My JCM 800 sounds like that with the Master low and a hot pickup. I love putting it on 10 and lowering the preamp to almost nothing, using the EL34s for the bulk of the sound.
The tolex trim detail, the headboxes, the front and back metal amp panels, and the back head panel. Guts are the same from about 1978 to 1983 on the 2203.
The JMP is more plexi-like, it will have 4 inputs, 2 bridgable channels, may or may not have a master volume, no gain knob, 3 band EQ, and a presence knob.
The JCM is your normal JCM 800, 2 inputs, 3 band EQ, presence knob, gain knob, and a master volume.
i dont think it is. i mean, the older plexis had names. like mine is a 1987x. thats the name right. But the JMP's are very similar in tone to the plexi's.
its the jmp-1969 or wha ever and jmp-1987 x or other know as plexi super lead 100 or plexi 50 watt then u have the jtm-45 which was marshall's first amp and then the the mk-11 then the master volume then jcm-800 then 900 then 200 then jvm seire's at least thats what i think could be rong in some parts
they are all plexi but all a little bit different, the 1987x is a little bit more like a modded bluesbreaker jtm45, the jcm800 is more like the 1959slp modded. jmp mean jim marshall plexi? anyway whatever it mean its all good amps, some more for lead or bass or fire.
well, the earlier jmps were jumped panels, but when the master volume was introduced, they were put on those. The early ones were alot like plexis, except with a slight variation on the curcuit, so they were given a different name.
IMHO Attenuation is for Non Master VOlume amps . Just my two ent. You already havethe PReamp knob just let your eqing and volume kick it in the ars. Leave your pedal alone except for gain and level. DO NOT USE ANY OUTSIDE EQING E V E R from ANYTHING . ICant emphasis more on that one
The main benefit of using attenuation on a master volume amp is that it allows you to control the power tubes saturation, as opposed to hearing nothing but preamp tube saturation.
The one thing it doesn't let you control is speaker breakup, which is a pretty important factor for overdriven tones.
For a smaller/bedroom setting you'd probably want to drop down to 2 or even 1 speaker(s), as opposed to 4. Lets you drive the speaker(s) a bit more towards breakup.
An 8 or 16 ohm hotplate should do just fine. Another option for 100 watt tube amps is pulling two of the power tubes, which effectively cuts the wattage in half and reduces the volume output by about 1/10th.
If you do this however, make sure you pull either the two tubes in the middle or the two on the outside, as they are paired. Also note that this will alter the tonal character of the amp somewhat. But it's a free solution, and easily reversible (just put the tubes back in).
I live in los angeles haha...a few years ago there was one neighbor who would call the police but only after 10......now no one cares at all..especially on days where people are watching football games...they get pretty loud themselves.....I would give everyone who liked to play a music a house/neighborhood like mine if i could
No offense - but to me it sounded exactly like a valve amp at bedroom volume WITHOUT a hot plate - ie. weak tone (exactly like my amp does because I can't run it above volume 2). [Maybe just the camera mic filtered out all the tone - Ive recorded live gigs that sounded like crap when I replayed them on my PC]
The preamp and the master volume play a huge role with how these amp sounds.
I bet if you mess with those you'll hear what I mean...get a hot plate if you don't want to destroy the house though....
I remember before the hotplate I used to have my amp in my house instead of my back room and the whole thing would shake like an earthquake ....It'd still shake after the hotplate but alot less hahaha.
when a speaker is attached to an amp it is putting a load on the transformers i.e. 4,8,16ohm. a dummy load tricks the amp in to thinking it is attached to a real speaker. In the case of the hotplate it turns some of the volume into heat and the remaining goes to the speakers, this is how it enable you to crank the master and still get alright sounds especially for these older type amps.
playing at high levels does sound so much friekin better (on a tube amp solid states of course get worse with volume)! But, if you have neighbors you cant play at high levels hence the hot plate! lol
Great playing and nice vid. Would you recommend the hotplate for recording? I have a Diezel Vh4 and it is mega loud. But I still want to record at home and not have the ol neighbors complaining which they already are, but I wanna record at low volumes but still get the true diezel tone. Thanks man!!
Thanks a lot. The hotplate is a must for recording with some amps. I never played a Diezel so i don't know how it sounds at certain levels. Try it..before buy. this is my advice.
@michelebisi So do u have the JCM on 10? I've played with it on 10 many times without a power brake and it drove my whole neighborhood crazy but that cranked sound can't be topped
uhh, it lowers the amps volume. so you can crank the master on your amp and still have it quiet with the attenuator. so you get the tone as if it were cranked. but not the exact tone cause if you really crank it, the speakers will distort and you'll get a different tone. so there's a slight difference...
The "Hot Plate" or Attenuator lowers your output volume while it maintains the tone that your amp outputs on higher volumes. In other words you can max your amp and get a lovely sound without receiving death threats from neighbors.
Yes the Attenuator goes between the amp and the speaker cab. Beware of those 20buck ones on ebay that are supposed to hook up through a send/return on your amp. That is NOT a attenuator. It works like your volume knob on your guitar. Exec attenuator 'what is..' write up at the Tube Cube website. I don't work for them either. Just like mine a lot.
I have a 'Tube Cube Basic 80" attenuator, sold on ebay and at their store and it sounds three times as good through my JCM800 50 watt (a 1986,year) and cost me only 119 bucks. The THDs do have a LOT of compressesion and 'blanketed' sound just like others are saying. Unfortunately the THD models (like in this video) just went up by 30bucks and are now 320 or more at Mus Frnd online. More than I want to pay. SS
i can't stand my the sound of my Hotplate on -16 with my jcm800. I always thought it 'felt' so much better turning attenuation off and playing quieter. It's like taking a blanket of nasty glassy compression off the cab. Saying that though this clip sounds pretty nice, if a bit thin and compressed.

i konw you are right, the recording quality is terrible..but i own just my cellphone to record.. and i think that is better than nothing.. the video still show how a les paul and a good 800 could play..according to me
what if instead of putting out heat the put out 9 volt power so you can power pedals?

@daneswede2 - not quite true - any tube amp, despite pre-amp, will ALWAYS sound better all the way up with the tubes screaming.
The trick with a power soak is to find the right mix where you keep your tone but don't lose gain.
