Wow, what a soundstage. I've heard this song a zillion times but never so open and with instruments & vocals that I never knew were in the mix....great work...wish I could buy a copy of this version.
This is extraordinary work. You have carried this song back to how Brian intended it to sound, I believe. The hell-bent brilliancy and lunacy that marked the SMiLE period is revealed, and the song exists as more of a document of Brian's acid trips, rather than a bowdlerized single meant to prop up Capitol's fiscal quarter. Bravo.
I have this on a World Records set which were renound for using wrong versions and electric stereo..The track on WR states it is stereo which well, it sounds good and not as bad as some electric fake stereo, it sounds more 'wide mono'.
I would down load it but I cannot compare it to some nice varitions already here.
btw, you claim that they are indeed stereo vocals. Well, if the best studio engineers, and people who remaster The Beach Boys catalog who have total access to the tapes vault can not come up with a real stereo GV, what makes you think people will believe you?
The vocals are not real stereo. They are mono vocals that have been panned across the stereo spectrum. I worked extensively on GV making a so called stereo version by using tracks from the 30 Years boxe, PS Sessions box, Unsurpassed Masters GV box, and the Hawthorne Ca 2 disc set. No stereo vocals exist no matter what.
@twjr80 I think this is just a semantic issue. Subtle as it may seem, there are indeed different vocal parts in each ear, most audible in the bridge and second outro. This wouldn't be possible in a simple Duophonic-style panning. So, yes, it is real stereo, but definitely not *ideal* stereo -- what I think is what you're talking about -- and I have tried to be clear that I'm not presenting that fantasy.
@IHeartMikeLove Like I said before, I've listened to this with headphones throughout and hear no "stereo" vocals. Tell ya what, I'll record the audio from this video, throw it in Audacity, do some out of phase stereo and see what happens. If the vocals are indeed stereo and different on each channel, the by OOPSing the audio, it will cancel out what is in mono and leave the stereo parts.
@twjr80 OOPSing the chorus will take out almost all of Mike's bass vocal and leave the harmony vocals. This isn't possible with mono or fake stereo. I'll repeat what I said before: if you can't hear stereo at 1:52 or 3:18 -- where the separation is most audible -- your problem's not the video.
@IHeartMikeLove OOPSing did indeed take out all mono and did leave some vocals but you can definately hear the phasing, slapback echo (caused by duplicating something and not properly syncing up). and can even hear some 3rd party reverb added. I will say again, there are no stereo vocals on this video whatsoever. Good effort but please do not try to fool people by labeling a fan made mix that is not real stereo.
@twjr80 The sections I mentioned contain different vocal parts coming out of different ears. Phasing, echo, or reverb have nothing to do with it. You're absolutely right that it is not in the league of what could be accomplished with real multitracks, and I completely understand why it is not to everyone's taste, but whether or not it qualifies as stereo is not a matter of debate. It is real stereo. Period.
@IHeartMikeLove It may have them on different channels but it is not a real stereo version with real stereo vocals. It is easy to cut and paste vocals here and there. Anyone could cut and paste a vocal section on the left channel, then cut and paste a different vocal section on the right channel. After OOPSing, you can clearly hear this along with reEQing, added reverb, and the slapback echo caused by improper syncing of duplicate material.
@IHeartMikeLove. Excellent work. Well done. I agree with your thoughts. You're almost there! No doubt, the mixing boys at Capital could pull off an almost perfect stereo mix using similar tecniques, given how close your demonstration comes. Well done again.
This is quite a revelation. Particularly the harmonies on the chorus and bridge. You can hear the limitations best in the lead vocal, but those problems are nothing compared to what you've revealed! I've literally been waiting decades to hear this song in stereo. I can't believe the vocals that you've dug out of that mono track!
Linett is brilliant! and of course this music is BEYOND brilliant! ... wanna know what Linett turned his attention to after he finished "Smile,"? Up in the top search box, type EXPLORERS CLUB ANNOUNCEMENT.
How ungenerous and mean-spirited of you. Could you do any better? This person did this for free and for the love of the music. He didn't say it was perfect.
The first official stereo release will be on the upcoming SMiLE release - November 1st.
Track 22 of CD5 of the box set is "Good Vibrations (Single Version - Stereo)". Unfortunately you have to buy the full box set in order to get it. The regular version only comes with discs 1 and 2, and the full box set is $700 !
@Adema1226 I've read around that it's just the stereo backing track again, without vocals (it's called "Good Vibrations: Single Version Stereo Track" in the press releases). But: I would *love* to be wrong.
Carol Kaye in a recent interview said that it's just a myth that Brian burnt some of the SMiLE master tapes, but I'm beginning to think that the masters for Good Vibrations were in fact lost at some point. The stereo backing track that has been released is not the same instrumental track that's used in the final single version, and the song has never been remastered into stereo in all the years it's been released.
@Adema1226 Bruce Johnston believes that the vocal multitracks were accidentally trashed at a Columbia vault cleaning not long after the song's release, as they have not been seen since the original mixdown.
Also, quite a few sections of the stereo backing track are actually the same versions as the original -- I believe the "na na na" section at the end is the only completely different one. It's just hard to tell over 40 years of muddy mono goodness! ;)
it takes a real genious like the beach boys to come up w/ this song! real musicians can accomplish great hits just like this song!!! way to go brian wilson and the rest of the beach boys!!!
Best use of sonicWORX software i ever heard in extracting the individual harmonies, I can imagine you needed patience for this! very wel sounding overall, but as you said yourself it does sometimes not sound quite right (or slighty electronically modified even), still excellent job!
Thanks for posting , this shows the talents of one of rock and rolls greatest groups, at a an amazing level. Brian has a ability to layer tracs way ahead of the curve, im sure he would appreciate your efforts.
You, IHeartMikeLove, have created the best (if not the greatest) unofficial stereo mix of Good Vibrations I have ever heard. You have done a grand job!
@murcuryvapor sonicWORX Isolate to extract the parts, which were then mixed in Logic. You can't really do phase tricks, though -- that would require having stereo information to begin with.
@supah1337B I believe ya man! lol...I remember listening to Johny B Goode and getting so pumped....I used to imitate Marty Mcfly from Back to the Future when he did that solo on his back lol
@supah1337B haha that was actually the funny thing about that movie...he happened to be playing the same song that Chuck Berry wrote but the year they were in, he didnt officially "write it" yet haha.....that would be like one of us going back in time before the discovery of fire and bringing a lighter with us to burn wood lol
This is FANTASTIC!!!! I know all the purists insist that mono is the ONLY way to listen to classic albums (Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper, etc)..... but I am one of those people who like to sit in a dark room, listen to these songs intently, and point out all the nuances that quite frankly do not come through in mono. Stereo "opens up" the song, makes it sound light and free, and makes every nuance the original artist intended show through brilliantly.
@1olrocker - Understand where you're coming from although Brian's hearing problem necessitated him creating what he wanted us to hear monophonically and it's perhaps more a question of taste. It's easy to get carried away with embellishing the original and it's not always necessary to hear EVERYTHING that's going on but this is fun to listen to. It's a bit like using every color in a painting with the same degree of vividness. A magnificent piece of pop music which was so ahead of its time.
@oshawaxpress Actually, Brian's hearing had nothing to do with him doing all of the work in mono. Back then, the major market was AM radio, which was and still is in mono. Also, people with stereo record players at home could arrange the speakers in different ways to change a stereo record. Brian wanted the listeners to hear what he heard, thus he dubbed it all down to mono.
@TheKillerCliche, it's indeed called a theremin. There's footage available on youtube where you can specifically see the theremin be used in a live performance of this song.
@Droyd21 The instrument used was not actually a theremin but an electro-theremin aka as a Tannerin. It was created by Paul Tanner to be like a theremin.
