These cars are gorgeous and I love the look of them, but I hear that the 80-81 turbos should be stayed away from. They say the turbo burns out eventually because of no intercooler and has sever detonation. Is this true?
@sniped101 I pulled all the parts of a nice rear ended 1977 t/a with a 400/4 speed I got for 1000 bucks. Tranny was already rebuilt, but I rebuilt the motor
@1981turbota what was the timing advancement on the 301 i have mine at 6 and it is not responsive at all i worked it all up and it was running great till i put the holley spread bore double pump with an inch spacer and advanced it more it makes over 300 rwhp and 450 ft lbs of torque but i cant get it to go with out pedaling it or hitting the gas slowly. it has 17 lbs of boost im puzzled as to why its like this. the idle is really smooth and nice but thats about it
sick. i have a 1980 firebird that had a v6 but i changed it to a 1978 lt-1 corvette engine , 5.7 liter with mods, check out my channel at theblackartsviper
@MegaTronn the 301 turbos are definately a rare enginem but their potential is limited due to the siamesed intake ports. If one was to take traditional pontiac heads and fabricate a sheet metal intake that would be a sweet runner.
Ive put a 400 in it, but am going to clone the HO turboforce turbo setup to keep it a "turbo" trans am, but with alot more power
Pretty slow.. when my car was running stock it would run a high 15 sec 1/4. Again the second gen F body was heavy and the amount of emissions stuff was excessive. A turbo 4.9L v8 making a whopping 210 hp.
It was a super heat soaked starter, the turbo crossover is 3/4" away from it.
Thanks for the compliments guys. Unfortunately the 301 turbo engine let go when I got greedy with boost. It did run a low 14 sec 1/4 at 13 PSI, not bad considering the technology ad weight. The car has a 400 and a 4 speed now, but I want to rebuild the 301T with a few tweaks.
@1981turbota You took out the 4.9 and put a 400 in?
I was kind of curious about wondering how easy it would be to take out a 4.9 turbo and replace it with a 400 / 455. I wasn't sure if it would be hard, since some Trans Ams came with those engines originally.
Did you have any hard times / good success's with your engine swap?
@deadkid9110 the swap was really straight forward. I had problems with the exhaust, you will have to go to a new system. Most of the accessory brackets fit too.
haha i can hear the turbo, it makes it sound kinda like a deisle when the revs wind down haha, pretty cool...and id love to see what one of these can do when rebuilt to today's specs (especially since these were reportedly de-tuned by Pontiac to eliminate the turbo noise)
well 67-69 it looked way different it had one piece chrome bumper ,and two square headlights on both sides. 70-76 had the bumper painted with the car and a single head light, and came with sd455. 77-78 had a newer look with a front end that looked like a beak in the middle with connected square headlights. 79-81 had a different style one piece taillight and a different front end.
i dot care about ppl saying the turbo 4.9 L T/A waz a gutless motor cuz i beat thos dam ricers evry week with my 1981 turbo T/A F***** rice burner go fart ur way home lol
shes a beauty. Id like to see more of her! i also have a 301 but its n/a. I post on 301 garage everynow and then. Great website is you don't already use it.

tom95stang 2 years ago
How can u tell the difference between the trans am and the other models? and was the trans am the only model with the bird?
handymann3 2 years ago
shaker hood or turbo hood, flares, blacked out taillights on 79-81, diamond dash panel, wheels
Trendyrapslut 2 years ago
was the trans am the only one with the bird though? and did all trans ams have the bird anyways?
handymann3 2 years ago
yes and yes but there was a bird delete option.
