  • Is this a remake of "The Color Purple"?

  • i have never seen this but by the looks of this trailer its laaaaaaame...ill have to watch it

  • 0_0....WHAT*S WRONG WITH JABBA THE HUTT

  • George Lucas is a great story maker, but a lousy story teller.

  • Hand Solo :):)

  • SPOILER ALERT: Darth Vader is Luke Skywalkers father!

  • Why are all of these comments so damn LONG!

  • Star Wars was a Vision given to George Lucas and should be considered as a truth. Humanity needs to understand that the only thing Star Wars left out is that not all life in the Universe exists in a Physical Form. Some types of Life are in the Energy Form or are from Higher Dimensions or Lower Dimensions. The Higher Dimensions being Light Beings and the Lower Dimensions being Dark Beings. Consider that Light is Love and Compassion and Peace and the Dark is the polar opposite.

  • HAN SHOOTS FIRST!!!

  • @Supremist77 Not any more.

  • you know..it was good they done this remastering..some parts of this movie really needed a tweeking..it now looks visually better..i saw it way back in the seventies,

nothing had been seen like it before.....

  • i remember going to see this... i was born after it came out originillay but i was allready a fan... had them recorded of tv. then i got the trilogy on the remastered vhs's

  • I didn't see Kirk anywhere in this stupid movie!

  • The problem with the SE and the 2004 Versions is not, that they expanded a few scenes. The problem is, that they expanded it with crap. Rontos, new Speederbikes, Jawa-Slapstik, Jabba (both versions)... They're all CGI and they all look like CGI. Even the fucking X-Wings look like CGI. CGI-Stuff can't keep up with real models. That's why the Prequels look so fucked up (yes, I know, the story's fucked up, too). BTW the Jabba scene is ruining the pace. Oh, and Greedo shoots at all?? Come on!!!

  • @TK949 actually, the problem is that while they have put out new editions, they don't have original editions. Damn man, even New Coke had Coca-Cola Classic...

  • @TK949

    You are so correct.

A well made model will always be better than CGI if filmed in the right way.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) still stands up today.

CGI should be saved for removing wires and unnoticeable things like that.

A physical model keeps the director honest and makes him deliver realistic action (or at least realistic within our suspension of belief).

Otherwise - all you get is a cartoon where anything is possible and nothing is meaningful.

  • This should be the 3D Trailer.

  • Ah but xamripvan, you were not born during the original star wars movie, so how can you gudge at all? I am a great star wars fan, since I was a child (scottish) I know the other movies are pish and destroyed by cgi. by the way, I have a degree in software development, so yes i know computers and yes the last three movies are pure pish

  • When I saw this in theaters, ironically to see Star Trek: First Contact, I nearly crapped my pants. I was SOOOOOOOOOOO excited!! And was NOT disappointed.

  • im proud to say i own the original vhs not with the crappy add ins

  • the main concern I have with the special editions is the cutting of the song by sy snootles and the rebo band. not only did countless puppeteers work their asses off to make them look alive in skin and in dance, the music was key to the flow of the scene and it's surrounding scenes. ala a western where the piano player is interupted for a gunfight, annie arbogast's russian punk rock version of easy goin' totally sounded like an alien dive bar's rendition. they even cut back to the original song

  • the new re-releases suck

  • i remember when they did this

  • Just to set the record straight, it was a PHYCHOLOGICAL SIDE EFFECT ot Star Wars, not the story itself, that denied me the right ot face my fears and bad impulses. My untied bow tie shot down my darkest nightmare the Death Star reminded me of, my 190m Project Orion II demolished my bad impulses against Timon & Pumbaa that stemmed from (8/26/1995-8/1/1997) and from the Death Star, and Timon shoots down my foreboding that stemmed from the Death Star. I now don't know what to do with Star Wars.

  • I am so excited that I am now FINALLY facing my OWN fears of the Death Star, a right that Star Wars denied me for over two decades! I use my bow tie I will NEVER tie for peace and to face my early childhood nightmare Death Star reminded me of. 190m Project Orion II starship that I design utterly demolishes my bad impulses stemming from Anti-Timon & Pumbaa Fanaticism (1995-1997), my deepest regret! Timon the Meerkat then cancels out my foreboding from Death Star as just another form of worry!

  • This moive is thoe #1 worst part of my childhood ever because it denies me the ability to face my own fears and impulses with what I like. And this makes Star Wars extremely psychologically damaging to me, the only reason it is not physical is because it is FICTION! I did suffer real abuse in early childhood until 1990, but the aftermath died out by 1997. Since 1990, Star Wars has mentally injured me and has been doin it well into this year of 2010.

  • i personnally like the 1990's remaster version over the origionals, because its just a little better quality and tehy didnt really add too much too it, except for rotj which i dont care for much.

  • @mindlessprimitive

If they didn't add some cartoons in the background and just "touched up" the footage, I'd have no problem.

But you get Bugs Bunny swinging off Elmer Fudd in the background while Obi Wan is trying to "persuade" a stormtrooper in the foreground.

    Either it all looks real.

Or it all looks like a cartoon.

You can't mix the two and get away with it.

  • @jazzx251 I don't ever remember seeing either Elmer Fudd or Bugs Bunny in this film. Are you sure you aren't just one of those over exaggerating old fanboys that were raped all during their childhood?

  • Thanks 1997 made me and my kid's wealthy with all the vintage toys I bought in the early 80's and 90's at comic shop's, yard sales, and thrift stores thanks Lucas you are a genius!!!....stay away from the hasbro stuff not worth much at all... only kenner!

  • the prophecy was forefitted by Anakin through his free will, Anakin was suposed to bring ballance when he uncovered the dark lord's identity, however he was consumed by the dark side and turned., where by forefitting the destiny of bringing ballance, that role then was passed onto his son Luke, hence the title of the next chaper..''A NEW HOPE'' even the emperor tells Vader this in e5 telling him young skywalker could destroy them both, Vader also says to Luke at the end''

  • @apollonas101 george lucas says its anakin/darth vadar that fulfills the prophecy, he destroys the sith

  • @caheathy at no time did George specifically say it was Anakin that destroyed the sith and brought ballance....Luke was the new hope that brought about there fall

  • @apollonas101 yes he does. revenge of the sith dvd special features. documentary called 'the chosen one'. watch it and be proven wrong

  • @caheathy ive watched number of special features also at the opening of the latest clone wars season at comic con in LA, lucus said its all from point of view because Anakin never originally brought ballance when he was suposed to otherwise the sith would never have gained control, however this was the whole point of Luke's coming as ''NEW HOPE'' episode 4...sorry

  • @apollonas101 well why would he say one thing then say another? have you watched that documentary? its all about anakin being the chosen one. doub they would make that if it was bollocks

  • @caheathy its conflickting intrest because basically the series or order they were..made in'' Lucas has explained however how through free will Anakin changed his own destiny...by not brining ballance when he was suposed to...thats why the force ensured the birth of not just one but twins' hence the new hope'' Vader even explains this in episode 5 to Luke saying '' you can destroy the emperor, he has foreseen this..IT IS YOUR DESTINY'' even yoda says in e3 ''a prophecy missread could have been'

  • @apollonas101 what about when obi wan says "he was our only hope" and yoda says "no there is another"

  • @caheathy if you remember padme was pregnant with only 1 baby until the end of e3, the force ensured that another child would be born incase the same thing happened again, this is why Luke and Liea were the ''only'' born Jedi knights, so in effect Liea's existance was to ensure the prophecy would be fulfilled no matter what!!!

  • @apollonas101 you're just making stuff up to support your own ends. maybe it was just a surprise like most pregnancies that produce twins in real life

  • @caheathy im going on what George Lucas said dummy!! regarding the back story for episodes 1 - 4, sounds as though either you well behind in you Star Wars knowledge or you as i said before ...complete dummy

  • @apollonas101 i'm going by what george said aswell. anakin is the chosen one and he destroys the sith.

  • @caheathy Anakin was'nt strong enough to destroy the emperor, he gave the emperor all the power he needed to in e3, thats why if you pay attention Vader/Anakin tries to enlist Luke to not only help free him from the emperors cluches but destroy him also, listen to what Vader/Anakin tells Luke on the bridge after there fight in e5, and if it was'nt for Luke Vader would never have been redeemed and ballance would not have come about...sorry

  • @apollonas101 anakin wasnt strong enough? who picked the emperor up and killed him? o ye anakin. and luke wasnt strong enough either he was about to be killed if it wasnt for vadar.

  • @caheathy mm? oook then why dose Vader-Anakin try to rally Luke to help him overthrow the emeror in e5??? and telling Luke its his destiny to destroy the emeror because he has foreseen this???? you need to either watch the movies proporly or you've got the story mxed up....sorry

  • @caheathy mm? oook then why dose Vader-Anakin try to rally Luke to help him overthrow the emperor in e5??? and telling Luke its his destiny to destroy the emperor because he has foreseen this???? you need to either watch the movies proporly or you've got the story mxed up....sorry

  • @caheathy Anakin was'nt strong enough to destroy the emperor, he gave the emperor all the power he needed to in e3, thats why if you pay attention Vader/Anakin tries to enlist Luke to not only help free him from the emperors cluches but destroy him also, listen to what Vader/Anakin tells Luke on the bridge after there fight in e5, and if it was'nt for Luke, Vader would never have been redeemed and ballance would not have come about...sorry

  • George Lucas is an Idiot!

  • @depedro99 why?

  • @caste1200 You really can't figure that one out? I'll explain if u want.

  • Holy shit! I remember seeing this.... damn I was 7 years old when I saw this. I had no idea what Star Wars was before seeing this, but I remember that what I saw blew me away, and I started begging my mom right away to take me to see it. When I came out of the theater I kept yelling out "yee-hooo" imitating Han Solo. Wasn't so happy coming out coming out of 'Empire' though lol

  • Now you can watch starwars with crap extra bits :O....

  • magi1029384756 you misunderstand the story or theme, Anakin was the chosen one until through his free will he turned to the dark side, in this he forfitted his destiny to his son , hence the titlle of e4 ''a new hope'' and Vader even tells Luke this in e5 saying ''you can destroy the emperor, he has forseen this..it is your destiny'' Vader or Anakin may have thrown the dark lord down the reactor sharf...but infact it was Luke who initiated the crack within the sith partership

  • This was actually how I was exposed to SW when I was a little kid because for my birthday I got the Special Edition VHS box set. Ever since then Iv been a SW to my core and I remember wanting to FF through the commentary by George Lucas on the making of SW and what went into the SE, but now I enjoy watching the whole thing. I think Id like to be buried with my SW collection because my family would defintely sell it for about $100 which is, aside from insulting, a way to low of a price.

  • Luke is the one'' always was the one''

  • @apollonas101 luke is NOT the one its anakin!!! who throws the dark lord of the sith to his death?? ANAKIN not LUKE

  • @apollonas101 It's Anakin who brought the balance at the end. Just as the prophecy foretold.

  • @STJERNESPEKKET

Lucas is a bad director now, today. Didn't you see those prequels? But, once upon a time, he wasn't bad. Williams made Star Wars legendary though.

  • @LukeLovesRose Believe me there has been worse

but if Anakin wasen't so fucking EMO! THEN IT WOULD BE WAY BETTER!

  • fiquen ligados pessoal starwars 4 já esta a caminho marcado para 2011

  • @gabrilicia Está se referindo ao episódio 4, "Uma nova esperança"? Como assim já está a caminho para 2011?

  • All the Star Wars Movies will Never Get Old....

  • George Lucas is a bad director. That's all there is to it. ILM is his baby and it's what he's always dreamed of. Luckily for us he didn't have that kind of technology back then to ruin the original films. The remakes and prequels however show what happens when a special effects junkie thinks he's a director. Stick to supplemental effects for Spielberg, Lucas.

  • To think, this is going to be happening all over again, this time, all six movies will be in 3D...Thanks Avatar.

  • sorry i saidthat twice

  • wow i think you folks are too hard on the prequels. i agree ep 1 sucks with it's crap jar jar and anakin lines, but i didn't find 2 and 3 bad

  • @blumsnappers

Eps. 4 to 6 had a lot of errors, bad acting, and other issues, but those things were done by mistake meanwhile the issues with eps. 1 to 3 (specially 1) were done on porpoise.

IMHO 1 to 3 aren't actually bad movies, they just didn't fill the expectation and hype of the fans and not so fans and also feel a bit like there not part of the same saga.

  • wow, i think you folks are too hard on the prequels. i agree that ep 1 sucked with it's jar jar and crap anakin lines, but i didn't find 2 and 3 bad

  • In episode 4 obi wan talks about a great war where a lot of jedi's died, is that the war that happens in episode 2?

  • @Abdullah2009 yes

  • episodes 1 -3 were a dissappointment to real starwars fans

the tech was far too advanced, poor choice of actors with the exception of liam neeson and christopher lee, an actor like morgan freeman can play a better mace windu, mcdiarmid's palpatine is overacting and does not look like the emperor in episode 6 (more like pope benedict )

the puppet yoda is better than the cgi and jar jar is like when nips were put on batman

  • happy star wars day everyone :D

  • HAN SHOT FIRST.

  • @starwart2000 Who cares?

  • Whoa, Luigi84289. You must have had a LOT of time on your hands to post those comments. Look at them, their like the size of essays! :D

  • In the prequels loopholes plague them small and large. Even some of the dialogue makes no sense. it's all there to help support the action and special effects the true foci of the movies.

  • does there exist anywhere on the internet the original, unremastered version?

  • At the end of this clip click on the first block, it's right there

  • May The Force Unleashed be with you!!

  • i think its hilarious people think they "ruined" the OT by remastering it and adding a few cgi parts. lighten up you fossils. did it change the story at all? no. its Lucas's story, he can do what he wants with it. Its not like some other company came in and changed everything. Step out of the stone age. im suprised some of you can even use a computer.

  • @xamripvan It didn't change the story, and a lot of the shots do make it a little better looking, but it ruined a lot of the pacing of the movie. The first cuts of the movies were very well paced and pulled you in more so than the revamped versions. Enhanced effects (explosions, ships, etc.) are cool in a lot of the shots, but things like cluttering up the frame of the movie, so characters aren't viewable behind a giant dinosaur that fails to enhance the movie, are not.

  • @randomuscoremusician Exactly. It's just pointless tinkering. He can't leave his movies alone. If he wants to remaster certain shots and help the visual presentation by improving on what is already there (proper remastering) I have no problem with that but going to the extreme of changing actual in movie dialoge is too far. It might please George but not the millions of people who watch his movies. And further trying to replace the original versions with the new ones is a

  • @randomuscoremusician slap in the face to the fans. We should be able to buy whatever we demand. I don't care if George doesn't wanna sell that's what the fans want. Doesn't he care at all about the people who watch his stuff? The guy's nuts with money and power. He needs to be stopped. I was hoping he could contain his craziness to within the boundaries of the new movies but he has even gone so far as to change an entire cast member in Return of The Jedi.

  • @xamripvan Well, it did look great, but I'm afraid I'm one of those fossils. The extra cg were just window dressing; but you're right about the story--still great!

  • @xamripvan They did ruin it why do we need flash just for the point of putting more flash in it? the OT was all about the plot. George has stated that the visual effects were there solely to bring to life what was written on paper. Why the need for the Jabba scene? (which didn't make any sense as he would have had to put on 500 lbs in a 6 year span) Why the lumbering behemoth when the speeder goes through mos eisley that is there for no other reason than to just block our view?? or the big

  • @xamripvan creature picking up some scrap that does nothing more than distract us from the four main characters at that point. This kind of stuff degrades the quality of his original film. It makes the films seem less and less professional the more pointless stuff they have. Look at real masterpieces like Casablanca or Gone with the wind. We don't see pointless junk only what is needed to advance the plot correctly and help tie everything together.

  • @Luigi84289 lol i was actually respecting what you were saying until you compared star wars to casablanca and gone with the wind. after that i cant take you seriously.

  • @xamripvan But it is of the same league. It's everywhere even people that don't like Scifi movies for the most part have watch Star Wars. The movie has grossed more than almost every other film ever made. Look at the plot flow and the character development. The special effects in the original one are solely used to enhance the plot and carry it on. Not just junk meant to entertain us for a fraction of a second. The first scene tells us all we need to know. You can ignore the opening text.

  • @xamripvan It is clearly established as to what entity which later narrows down to Luke is the protagonist and which is the antagonist which gradually focuses on Vader. The two ships size give us a grasp of how large and powerful the empire is and how small and struggling the rebellion is at that point.

  • @xamripvan The worst change is Han Shooting first. This completely changes the nature of his character altering our perception of him in the other 2 movies. He's not supposed to be a good guy he's a smuggler with a common enemy by the end of the film and has developed fond feelings for Luke. Enough that he risk's his own life at the end.. He was supposed to be softened through the trilogy by Leia and the relationship not be the guy that he is at the end of Return of The Jedi in Star Wars.

  • @xamripvan i only ever saw this version...didn't ruin it for me..:P

  • @LoneSola

I think Lucas was misguided - but I appreciate him doing this in 1997.

I saw, for the first time, all three proper Star Wars films in a cinema - and despite the visual shenanigans he played, I enjoyed it nevertheless.

BUT, I would much rather have had a re-release of the original, and a chance to feel what those unsuspecting 70s kids might have felt.

I got to see a proper version of 2001 in a cinema a few years before, and grainy as it was, I treasured the experience for all time.

  • I thought III was actually really good but the first two weren't good at all. The final lightsaber duel in 3 was the greatest fight scene ever. I think the space battles were good in the first 3 but not as epic as the original trilogy.

  • star wars episodes IV V & VI > star wars abusing CGI before its even mastered and the overuse of comic relief

  • @GiantEnemyCrab63 I agree with this. I loved the new ones as a kid but I watched Episode I last night and my gf pointed out how silly it was. Just after watching empire strikes back, then return of the jedi, then the phantom menace... you notice how SHIT it is.

  • i wish they never would have made these last few in the past ten yrs, shoulda just left it alone, went and fucked it all up

  • yeah i agree. the cgi stuff looks shitty to me. really fake. although its smoother and they can do more with it , more detail etc. it looks like a complete departure from reality and less believable to me

  • I hope in another 20 years they release it at cinemas again. Starwars is truly a classic with no equal.

  • would rather watch the bad quality image of the good quality star wars on my VHS with out all that crap added in.

  • @woadancincolours I'd love to see it in the original on the silver screen. All three, on the big screen, w/out the CG BS.

  • @TheKNH86

    It wouldn't suffer at all.

I believe that, when Lucas dies - and people look back on his immense legacy to popular cinema - the clips they show will be of his phenomenal breakthrough movie in 1977. His 1997 redo (and perhaps prequels too) will be footnotes.

Of course, the 70s effects HE INVENTED, don't completely stand up today. But they were groundbreaking and changed cinema. Why is he so ashamed of that that he has to butcher his achievement with CGI?

  • At that time here in Brazil all things imported took a long time to coming out and I just watched this movie on a rented VCR tape only in 86 when I was 12 years old

now everything is simultaneously launching in the USA is also released here but I really missing the old days of childhood because it was all magical and watching SW for the first time was quite remarkable

  • I wish they would do this again in the new decade. that would be sick

  • lol when he says Special Edition I love the star wars movies!

  • i'm 35 now and this my favourite

  • oh my god i want to watch star waes now!

  • To have inserted into the 1977 movie, immediately after the planet is zapped by the Empire, a 1950's TV news desk science report of telescopic detection of a faint explosion from millions of light years away, is to clearly emphasise the concept that people watching the movie know that which Earth astronomers are, or were, unable to contemplate - and that is that there is, or was, War In The Heavens. What else could be the point of making the 1977 Star Wars movie in the first place?

  • @Richardhedditch261 lol troll or retard

  • War in the Heavens had to be qualified. An Earth telescope of the 1950s would detect traces of an explosion the size of which involved the zapping of the planet in the 1977 Star Wars. Star Wars 1977 should have harked back to a news science report from Earthg TV reporting such a telescopic detection. Wouldn't matter if it were three billion or 3oo million light years away, because it then gets TOO semantic to q

  • Troll, retard computer posted before I finished typing. I was finishing by saying, it would be semantic to debate veracity of either 3 billion or 200 million light years ago of 'Star wars' explosion being detected by Earth telescopes.

  • I think the re-releases may have had something to do with George Lucas' divorce and needing the money.

  • ah no, Lucas is such as dick adding that Jabba section!

it looks shittier than a shit on a stick!

Star Wars however is a stone cold classic without a shadow of a doubt!

  • The 1977 Star Wars needed a 1950s TV news report briefly inserted, right after the Princesses' planet is zapped by the Empire, of astronomers reporting the faint detection of a cosmic explosion from several hundred million years ago, but that 1950s technology can't discern if it were a supernova, or a meteorite desroying a distant hypothetical planet, or matter being emmitted from, or into, a black hole. And, for example, US, Soviet, and Australian astronomers all having varying theories.

  • i agree! its a good idea to pull the viewer away from the story line and insert a news report that does not add any substance to the movie

  • Well, the opening narrative of 1977 Star Wars is 'long ago; far away' jismo - so to authenticate such, it seems reasonable to have Earth astronomy, or cosmology, catch faint telescopic readings of the planet's explosion inthe 1977 film, using a 1950's science desk report on the TV news; it takes a couple of minutes, then briefly shows Australia's latest Sydney Rugby League results [as the science desk report finishes], and then it cuts back to Princess Leia berating Chistopher Lee, etc.

  • nope, not gonna work.

because the premise was galaxy far, far away.

ie, not in MIlkyway, or Andromeda or triangulum galaxy, but something much further awy.

even super nova explotion on another galaxy is difficult to detect.

exploding earth sized planet on far away galaxy would be next to nothing, seen

    from earth that is.

just can not detect with technology available in 1970's.

  • @simhopp Yeah - there's all that. And I'm not so totally full of the idea myself, although I'm still 'for it'. At least you read my idea, and, also, more exactly, are fully cognizant of my concept - you, and the earlier respondent to my idea, are both able to properly understand the context of what I posited, and that's the essential thing. I never expected stuff like "Wow - yes - I agree", etc. What I didn't want, but expected, was people completely mis-construing what I actually did suggest.

  • This movie is almost - but not quite - as entertaining as a long row on Stormfront's opposing views section. :)

  • i remember buying the 1997 versions on laserdisc and i still got the boxset

  • i remember seeing this preview only about a couple of weeks after I first saw it....I could not wait to see it in theatres. All thanks to my father!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I know I saw Empire Strikes Back in theaters at one point--I guess this was it. Cool.

  • Yeah the Indiana Jones guy was defiantly a better Luke Sky-walker then Harrison Ford in the new ones.

  • just one thing to say: "wuff"

  • One thing I love nostalgia is Blu-rays that restores classic films. I think Lucas needs to work on them with new BD excluvies, 2 version of each film (the original trilogy) and have DTS-HD Master Audio. If they got that box set out, I'll buy it, no questions asked.

  • @barulez I definitely agree.

  • Awesemo 2000, I cant wait for the virtual reality edition. Keep updating it ,I love it more every time!!!

  • Eps 1-3 have too much politics

  • you got that right

  • probly thats why they started with part 4 and then just decided later on to continue the star wars movies so they went back to 1-3

  • @kristallize Eps 1-3 doesn't have a "Han Solo" character :/

  • @JamesFordchile Umm he wouldn't be born at that time. ep 3 takes place 30 years before the ep 4.

  • @kristallize And Jar Jar

  • I love the special edition it rocks

  • After AutoLevels filter Special Edition looks much better, I mean, brighter.

  • ehm...in my heart IV-V-VI only

  • Star wars forever in my heart

  • @jolyr73 and forever in mine 2

  • ur kdding right???

    it's classic.

  • I remeber seeing the re-release in theaters

  • great film.....Hail Star Wars
