blessed to know it!

  • I agree, haunting theme, beautiful

  • What does it mean?

  • Harry is generally a nickname for Henry. The apostrophe denotes a possession. The word game in this context means a contest or sport. Therefore Harry's Game = The contest of Henry.

  • Thanks lancsy500, didn't know that

  • HARRY'S GAME came from an era when ITV were making classic television.

A brilliant work topped with Clannad's wonderful haunting theme.

Television and music dosen't get much better than this.

    One word; brilliance.

  • It summed up the troubles in a song.

I never understood Gailic but I understod this song.

  • Este tema fue sintonia e "diálogos 3" de Ramón Trecet en Radio 3 de Radio Nacional de España

  • Whats wit hthe fucking tone in the background? AGRH

  • its our tone tony blackburn

  • beautiful song.

  • when irish american aint bad enough......we get american city irish

  • Tune!!!

  • Must be Enya´s big sister?

  • Yep

  • I am Baltimore Irish. Yes. It stirs me. lads

  • This track fills my heart with a monotonous langour...

  • Failte!

    Ciamar a tha sibh?

Songs like this are beautiful example of Celtic heritage and I am damn proud to be apart of a culture that produces such touching peices of music.

  • Agree with jenideni hauntingly beautiful.

Has everyone her heard Celtic Woman?

    It's beautiful too.

  • such a haunting sound that leaves you with a feeling of having been here before....

  • we are legend us irish?

  • stupid comment, thats getin to full of your self

  • im from belfast, this still gives me goose bumps listening to it.

  • I love Almabot!

  • it was adapted into a trance song by Chicane, search Saltwater..

  • Love the song. Heard it in the movie Patriot Games and bought it on itunes that day.

  • I first heard this song when they used it for a volkswagon ad many years ago. I went out the next day to find a copy of it and thats when I got hooked on both clannad and their sister enya. What amazing voices.

  • The ad I heard it on was the Oxfam ad. Beautiful.

  • As a middle-aged Englishman who grew up watching "the Troubles" on TV news in the 70's, I now realise how little I really know Ireland. But when I saw Harry's Game on TV and heard this haunting tune, it brought home to me some of the pain and longing of the people of the Emerald Isle. It's still hard to believe that some sort of resolution has occurred, on Blair's watch, of all people!

  • As an American who's part Irish, English, German, Scottish, Czech and Jewish. My heart is particularly with the Irish. I greatly appreciate your kind words.

  • I've been a Clannad fan for years. I wonder what ever happened to them? Are they still recording?

  • Ten years after disbanding, the five original members of Clannad reunited on stage at the Celtic Connections Festival in February 2007 in Glasgow. They expressed their wishes to release a new studio album, but no official announcements have been made as yet. Moya, Ciarán, Noel and Pádraig embarked on their first UK tour in over 10 years in March 2008, starting in Gateshead.

  • Thanks e6o, that's wonderful news. I'd love to see them in concert someday, their brilliant. I hope they do start recording again, that's terrific news! It would be a shame to waste such talent, I know they've still got years of great music left. Clannad helped to bring Celtic music to se many people, and I'm glad to say they were a huge influence on me, musically. I'll always be a fan. Here's hoping they'll never say the "Journey's at an End."

  • It's spelled Maire but pronounced Moya. Enya who's actual name is actually Eithne Ní Bhraonain was with the group for a while as well. If I remember correctly the Ní is the feminine of the O as in O'Connor.

  • Steady on, it was just some copypasta from wiki!

  • LOL! Wiki does tend to be fairly accurate due to people being able to see somethings not so and edit it. But not always. It's probably more accurate as well as more thoro(I know that's not spelled right, can't get my brain to work right, right now, lol! than the news. Especially over here in the states!!!!!!!

  • maire, pronounced moyra actually

  • No actually, it's pronounced 'Moyra' in the south of Ireland but it is pronounced 'Moya' in the north and Donegal

  • remember the first time i heard this, it still gives me goosebumps, absolutely beautiful could listen to this and Enya all day

  • MOYA'S MY MUM

  • I loved this very moving song, which creeps under your skin even if you don´t understand the language -I am spanish- since I fist heard it. I was about 9. I am 34 now. I only found it about a year ago and recognized it instantly. Does this say anything for the song? Maybe this is why some people call it "haunting" :) Enjoy.

  • instead of debating this song just enjoy it wether your english irish scot welsh cornish or breton it's a great celtic song i love it ?

  • I've never understood why people find this song "eerie" or "haunting", to me it sounds harmonious and calm.

  • my god, do you really think this song is from a harry potter movie?

  • The song is very pretty and haunting and fits with the movie. (But what does it have to do with Harry Potter?)

  • wtf u on about u weirdo

  • watched these years ago when they came to Newcastle they were brilliant. gives me goose pimples everytime i listen to them.

  • Fol lol the doh fol the day

Fol the day fol the day

  • one of the most beautiful and haunting melodies i have ever heard. this was the song that got me into this kind of music, i love it, never looked back

  • What a wonderful song..amazing...Wow!

  • would be nice to see this lady and her sister enya release a song together some day, love this tune

  • So true :)

  • what a beautiful song. just wanna play it over and over

  • Clannad translates.Picture a monsoon in Kakdu National Park Australia.temp 38 degrees celcius, humidity 90 percent. You can see the grass grow before your eyes, thunder rattles off the escarpment like an air strike and the lightning puts your eyesight on pause for 5 secdonds.Clannad translates.

  • I'm 16 and English, I Would love to be able to speak such a beautiful language =]

  • there are 3 distinct dialects and they are very difficult. not like other languages where they understand each other. i will be delighted to teach you anytime. send meprivate message and i will help you and help you discover something about yourself. never forget we have the oldest building on the planet, that means people were here B4 everyone else.

  • yes you are probably right there but they did influence the language with words like pfingin(penny) and stuff like that. well i can't dispute it as i was not around back then so i can't prove or disprove and it doesn't matter as its only a bitta banter with me. thanks

  • Bloody hell. I totally agree with you. My love fello posum - In mean pom. xxxx

  • This is special to me. My god, you probably dont know about the history in Ireland. And f$%^& me, I know about it, I know about it I'm English. Yes, give me your banter!

  • In my mind shadow shed...

  • Clannad is magic. What's the language they're singing in? It is ancient Irish/Scottish? Or Gaelic? I've never quite known the difference between Irish and Gaelic... if anyone feels like, I'd be happy if you explained me:). I'm in love with this music and the language, too... :)

  • they are singing in a donegal dialect of irish, Scots gaelic and irish are the same language. only difference is that they spell their words the way they were spelt 150 years ago and we spell words modern like, a bit like afrikkan and dutch same language but over periods they evolve to different ways of speaking

  • WOW thanks a lot :) now I feel well-informed :)

  • Bits of it sung in "Donegal" irish and bits of it in English with a Donegal accent...south Donegal. Beautiful music. I have always loved Clannad.

  • condivido.

  • No, there is no English in this song. It's all Irish and some mouth-music. And Clannad sing in a North-West Donegal accent, not South Donegal!!

  • Ach well am from Donegal town, Lough Eske. So I would'nt describe her as north west, We always describe anyone from the Gweedore and that direction as south Donegal. From I was a child I would always hear them say "the day" in that clip.We have a very diff accent than Gweedore...Gweedores more lilty and we're more northern. But thanks for pointing that out..their mouthing sometimes sounds like English words. So are you a Gweedorean yourself?

  • That s weird I know...cuz ye are more north than us...yet ye speak the native tongue more.

  • People often say that italian or french is the most beautiful language in the world. I beg to differ when listening to Clannad ( altough this is propably ancient slang) Beautiful country and even better people.

What a excellent vibe this music brings across. Been a fan of clannad for almost 30 years an will be till the day that i day.

  • Clannad is GREAT! I love this relaxing music...I wish we had more of this kind of music in the USA. But for now, glad we can download it!!

  • If they want people to speak Irish, ban it. Then everyone will want to speak it and the language will be revived.

  • i walked down the aisle to get married to this song playing

  • speak yor own language? is that the one that people pretend they know...that sounds like a rat clearing its throat?...down south speak what you want...up north we'll go for that equall gibberish of uslter/scots :)

  • IS brea liom an amhran seo!!

  • hey great tune, very relaxing, i dont know if anybody remembers but this tune was sampled in a hip hop song in the late 90's - does anybody remember who it was by and what it was called?

  • hopefully this country will turn it around and start speaking the tongue on a regular basis. i get approached by foreigners all the time wondering why we don't speak our own language.. we will i believe this.. and i don't understand what that person sadie sexy meant by that Klinging to the ear..

  • She probaly meant Kling on. You know how strange those Norwegians are LOL's.

  • i meant that this language is beautiful.

  • are u irsh ?

  • No, norwegian. ;)

  • norway influenced our language big time due to the vikings with pfingin which is old norse word for penny. we use this in irish but because of EURO it is nomore

  • I took 4 years of it and lived in Dublin. Norway has nothing to do with the Irish language. It's mostly German (Geals), French, and Latin. For the record, Norway wasn't even populated when the Gaels and Celts populated Ireland.

  • the Vikings influenced everything on the having to do with fishing and commerce on the Gaelic language

  • i realise that, believe it not is is one of the easiest languages on earth to learn.. the accents and the grammar is difficult though..

  • Are there any easy language to learn?

  • depends where your from, if you are a German for example dutch, and flamish would be eaiser to pick up and learn rather than me an irish person trying to.. well in theory anyway

  • good thing i can speak gaelic... tis such a pretty language.

  • I wish I could speak gaelic.

    :(

  • irish language is not going to die. ireland is resurging the language there were less than 50000 spoke the language in ireland. but today there are about 1m people all as result of choice rather than suppression that the educational system in ireland decided to teach us and ws rejected naturally by the people. i disagree with the comment made by the guy.

  • The languange is klinging for the ear.

  • yes this has a title already but i think the movie because its a song about someones bad reputation.. so i reckon its called reputation as a guess...

  • Is Ghrá liom an canadh sin. Ceapaim go bhfuilean sé ar fheabhas. Is mise le meas Caoimhin cuir fios dom.. Go raibh míle maith agaibh

  • i grew up on the doorsteps of the bay in the video ,its bloodyforeland in donegal,,,you should come some time

  • It looks like the place I grew up in Norway. the greens fields that I call back home..

  • vh1classics has the "official" video. It's mostly scenes of a beach and ocean cliffs in Ireland (?).

  • beautyful sound and lyrics

  • Very funny.

  • Clannad is Gaelic for "family": you're thinking of gonorrhea, or clap. Time out.

  • Oh Dear Oh Dear how stupid am i, whoops i have found out that its clamidia i was thinking of.Sincere Apologies to Clannad. Are this group still together they are superb.

  • bookkeeper: Close. The Irish word for "Family" is the familiar sounding "clann". "Clannad" is actually an acronym for "Clann As Dobhar", meaning "the family from Dore".

  • And....Maire Brennan (Clannad singer) is Enya's sister! True!

  • It;s from a British TV series from the 80's called "Harry's Game". About an undercover SAS guy infiltrating the IRA - "Harry". Fing brilliant series....

  • is there a name to this song

  • Yes. It's called the above title of this video.

  • does a song like this not warrent its own title, rather than being a 'themetune'?

  • Yea good point, but the group were not expecting the song to be so successful, so it was just known as either 'Theme From Harry's Game' or 'Harry's Game'.

  • I love their music especially from Robin of Sherwood!

  • I think this was showing on the television during the scene in Patriot Games.

  • Yup, you're correct it was. Great movie and soundtrack.

  • Yes...Though I had the album before I saw the movie.

  • woooow.. i love this lovely peaceful music..

    :)

  • Such a beautiful song, shame the program wasnt so great.

  • Is it Moya singing, then?

  • Theres some crap comments on here......parasites !

  • i thought she was enya's sister?

  • it IS Enya's sister

  • This is one of the most original and beautiful songs ever! The Irish culture has produced the most beautiful and long enduring

music in the history of music, in my opinion.

  • "Must be awful to follow in the shadow of her sister"????

You think Enya could have sung this to this perfection?

  • NOT!!

  • The right singer is singing this song. Enya can hold her own but NOT on this!

  • What I was tlaking about is exactly that, many people doesn't now Clannad, but are fans of Enya. While their music is as beutiful as hers, if not even better. Before attacking a comment, maybe u should think about what it means.
