Adequate rotation from the hips and the two-beat kick are cornerstones of the long distance swimming (not to miss relaxed recovery, but the pull is not as important as the hand extension). Learning how to pull should be the last part of your learning process i.e. when you can easily swim any distance in water, and you developed a nice form in doing so.

if you dont rotate, and you dont lift your shoulder, then your arm will be under the water when you recover???
