the old greats could put a smile on your face even if the skit wasn't much.. they had charm. the humor had meaning..made you feel good. today' they don't even know what the word skit means and there is no vibe with the audience...phony laughs for phony comedy to outrage and offend and challenge. guess lenny bruce would be happy. thing about him was i never laughed at one of his jokes? did he have any? played carnegie hall. hmm, think that's we're we went wrong.
@ Danazawa: Actually he wasn't. He was conservative, no doubt. But he and several other celebrities petitioned for gun control in the 60s after the Kennedy assassinations. I mean he and Fonda, who was VERY liberal, were close friends. He was definitely right-leaning politically, but not a nut. All (reputable) accounts say he was a very kind person. I'm about as liberal as they come, but I love J.S. And this is great. :)
Just comfort yourself with knowing it was the time... like how we justify our grandparents being racist. It was just the time he was from. :P [and no, racism is never okay :]
Legends, words fail to describe how much these people mean to this word, they live on through us still, because there are still people in the world who can appreciate such talent, never shall such men be forgotten.
Please...if anyone is watching this that works for British TV.....please consider putting shows on like this.ABSOLUTELY amazing.I havent ever seen this and these two GENTLEMEN are the like we will NEVER see again.
It's said Dean never rehearsed, so his expressions of amazement and surprise at Stewart's silliness are priceless..priceless. What a wonderful pair of professionals.
I want to smoke a cigarette too!

I have loved Jimmy Stewart all my life - but I just found out he was a right-wing, Republican nut - he was friends with J. Edgar Hoover.
