Yup, my mom smoked these damn things, too. She buy 'em by the carton, and we'd steal a box and puff in the garage, till we got busted. Hate commercial TV. She quit, though, years ago, and still kicking at 85. Notice how it looks like her dress is pulled up at 20sec - 22sec. Subliminal suggestion, how evil those guys were.
I agree. I watch these cigarette commercials becaue they take me back to my childhood and they're frakking fun to watch. So lighten up. (Pun not intended).
Nothing like springtime air laced with burning carcinogens. Ahhh. I do enjoy the commercials by the way -- they take me back to my boyhood. They also take me back to the silly days when I actually used to smoke. So those who are so bothered by my comments should just enjoy the commercials. But I will comment on the dangers of smoking -- why shouldn't I? They are totally appropriate comments for old commercials that sell cigarettes.
News flash for you people attempting to make clever comments to enlighten us regarding the health risks of cigarette smoking: WE FRIGGIN KNOW! The commercials are a part of our history and they are fun to watch. Think of something else to say.
Springtime, ah, it happens every year around this time. Cancer, ah, it happens more and more with every cigarette you smoke. Cancer, it happens with every Salem! Cancer, it will kill you in no time!
@chrisman737 Don't blame cigarettes entirely for cancer. There are other things in the air that are bad, like sewage treatment trucks, open sewers, poultry waste, factory smog and other cancer causing agents like ipods, blueberries (no pun intended!), bluetooth devices, the list goes on and on! Don't be stupid and let these fucking government pigs dictate in your rights. They are the ones that brainwashed people about cigarettes!
Salems rock! Lets have the freedom to have Ciggarettes comercials back on pay tv , It would boster the advertising industry. I f we can worship beer commercials during the superbowl,we can have cig. comercials on pay cable tv!
We need to let people smoke in offices again! Enough of this bull shit government propaganda against smoking. Find yourselves another cash cow and stop depriving people of their rights, and don't be such fucking hypocrites pretending like you really care about people's health! There are more dangerous things that can cause lung cancer and blaming cigarettes is anti-American! So light up people, it's Springtime again! Dig THAT to your stinkin graves! Peace out...
News flash: We know that cigarette smoking is bad for people's health. It is fun to simply go back and see some of the advertising, etc. of another time period.
@doctortabby What was good back then is as hell good enough right now!! Times don't change...people change the times for their own stinkin pleasure...
The cigarette companies were aware in the early 1970's that African Americans were the primary consumers of their Salem and Kool brands, yet mainstream media was very conservative in it's portrayal of blacks, hence the use of a black voice-over for blacks to identify with without the visual depiction that would have been displeasing to honkies (whites). It's very simple.
@blabblab1212 Ok so what are we now fucking detectives? Come on, let's stop reading between the lines and watch the fucking commercial without comment!!
I miss being able to smoke in the office man! What's next? Will we be free to take a leak? Be careful of capitalist communism that still reeks Clintonomics...
I know smokings bad for you and I can see why people don't cigarette advertising on tv. But whatever happened to free market? Smoking is not obscene, its not pornography, so why no advertisements? Company's that manufacture alcoholic products are still allowed to have advertisements on tv and alcohol kills just as many people as cigarettes.
Yes, and now we have all of this sacreligious, overtly sexual and otherwise obsene crap allowed on tv all of the time, while we government officials worried about possibly showing someone smoking a cigarette (other than in an anti tobacco advertisement) on television. Gee, we sure have come a long way in 50 years haven't we (sarcasm intended)!
It was the TOBACCO COMPANIES that lobbied for the ban on cigartette ads on TV. In the late 60's, the FCC required TV stations to air anti-smoking PSA's which were way more effective than the tobacco ads. So the tobacco execs' all got together and decided they could save millions in ineffective advertiseing by lobbying for a ban. I know it sounds crazy, but it is the truth! Research it. Tobacco exec's are very clever and very immoral.
you have to understand, there are elements out there who will somehow make a racial incident out of everything even if they have to make it up and our policially correct world allows it. amazing isnt it.
@macgregor1975 Well Salem has menthol so it makes it taste country fresh, I smoke a Salem longs whenever I can, although my favorite brand is Marlboro. you dig?! then again, I AM That70sMan!
Yeah I agree, I have no idea how this ad is pushing smoking toward black people since the actors in the commercial are a garden-variety white couple. We're all some color, but I don't think this commercial even focuses on race.
Keep on smoking them, buddy! You'll end up just like my mother, who smoked Salem cigarettes for years. She died a horrible death at a young age. Wait & see how cool smoking is when you have to struggle just to breathe!
Hey man, life is about livin it up and dying young! I wanna be like the greats who died young, and by the way, what is the point about living this miserable earthly life with all the fucking problems we are facing today? Nothing like the good old 1970s! You dig that to your grave buddy!
You brought up a good point, but it is foolish to smoke. We only pass this way once, so why be a slave to nicotine? It makes no sense to me. I guess I was just too smart to let myself fall into the traps that the tobacco companies set for unfortunate & naive people who became victims of lung cancer, Emphysema & all of the other tobacco related diseases. Such a waste. Maybe you will see the light one day before it's too late. Best of luck to you, fella. You'll need it, I'm afraid.
@Chris242tt The 70s were fun to look back on. (Time heals wounds) But we had problems back then, too, Inflation was a lot higher. The draft & Vietnam loomed over our heads. Young men were being shipped off to Vietnam to fight a war under the leadership of incompetant Washington bureaucrats who were more than willing to sacrifice our young men to appease their lobbyists. Student unrest was practically at a fever pitch over the war, racial discrimination & other social problems.
I'm sorry to hear about your mother. This guy was an actor, so just like most actors, he'll advertise anything for money regardless of whether or not he uses it or likes it. He may not have even smoked.
@Thegrinch17 The same thing happened to my aunt. She smoked Salems too she died at 48 and left a six year old grandaughter and a daughter, my cousin who just graduated high school, she died one week later June 13,1986.
Cigarette ads were banned in the US in 1972. I did a lot of research on the topic for a thesis when I was in college, and what you may not realize is that the TOBACCO COMPANIES are the ones that lobbied for the ban on the ads. Why? Because at the time, Fed. law required a certain number of non-smoking PSA's be aired by stations. These ads were FAR MORE effective than the tobacco ads, and so the tobacco companies realized they could save millions in ineffective advertising dolars!
This takes me back to the 70's with the music, and so I kind of like it. But it is still a death stick. Watch out, "Springtime" -- appreciate it because if you smoke, it could be your last springtime before you cough yourself to death!
I quit smoking cigarettes many years ago, strictly to avoid the health consequences. I would have to disagree with you comment however. I loved Salem (at least the blend of the early eighties before I went to non menthol (for health reasons...haha) and if cigarettes weren't so friggin' bad for you I would smoke the Salem and Marlboro blends that I smoked back in the day all fo the friggin' time!!!
So is alcoholism and prescription drug addiction but those are still socially acceptable. Come to think of it, Ill have a Lunesta washed down with some Crown Royal. LOL! Ive smoked three quarters of my life and let me tell you, if people dont kill themselves one way, they will do it another. We cant save everybody.
That's true, actually. I'm an ex-smoker, but I realize that cigarettes and alcohol are crucial to the economy, so we can't get rid of them. Ever. Remember Prohibition, and how well that worked?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I smoked for 16 years and quit in March of 2006. Watching these commercials is making me so glad I quit smoking. To the people who say these commercials make them want to smoke, are you insane? These people look like total asses smoking and that's what you'll look like if you smoke. Current smokers, for real, quit. Once you've been off them about 1 month you'll see how dorky and disgusting smoking looks. You'll also finally be able to smell what smokers really smell like. It's not good.
It's all retrospect.. Yes, these ads look frightening now. I remember then and ads for other unhealthy things from those days. Some ads were outright lies. (Listerine kills germs that cause bad breath.) I too am off the cigs. 4 yrs clean after almost 20 yrs of Marlboro red. What a relief! Nicotine addiction is a nightmare!
You are right on target Hobisibo...man I know of so many people that died of smoking...when you see people smoking now they have to be out of their minds.
Hobisibo, I find it interesting that people here "negative 6'd" you! Unfortunately I think most users of YouTube are kids and it shows the attitude of our future generation.
Right on, Hobisibo. I should add that it helps to have a reason to quit. I started a daily exercise program, and quit smoking very quickly after that. Now seventeen years have passed, I still don't smoke, but I do exercise.
Also, smoking still seemed cool back then, so these commercials DID make people want to smoke.
To sum up:
1) Start an exercise program.
2) Quit cold turkey.
3) Climb the walls for about a week, and stay away from your smoker friends.
They outlawed advertising cigarettes on TV because these commercials did encourgae people to smoke , but does anyone see whats going on now. Every time I see a commercial break all I see is McDonalds , Burger King , Taco bell , Wendys , Dairy Queen , Arbys ect..... Now we have commercials that make people want to eat which is starting to tear up the country with overweight people, especially our children which is posing another risk to health. maybe they should stop advertising food on TV
Then what's next? Let them come to your house and pull that donut from your mouth, arrest you? Were starting down that lane with smoking in some areas, comming to your house. If we are stupid, then we are stupid, but leave us or freedoms!
no they should'nt! if you have a car wreck and wind up in a wheelchair, should ford motor pay your bills for the rest of your life? hell no! we all know the risks when we get in a car,and you know the risks when you light up-and anybody who says they did'nt know is a liar.
well, by now it's common knowledge that smoking is bad for you. Every single pack of cigarettes has a warning on it saying (I"m paraphrasing) "smoking will give you a bunch of diseases, please don't smoke." Some packs even come with inserts encouraging people to STOP smoking! If all of that hasn't stopped someone from using this product, then I don't see what more could be done or why the tobacco companies are at blame.
i agree. people know what they are getting themselves into. we have warnings, we have doctors all on tv, radio etc speaking of the cancers and other diseases caused by this horror and the schools ram it down throats. so if you start, hey, its on your own shoulders, dont blame anyone. i do think that if the govt wanted to they could just ban it but they dont want to love the tax revenue. govt are pure phonies.
Yeah that's what I was going to say....in 1971, House of Congress in Washington, D.C. has ordered to ban all the cigarette commercials from television because that would distract our children and teens.
That my dear skeptic was the beginning of the conspiracy by this present government to strip us of our liberties. That is Anti-American! It is a Communist system in disguise and we as a people need to get up and fight or get killed! We need to get that fighting spirit of the late 60s and 70s back into our lives! See you on the flipside man!
What's wrong with Communism? If you say that it's because of the death of innocent people, it was never meant to be that way. It was egotistical and greedy leaders like Stalin who ruined it for the rest of us and gave it a diabolical impression on the rest of the world. That was simply my point of view and wanted to share it with you. No insult or offense intended at all.
Our capitalism is becoming a Communism, yeah man! If we are truly capitalist, our government would stop banning cigarette commercials, even smoking in public places, and remember, this great nation of our was founded BY somkers! You all dig THAT to your graves!
Aw, yes, springtime, a time for a puff of death! -:) Hate to think what next winter will be like. Yeah, like the first thing that comes to my mind in spring is smoking cigs, NOT!
being a recent smoke free person I quin in January after smoking for 16 years. I wanted one so bad when that man took a puff. But I can say thankfully that I will not smoke again as long as I live

You all dig THAT to your graves!

being a recent smoke free person I quin in January after smoking for 16 years. I wanted one so bad when that man took a puff. But I can say thankfully that I will not smoke again as long as I live
