I completely understand the placement for the size dowel you chose, what I don't get is why not simply choose a sturdier dowel. I like how the electrical tape looks, very clean lines and smooth and everything, but for the safety purpose you use it for, I wouldn't even want to possibly risk a dowel breaking in use. Again, love the videos, just not so much on this one.
@lenalandmine No worries, I really do appreciate the feedback. Your method would probably be safer\sturdier overall; but that's one of the interesting things that I've found -no matter how common or oft-used something seems, there will always be a better way to do it. ^_^ I've known a number of people who've used the sort that I describe here for at least a few years with no problem; which is why I posted, but something thicker is almost always stronger.
To clarify, the placement I have of my eyebolts is the exact location where you claim to be the wrong spot. However, if you do it right, with the correct diameter dowel, there won't be a single problem. Drilling through is fine, but I prefer to not scratch up subs' bare feet with the end of the screw sticking out. Not fun.
Again, I do enjoy your videos, but do keep in mind there is more than one way to do any one thing correctly.
Keep in mind how-to videos can't cover every possible change or modification. I can make similar statements about the cooking network if I change recipe ingredients. This info works well based on the parts listed. There'll always be different ways to make bondage gear.
Based on the size of dowel originally stated I stand by my placement; putting an eyebolt on the end of a small dowel is likely to splinter the wood in that direction and come loose.
I really enjoyed your other videos, but this one simply has a few points wrong. Firstly, I've been making wooden dowel-rod spreader bars for quite some time now and even with the fiercest, strongest movements of the sub, never has one as much as cracked. No snapping in half, no eyebolts coming loose, nothing. Dowel: bigger is better. 1" diameter *minimum*. The eyebolts should also be much longer than the ones you used. Drill first, set eyebolts with glue of choice, voila. Never had a problem.
When you say the diameter of a broom handle what sort of size is that in either inches or cm. Since it seems if I want something substantial it needs to be ordered in so I naturally want to get the least expensive.
If you can find it for cheap enough, using rattan would be better than the wooden dowels. It doesn't splinter if it breaks the way wood does so its much safer to use.
@Kmw500 Hmm... I don't think I've ever looked for rattan that size. But in all honesty, with the thickness of a broom handle(which is what I suggest using), no one is going to splinter it with just the pressure from the legs on the sides, it typically happens when people make the mistake of putting pressure in the middle. Some dominants will step on the middle of it to keep a sub from moving, which is effective, but can definitely lead to splintering over time.
Don't have my sources at hand but I get it originally for sca combat weapons, its about an inch diameter. Also a layer of the fiberglass packing tape, the kind that looks like it has strings in it could be put under the electrical tape to make either dowels or rattan almost impossible to splinter. We do it for the weapons and they get hit on other weapons and armor full force so there has to be something to the process. Same thing the spiral wrap method.
My primary bar uses 4 smalleye screws. I've got a couple others that are different for certain things. If you want to use this for the wrists with a collar as mentioned, you may want longer screws that go all the way through the bar and have nuts to hold them in place, since the hands can create a strong downward motion... I've heard tell of a submissive accidentally yanking the screw out with his hands, though I don't know if there's any real truth to it.
yay, a new video! Did you use 4 small eye screw eyes? I have yet to go to the store to purchase the items so i have never seen one and I'm not sure what they look like. awesome idea, awesome video, thank you :)
Do you think the drill on a Dremel tool would work for drilling the holes?
