Most cop dramas are superficial, predictable, faux Hollywood garbage. You are always aware that they are TV shows. NYPD Blue put you -- front and center -- at the crime scenes, police station, streets, and everywhere else it artistically weaved its intricate web of believability. The line between reality and fiction was SO artfully blurred that it confused our subconsciouses into believing the unreal. That was the brilliance of NYPD Blue! The directing/writing/acting mesmerized and legitimized.
@bshaun2 it's called character development my friend, any great show, particularly with a character as tragically flawed as sipowicz, has it, it's challenging and you can bet dennis loved it
@bshaun2 that was the most amazing and beautiful thing about Sipowicz. The more he went through, the more pain and suffering they heaped on him, the more human he became. He was, and will remain, my favorite tv character of all time. He's the poster child for remembering that hero's are often made through experience.

MIKE POST says more by noodling around on his synth in the last 10 seconds than the entire POP version of Yusuf Islams song.

That final scene still makes me cry.

Nice song, but why do people insist on ruining the dialogue in a ggod clip by playing music?

That's "Father & Son", originally done by Cat Stevens.
Any man with a son can relate to that song.

@Sako62
Actually this version is really from ronan keating with Yusuf (last name unknown by me). you can hear it if you listen to his voices.
The origanal version is in deed Cat stevens.
But it doesn't matter who sings it. It keeps being a good song
