  • Being this guy must be so awesome.

If I was him I would smile every time I saw myself in the mirror.

  • kony 2012

  • just grasp Albert Bartlett's bottle-bacteria concept and your opinion will change greatly.

  • This video is a good example of monetary-market system mind-lock.

Money is irrelevant. All that matters is - do we have the physical resources and the technological know-how to accomplish something?

We need to shed the archaic, tribalistic notions of greed and competition engendered by our current socio-economic system, so that we can all explore space together, cooperatively. THAT is the prize, not some monetary reward.

Check out The Venus Project and The Zeitgeist Movement. We can do this!

  • Space Elevators is the only solution for mass and cheap trips into space.

  • @saadasim Well that and hot fusion, but yeah, I tend to agree with you.

  • This man will change humanity

  • Why would anyone spend $100 million for one trip to orbit? I know it would be cool but how utterly selfish, I mean think of how many lives you could impact with that money. Many many people! It's the Jay Leno syndrome, let's invest in each other rather than see how many cars we can collect, especially in this economy.

  • @cipher2 we don't need to save lives... our planet is rapidly becoming overpopulated and after we reach peak capacity how do we decide who lives and who dies?

  • @AdioEmerica True I do agree with you there, the human sex drive is way too potent. Plus I'm sick of bumping into people all the time. Still though, that is a huge chunk of dough and for what? Hoarding money is disgusting, especially when there is so much that can be done with it. Put the money into something that benefits more than a couple hundred humans who are so rich they can spill out thousands on a frivolous venture. What do you do with your money, hide it up your butt?

  • @cipher2 haha i agree its an extremely greedy thing to do, and anyone who has that kind of money has obviously exploited the system. either way, I can honestly say im jealous of them

  • @cipher2 I doubt they have it under their mattress. People talk about people's net worth. That means that 99% of their money is invested in something productive. When money accumulates what you can see is that people get to invest in bigger and bigger ventures with greater impacts on people. Look at Microsoft for example. If you really look into it, just see how many lives it has brought into the 21st century over the past ten years.

  • @crudhousefull Me too,, why would they? I was near homeless when I posted my comment so to hear this assclown pitching a product that costs as much as feeding multiple thousands of dollars kinda bothered me. Human progress can still take place without marketing high price services such as this. As far as investors go, I may never understand why someone needs so much money, is it so they can have more stuff? For the record if ANYONE out there purchases this product then they ARE very selfish!

  • Petraki ? Mhpws afhses to mantri xekleidwto kai fygan ta gidia makria ? Stamata na koitas to feggari kai sygkentrwsou !

  • @hozayamz Explain, por favor.

  • I write a blog on Moon Colonization, and also just finished "Team of Rivals" on Lincoln and his cabinet the other day. So of course Diamandis mentions Seward (Abe's Sec of State) here, right? :)

  • damn i love living in the future.

  • It's magic and we should look out for it right? When we can move back and forth between the spiritual and physical realms through technology it won't be called spiritual anymore...

  • "Spiritual realm"?

There is no such thing as a soul, and I don't plan on dying.

  • I don't understand why people are turning this into an "either/or" kind of predicament. It's not like going to space excludes us from solving problems here on Earth. The very solution to our worldly woes could lay in space- he did open by making a valid case for the space making the 1st trillionaires.

Typically when you think that life is some black and white decision, it's wrong. There are shades of gray & a lot of behind the scenes effects going on as well.

I feel this man's cause is noble

  • some of you people fail to understand that there is MORE than enough money to go into space... permanently, AND feed the world... there is no moral dilemma here... the reason people are starving and hungry and poor is because most of the wealth on the planet is in the hands of just a few people who do not care if a billion people live or die... OH... and the pollution generated by launching stuff into space PALES in comparison to all the cows in the world spewing methane

  • many of the wealthiest and most powerful people in the world do care if a billion people live or die. it's just that they'd prefer if the billion people died. =)

  • Without being judgmental, but most of the philosophy behind modern space travel seems to be closely connected with a very American culture of private/individual accomplishments. I wonder how other cultures view the idea of space travel and exploration these days... How can we create a global space awareness?

  • going out into space just means that v are delaying our death. Even if v go out into space and start living there after a fev billion years this universe vould have expanded to an extent that it vill become cold and start to decay. then this universe vould die.(not more than 5 billion years :( )

  • dude whatever, we're gonna totally have computronium ultra efficient universe simulators within a billion years, fully simulating all of us forever (cyber heaven)...we need to be worried, because we possess the capability to wipe out all of humanity within a day or two (or next centuries), I think its worth it to have some sort of backup, in case intelligent life actually is rare in the universe. That seed bank shouldn't be in svalbard it should be buried in the moon! NO WAR—+ TECH DEVELOPMENT

  • So essentially the prize idea means the money paid out is much less than the money put in by those participating.

So the space ship may have cost 25m to design, build and test then the prize is worth 10m. Granted the publicity for any sponsors will give money in the long run, but that is only if they win.

I'm afraid I don' t have a better idea, but it seems like it will be hard to get people to work on projects where they are likly to lose millions and unlikely to win.

  • Cost 1-25 million to build - he didn't say how much the winners spent on their entry.

  • i love the guy's enthusiasm and vision and i agree that getting off earth is essential sooner or later BUT we should solve terrestrial problems first

  • Limiting ourselves to only a set of possible solutions wont help us.

  • John Young not Gene Cernan.

  • Very very interesting. His story is closely correlated with TED's session of Tony Robbins, of how to reach your goals.

  • This guy is a part of the small fraction of humanity I still have faith in.

    Good work, sir.

  • What the hell is wrong with you?

  • to me the only problem is the fuel its true we might get there its the energy we have to worry about. (that's my reason)

  • semiliteratedgod.

That's not what you said last night.

  • phenomenal - we need more people like him.

  • Very good talk.

  • Capitalism ensures that nobody gets too much power. Nature itself is founded on competition.

  • That is assinine. Get a job!

  • Let's explore the oceans before we take off for space.

  • Explore both at the same time =)

  • He looks like and almost sounds like Richard Lewis. Weird.

  • The man is a genius

  • "Agriculture can improve a ton."

I don't think so... I don't want more GMO's and more deforestation on this planet.

Even if we do all these things, it obviously still can't keep up with the exponentially growing third world population.

  • launch loops bitches.

  • His voice is similar to Murray Gelman's

  • Agriculture already have improved more than a ton in output per unit.

  • Peter Diamandis is an amazing human being! Thank You for all you are doing for all of us here sharing this human experience ;)

  • The space shuttle costs a billion dollars a launch? Holy smokes.

  • So we've plundered and exhausted a sizable chunk of our resources. Now we're going to start doing that in space?

Sounds like this guy is saying that there are bigger goldmine out in space and we should start plundering that too because it's an infinite source of wealth. "The first trillionaires will be made in space".

    Some moral imperative that is...

  • are you going to stop eating because a farm has expanded? We need resources to live, if you want to ignore this fact, and are still seeking a moral imperative that doesn't exist then live on another planet where nothing expands. Maybe find one that shrinks...

  • Unfortunely a lot of problems here. 1st due to the energy crisis, the most scientific, technical, monetary resources will be allocated to trying to fix the US and world energy crisis. 2nd America's recession & fiscal crisis will probaly make most Americans disinterested in space. 3rd Goverment's may not be the best way for development of space, however little capital in US will be available and the Chinese will take the lead in Space exploration. Chines are soon to be doing the 3rd manned flight.

  • Spaceship One is the shit!

  • This is the most interesting, and inspiring, TED talks I've ever seen. It almost makes me want to change career plans and go into the aerospace industry.

  • wukdar

    "complaining"

Is not very productive and it accomplishes little, but wastes an entire lifetime.

But on the other hand if you have something enlightening to contribute or a solution to any problem...I suggest do it the Nike way, and "just do it" and go get some X-prize. And once you do it, you hit 2 birds with one stone, get rich and help humanity at the same time with an ingenious idea or solution. Along with all the thankfull recognition.

    Oh how I love Capitalism.

  • wukdar

When you say "...and especially less capitalists." You just implied "Capitalism" is at fault, that says a mouth full or even volumes of where you stand on the socio-economic cartesian plain.

But even more alarming you want to quantify capitalist to a minimum...so tell me who do you want to be a capitalist and who not to be capitalist?

  • Im with you on this one. Not that exploring is wrong. But yea we have alot of problems down here to tend to first. Like poverty?

  • Really?

  • Apolo...Apoleon=Satan.What a buntcha noutchy noutchy...Prophet fufilling mofos..Sight*

  • absolutely fantastic, great talk

  • Yeah really!

  • Listening to this guy talk is exciting.

  • how do you know that a large collision with a meteor isn't going to occur in 3000 years? fossil records display 5 different occasions that 90-95% of life on earth was destroyed. this seems to happen every 15-300 thousand years. we need to develop the technology as soon as possable so that we can perfect the techniques. a large scale effort needs to be made in many sciences toward ways to inhabit new planets.

  • Anyone else played Spore yet? This was perfect timing for that, considering that's the big theme of the game is the galactic conquest ^.^

    *goes back to playing Spore*

  • Yea, its completely bad ass.

  • Okay perhaps I misunderstood. But I don't see how you're going to force people to have less kids unless you use force. There are already incentives to having less kids, like having more money. You can't just tell people to shrug off millions of years of evolutionary instinct to reproduce. The only way you could possibly get the population that low is by force. I just don't understand this anti-capitalist attitude. Capitalism is where food and medicine comes from. Forget it, this is silly.

  • educated people, it has been shown to lower the birth rate.

  • Gplex

You are correct when you say, "educated people, it has been shown to lower the birth rate."

BUT...when you add religion to the mix, dominating and controlling half of the worlds education systems, for eg. Islamic Madrases, and Catholic and Zionist Christian schools.

    1/G

  • Gplex

All the sudden these population demographics show exponential increases, for instance Islam I think I saw figures around 7% a year that means in 10 years Muslims will double from 1.4 billion to 2.8, Catholic figures are around 4% which means there figures will double in around 14 years.

So what do you think they are teaching those children? Have more babies for more mouths to feed with finite resources in a limited biosphere?

    2/G

  • Gplex

My conclusion education in the wrong hands is detrimental to humanity.

    3/G

  • yea, but now they cant destroy the knowledge we have, like they have in the pass....

  • Gplex

Once theocracies take root in governments education systems...it all goes down hill from there. free inquiry, discovery, and exploration unbound becomes suffocated. How many examples would you like me to give you? I am sure you are aware of some your self.

They tell you what thoughts to have and what thoughts not to have.

  • if the education goes down hill so does the country.. their will always be another country who will want to take up the cause...

  • Gplex

The goal is one planet one citizenship. More & more people in the world are beginning to realize this. But religions want to dominate with there own agendas, & the worst of them is Islam. All religions want to dominate how we think & what we think.

As long as there is religion, the progress & evolution of humanity is stifled.

Once all countries are on the same program of progressive enlightenment humanity has a chance. Our chances as a species increase if we live on more than one planet.

  • Yea I know, but have you every tried telling a fundamentalist that? Just do our best to educated, and have faith in humanity (faith lol... ironic isn't it) those who are uneducated will fall behind those who are, and eventually it will drive them to educate themselves... all we got to do is try to survive until then...

  • Gplex

Fundamentalist can be educated with soap operas (I am serious). There was a study done, and the three things that make people the most happiest is:

    1/ Have a spouse (husband/wife)

2/ Have a warm social network (friends that you can be open and free to speak your mind without fear of judgment or persecution))

3/ Watching a lot of soap operas (don't laugh but this is a world wide true phenomenon)...I am sure you have your favorite TV series that you watch regularly.

    1/F

  • Gplex

For instance in some African countries the UN and NGO's were and still are evolved in educating people through Television soap opera series about STD's, AIDS, contraception, whether the world is flat or round...if you get my meaning.

Therefore radical Muslims can also be deprogrammed, and reprogrammed to start thinking for them selves instead of others thinking for them.

    2/F

  • You're right about reprogramming. I think the most important thing is to isolate the person from the brainwashing, e.g. attending church, reading holy books, and prayer. Sounds terrible to say people shouldn't pray, almost like Thought Police, but really, it is just a kind of self-brainwashing. I was pretty much a fundie at one time, until I quit church, stopped prayer, and started reading real books. A very rude awakening ensued. Painful, but very necessary.

  • zeldagoblin

Yes you are correct in saying, "isolate the person from brainwashing." And also "Thought Police" is Orwellian and it is what we are trying to avoid. Islam is 100% Orwellian.

The person has to be able to find them selves on there own terms, & we not tress pass against there own free will. The only way this can be done, is by constantly challenging religion, and dogmatic cultures with questions that force them to think on there own. A good question is like a leaking crack in a dam.

    1/A

  • what about food and medicine that the tribes have that doesn't come from capitalism ! peace

  • "what about food and medicine that the tribes have that doesn't come from capitalism"

They're both lower in quantity and quality. Nothing produces more and better food and medicine than scientific capitalistic societies. Name a non-capitalistic society that has food and medicine that's even half as good as ours. I hope you don't say anything to do with chi or magic beans or something.

  • Russia.

  • oh and Enland and Canada their both Monarchies.

  • also Spain and Australia, they are also Monarchies.

  • I just found out they all use capitalism.

  • zanussi303

If you are so concerned about them, why are you wasting your time here?

Shouldn't you be doing something more productive with your time to help them?

  • theinquisitor

Stop the hand outs, provide conditions where if they want to help them selves they can, then poverty and pop. explosion ends.

    Options:

    1/ Do not work...I die.

2/ Spend all my time making babies they & I die.

3/ Spend more time working and acquiring a non-religious education (delusion can't feed you no matter how hard you prey) to be able to get a better job...no time for sex...smarter because I know better...end up with less kids...more leisure time with money...life is great.

  • wukdar, I don't even know where to start getting outraged about this. You talk about the evils of capitalism and yet you want a fascist dictatorship where the government decides how many children you have can. Do you really think the government should have that much power? How are they NOT going to abuse that? If people aren't free, they are slaves. You don't have the right to put people in chains just because they might hurt themselves. This arrogant delusion of superiority is just astonishing.

  • everyone!! watch this in high quality.. HUGE DIFFERENCE!

    type: &fmt=18

right after that url and itll go to HQ!~

  • BRILLIANT

  • "we need less human being on the planet, and especially less capitalists"

I'm confused, I thought you were opposed to the children dying of starvation. What do you think will happen if those kids have enough food to eat? They'll survive to reproductive age and have more kids and then there will be even more people.

How would you like to reduce human population? Wholesale slaughter or just forced sterility? How about we just use our resources better and find a way to feed everyone?

  • theinquisitor

    Solution...China's one child policy.

The problem is religion. Most of the population influx is occurring in religion, Islam (bent on trying to conquer the world - total irrational) is at the top of the list, then the rest (trying to counter Islam - also total irrational but rational to the point that they do not want to be dominated by Islam) Hindu's, then Catholics and Zionist Christian and Jews.

Voluntary sterility is also an open option.

  • it is a matter of time before earth is no longer habitable for human life. space is something we need to explore and learn now, so that we can find a new home for the future. that is if you are trying to get the human race to survive. i realize some people don't want the human race to survive.

  • Cool BMW at the end!

Thanks to BMW for its sponsorship of these TED videos.

  • lol you're right it won't stop an asteroid from hitting the earth, but if humanity has colonized the moon, or mars, or any other planet, whenever an asteroid hits the earth and kills everyone here, humanity will be able to push forward instead of being annihilated.

now complaining about genuine attempts to improve the overall quality of human life in the universe like this video is just ridiculous.

go complain about something worthwhile like the 10 billion the US spends everyday on war.

  • brilliant.

  • "How many children is dying in the world every day because of lack of vitamins? I am sure that tey will not fly into orbit"

How many human beings will die if an asteroid hits and destroys all life the planet?

It is our responsibity as members of the human race to work to ensure the survival of our race.

While I agree there are millions of people dying around the world for bad reasons, exploring and colonizing space is very important.

The US spends 10 billions a DAY in the middle east

  • wukdar, did you notice that later on in the video he mentioned a number of other prizes that will be used to motivate advances in other areas such as environment, education, medicine and poverty? This kind of approach could motivate development of revolutionary methods of growing and distributing high yield crops that could feed billions.

People have been dying of starvation for as long as there have been people. Technological progress is what changed that, not what caused it.

  • There's a documentary on this subject on google video (search for: horizon space tourists), which includes Peter Diamandis and many of the other competitors for the X prize. I think the idea of having similar prizes for other technological problems is an excellent idea.

Also, how cool is it that the first SpaceShipTwo class ship will be called the VSS Enterprise?

  • Haha that was awesome!

  • awesome stuff!

  • "The only home we got." You're right, hopefully that will change, and it's clear they already have that in mind. What if something happens to this home? Just because we can change the world for the worse doesn't mean we can always protect it.

  • Do you see? I've got 8 minus on my comment. "Don't burn so much fuel" And no we can't always protect the earth. Not even from it self.

But doesn't it sound like a new travelcompany?

Like trip to space now only 99.9$!!

6+ billion people on earth.. Just figure out the amount of fuel and money it takes to send up a few thousands.

Put the money in more science instead. Or help with food and put clothes on starving children.

Am I the only one thinking like this?

Dont get me wrong love space!

  • "fuck them, the Earth is overpopulated, fuck the starving children and their fucking parents too"

And you have titled your channel "Love & Peace" ??

How about you go toss your mothers sallad tacobender! F OFF

  • We could start of with get rid of fascist like you.

  • I mean If that is what you think.. Why don't you just kill yourself? Help the world out a bit..?

But you won't do that, you think innocent third worlders should die instead.

    So STFU

  • Fine lets agree to disagree.... This obiously doesn't lead to anything else than cussing eachother out..

Sooo I leave it at that.

  • Here we go again.. whatever.

  • You have problems, get better help. And stop bothering me.

  • Now you talking bs about my parents? Real mature.

Just leave me alone.. you are pathetic.

  • Read all my comments before saying ignorant shit like that..

Now go swallow and knife you stupid inbread bitch.

  • hey inbred, why did you create so many sock accounts?

  • Well it has to partly sound like a travel company because you are not going to get investors to pay for it if it won't come back to them. Feeding and clothing starving children doesn't pay.

  • This man is a freaking hero.

  • This is so awesome. Competition, baby.

  • Inspiring. We need more people like that to take the message on board and commit to the greatest challenges that we face.

  • Why point that out?

But yea agree with you exellent talk so far. Looking foward to the rest of it.

I don't think we gonna get to the closest star in a long long time.. Its like 10000 times further away than the outer planets of our solar system.

    Maybe there are other ways..

  • sorry but doesn't matter
