  • Well done!

  • dr who kicks ass seen every episode since the very first doctor from the 50s waiting for season 7

  • @joebionekenobi Slight typo. 1963.

  • This guy is awesomee!

  • This is fantastic. Brilliant. Cool.

  • tabs or exterminate!

  • I've just found this and i think what you've done certainly in the first half of the video captured the near enough the "exact" sound in the way that Dr Who fans actually hear in their own heads when they hear the theme. I'm not sure which version of the theme you are replicating but i'm suspecting given your explanation that it's a version from the 1970's episodes?

  • @sykeassai thanks, that's an interesting thought. To be honest though I think it would have been the original version of the theme that I took this from, which was then performed as you hear it here, rather than keeping to a decade-specific style.

  • did they use a theremin on the original? or a singing saw? I always thought it was a saw, but now i'm not so sure.

  • @TheCrapocalypse

    watch?v=7B7hAT1BbGY

  • @TheCrapocalypse the Delia Derbyshire video is very interesting, though it doesn't address the details of how she worked. I discuss it a bit in the description to my effort but I'm not sure its clear precisely how each element of the finished product was originally generated, though I think you'd find that as it was not recorded in real time no actual 'normal' instruments were involved. May well be wrong though!

  • @JacarandaRock is it okay if i use this?

  • @boupbinkproductions what would you be using it for, and how? Best make a direct message...

  • @JacarandaRock oh srry i wanna use this for my lego doctor who series and mabey for some music for a trailer, is that ok?

  • @TheCrapocalypse "No actual 'normal' instruments were involved," would be an accurate description, but wikipedia has a very detailed description of constructing what constitutes to the first commercial electronica by some standards. Recordings on tape were literally spliced together (cut into pieces, one note-equivelant in size each) and mixed together for the theme. If it wasn't for YT's anti-link scripting, I'd drop it here, but it's not hard to find and a recommended read.

  • @debadano

370 people disagree with you. go to your corner and carry on crying.

  • I'm afraid your guess as to what may or may not be my musical interests is rather wide of the mark.

I expect a lot of people have their own definition of classic rock; but since its a mildly distorted guitar sound, a generic rock drum style, note selection heavily favouring pentatonics (not that this was anything to do with my input), and overall 70s-ish approach, I'd be surprised if it was too far off, and close enough to give an idea to folks considering watching it....

  • ... Many of whom have the decency to be polite in their reaction.

  • @debadano you are one serious dumbarse yourself. Grow up.

  • @debadano No its not the same but this one ROCKS!!! Get it cause its a Rock cover? Ok...

  • just Genius !!

  • My mind is officially blown.

  • this is kick ass, man !

  • ITS AN ELECTRIC GUITARDIS!

  • I LOVE IT!!!

  • Just perfect!

  • That was AWESOME!!!!

  • I really like this. Is there somewhere I can download an mp3 version of it?

  • this should be the next doctors theme tune

  • This is FANTASTIC! You wouldn't happen to have an mp3 available, would you?

  • The Master disliked this twice.

  • Whoa, not expecting that!

    So cool!

  • 1 dalek and 1 cyberman saw this.

  • OMG I smiled the entire time!

    This is awesome!

  • Amazing.

  • Woah, what a mind job.

Wonder what would happen if this was integrated into the Howell theme somehow?

  • Dunna da dun dunna da dun - dun dun dun dun! :D

    You ROCK!

  • this combines my two favourite things rock music and docotr who!!!!!

  • You sir, are awesome. =)

  • this is brill!

  • Holy Shit. That was awsesome!

  • mega like!

  • Brilliant!

  • Topman, I liked it a lot !!, sounds very clean, very British....

  • wow kick a..

  • Never heard of Patrick Eggle....there's a lot of custom guitar shops here in the States. I love great craftsmanship and am making my own Tele - very unique with belly and forearm cuts, Swamp Ash with machine-screw "bolt on" flame maple, compound radius neck. It's going to be great! Thanks for the info and take care!

  • Awesome.

  • It's fine...just agonizingly boring. Beautiful guitar but you should have gone with double-locking. Take that silly whammy bar out if you aren't going to use it! Add some Satch / Vai flair to this and then you really have something. It may be correct but who said something so rote is pleasing or even fun? Liven it up some! Just my opinion.

  • @DickLodge68 thanks for your counter-blast to the majority view (!) If I'd gone for a Satch/Vai style it would hardly have been a 'classic rock' version. And for your info, the trem arm is locking so even if you don't use it the tuning is more stable and you can palm mute without it changing the pitch.

I look forward to your livened up version. Really!

  • @JacarandaRock If I had your equipment - gladly! You are telling me you cannot remove the tremelo arm? Whaa? It either screws in or is quick-release. Regardless...should have gone with the locking nut. Hard to tell it's a PRS? The flame top maple looks delicious in green. It's a beautiful guitar! Oh...yes, you're right....it would be "classical rock" but c'mon! You have the gear...no harm in embellishments! I have shitty gear and would rather sound like crap with passion than great yet boring.

  • @DickLodge68 I respect the spirit of your observations but you are working with partial information. The guitar is a Patrick Eggle Berlin Pro (c1996). The trem unscrews of course, making the bridge unfixed. I may have been recording something before or afterwards that needed the trem, why take it out just because I wasn't going to use it in one track? Lastly; it was recorded partly for the benefit of my students working on it, for whom its degree of liveliness is about right.

  • @JacarandaMusic Okay, that's fine...I didn't mean to offend - I speak what is on my mind! It looks like a standard "floating bridge" maybe I am wrong. I love what Ibanez has done with their quick-release and ball bearing bridge....it's fantastic! Just don't take it out if you don't need to but it's there! I didn't realize this was for your students. I'd take a different approach that's all.

  • @DickLodge68 You really have no idea what you are talking about.

  • @deltron2007 Oh? Why do you say that?

  • Did you have a loop pedal going?

  • @crashmin64 no, just a basic multi-effects giving a Marshall type rock sound.

  • My speakers just exploded from awesomeness

  • @TehOrkyMan oooops! Sorry! ;-)

  • Whoa!!!! Awesome! I love what you have done here!

  • Solid.....

  • how does this not have more hits? Its amazing

  • @ButterflyofOceans ... er well, tell your friends! :-)

  • I think I just had a nerdgasm.

  • ROCK ON!!!

  • Let's here it for sustain! Awesome!

  • This is so cool, I can't stop watching this vid

  • i need those tabs! :(

  • Man you are so dedicated! This is amazing!

  • The two who didn't like this are dalek

  • amazing!!! my son loves doctor who as well, and he trys to play the theme on his keyboard and hes nearly 3 haha im going to attempt to try this now haha

  • Next on BBC-1 the Generation Game....

Excellent rendition of a classic theme tune. Sack Murray Gold with his strings and choirs and appoint JacarandaRock, now!

  • T'is my theory that every song played with a brass band sounds classy and timeless, and possibly better than its original. T'is also my theory that any music on an electric guitar sounds awesome and rocks. think about it and try it out if you can, you'll be amazed

  • @MrAnimelvr interesting theories, or perhaps more, your experiences? Certainly if you up the gain and play it loud on an electric you tend to get rock!

  • can You Play The Peter Howell theme?

  • @ges295 do you mean the Howell version of Dr Who? Probably, but its not that different...is it?

  • @JacarandaRock The main part of the Howell theme is it's played in a different chord. I believe they move up from C to F#, I really dont know my stuff. I beleive the haunt changes to D->C# from CB. That and Howell#s theme has some really nice little gimmicks that make it sound epic. Thats how it seems to work on my synths. ^^

  • @Alexoneil no from E to F#

  • @ATV642 Isnt E keff's one?

  • @ATV642 oh yeah, I'm thinking wrongness D

  • That was cool

  • omfg that was amazing

  • Awesome!

  • One word: AWESOMEEEEE

  • Superb rendention of a classic, timeless theme!

  • The original tune is the best. The new one is kinda wierd

  • Damn this is awesome!

  • Fantastic!

  • Amazing! Could you please give me the tabs ??

  • That was absolutely brilliant. Guess Im throwing out the tabs I printed of ultimate guitar, because they are nothing like what you just played. And Its great to see no whammy bar dive bombs used at all, good old vibrato.

  • @him666perth my version is just how I felt like doing it, there's nothing authoritative about it. I think its a great tune to do in your own way, which is how I encourage people to do it, and learn stuff in the process...you'll certainly learn a whole lot more than just reading amateur tabs from some website.

  • Cool!

  • Never mind, found it!

  • It would be great to have a tab. This is the best version by far that I have seen.

  • could you please give me the tabs for what you playing on the guitar.

  • @Tomhof09 Hi, I haven't made tab for it but will be posting a demonstration lesson before long.

  • @JacarandaRock Oh my god, please do lol. Been looking for a video that explains how to play this theme for ages.

  • OUUUUHH YEEAAH VERY GOOD!!

  • awesome mix and i like the deep added base you put into it, this theme rocks like never before. Do u have an MP3 version of this for download?

  • Pure win.

  • I still have nightmares concerning "The Pyramids of Mars" 35 years after it was first aired!...and who could forget that hand reaching for the tardis in "Carnival of Monsters" ...

...and of course, the dreaded Drashigs!!!...

  • This is pretty fantastic. You're a great guitar player. I'm curious, though, did you program the bass or actually play it? It sounds like it might be programmed to me, but it's hard to tell.

Anyway, if you're interested at all, I have an acoustic version of the new series theme song on my account, but just be forewarned that the quality pales in comparison to yours.

  • @GreatJuja, you are both too kind and too modest. Anyways, the bass guitar is a real bass guitar (recorded DI), as are both the other guitar parts of course. The drums are sampled (EZ Drummer).

  • Can you please make a video of how to play I can't get a good view. I've been trying to learn this song since I started playing six years ago and I'm good but I've never figured out how to play this and it would be great if you could help out.p.s. All the tabs out there are rubbish

  • @goodwilldaniel thanks for the prompt; I actually filmed a lesson, along with one for Bond and for Simpsons; unfortunately I messed the Dr Who up and so need to get round to re-doing it.

    Cheers...

  • LOVE IT!

  • By far, the best cover for that song. Your version is epic

  • First at all let me say: bravo! And now my question, what amplifier are you playing?

  • @MrPanzerful , thank you.

Ref amplifier, I wasn't using an amp, I was (to save time) using a Digitech RP 200 multi effects pedal straight into Logic. I can't remember the exact settings but it was probably set to a generic Marshall-type rock amp sound.

  • Best cover Ive found

please post a tab or a lesson

  • @NickBurnside You are very kind. A lesson has been filmed, I need to get round to getting it sorted out for utube!

  • @JacarandaRock please make one soon :) i need to learn it fanx

  • Wow...this is excellent! Seriously! This was fantastic ! Could be used for the actual theme tune - its brilliant! =P

  • @DistantDreamer93 I agree!

  • Brilliant!

  • Wow, didn't know Christopher Bidmead could play guitar! Some sort of block transfer music, no doubt!

  • Oh do I look like him or something? ;-)

  • Lol sorry! A little bit from the early 80s yes! Excellent video btw.

  • i love classic rock and i love doctor who! great reimagining! :)

  • Really very good. 10/10.

  • That...was so wicked. Love it.

  • Wow, this is really awesome! Better than the other rock remix video on YouTube. Brilliant.

  • Very kind of you Hazz :-)

  • can you possibly make a video teaching this?

it will earn you another subscriber if you did :) lol

  • Hi again well its in the plan. If you sub anyway you'll find out when I do ;-)
